Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ENDS WV. SIMoNs, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Payson, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tub Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an attachment for ordinary wash tubs which is in the form of a tub seat, whereby such a tub may be used for bathing purposes.

The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this character which may be attached to or detached from a wash tub quickly and conveniently, which is adapted to form a rigid seat for the bather and to empty any water that may collect thereon into the tub so as not to cause soiling or unnecessary dampening of the surrounding floor or other supporting surface, and which is provided further with holding devices for soap and towels or other toilet articles.

A further object is the provision of a tub attachment of this character which is constructed of the simplest and fewest number of parts and includes a sheet metal body adapted to have one edge attached to the tub, a foldable supporting member for the outer edge of the body, and foldable towelsupporting arms, which construction permits of the collapsing of the device when it is not desired for active use, whereby it will be rendered compact and adapted to occupy a small amount of space so that it may be stored away conveniently.

The invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the device which is constructed preferably of some suitable sheet metal, such as galvanized iron. This body is provided with a concave edge 2 which is adapted to be attached to the upper edge 3 of an ordistruck to a slight extent so as to provide a.

A yoke-shaped supporting member 8 which is bent from a single piece of heavy wire, has its terminal portions bent laterally as at 9 and pivotally connected to the outer edge 5 of the body 1 by means of the hinge members 10. The cross portion 11 of the said supporting member is adapted to rest upon the floor or other supporting surface when the supporting member is in its depending position. This cross portion is provided medially with an upwardly bent offset portion 12 to which one end of a brace rod 13 is pivotally connected, this rod having its free end bent laterally to provide a securing extension 14 which is adapted for engagement within a tubiform bracket 15, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the under face of the seat body 1 medially with Patented Mar. 16, 1915.

The hinge members 10 are riveted or secured in any other suitable manner to the outer edge of the body 1 in such positions that the supporting member and brace rod may be folded inwardly against the concave face of the said body, when the extension 14 of the brace rod is detached from the bracket 15.

The outer convex edge of the seat body is bent into the form of a bead 16 which incloses a curved reinforcing wire 17. This wire is constructed preferably of resilient metal and has its ends projecting outwardly from the bead so that they may be bent in conjunction with the adjacent ends of a second reinforcing wire 18 of similar material and construction, which is embedded within the bead formed upon the inner edge of the body, to form attaching clips 19 which may be engaged with the upper edge of the tub so that the concave inner edge of the seat body will overlie the said edge of the tub.

A towel-supporting arm 20 which is constructed substantially yoke-shaped of heavy galvanized wire or the like, has its terminals bent laterally to provide pivot extensions 21, which are pivotally mounted within the hinge members 22 which are attached to the under face of the body 1 at the side edges thereof, in any suitable manner, so that each arm may be swung inwardly into inoperative position in engagement with the concave face of the body. Limiting arms 23 are formed on the outer ends of the pivot extensions 21 of each towel-supporting arm and are disposed in a plane at an obtuse angle to the plane of the side portions of the arm. These limiting arms are adapted to engage the under face of the body 1 when the corresponding towel-supporting arm is swung outwardly from the body, in order to support the said arm at an angle of approximately t5 degrees to the vertical. The cross portion 2a of each towel-supporting arm is bowed inwardly to such an extent that it will serve as a secure support for a towel or the like.

A centrally disposed handle 25 is provided upon the outer edge of the seat body to afford means by which the attachment as a whole may be suspended from a suppor ing nail or hook when the device is not in use. Preparatory to hanging the device upon a hook, or storing the same away in any convenient place, the towel-supporting arms 20, the supporting member 8, and the brace rod 13 are swung inwardly into collapsed position in order that the device will occupy a small amount of space. lit should be apparent that this attachment for ordinary wash tubs should prove to be a valuable household article which is so simple in construction that it will be very inexpensive and easy to apply in operative position upon a tub or to detach therefrom when not desired for use. It may also be used without danger of wasting water or soap and will maintain the soap and towels or other toilet articles in convenient positions.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. The combination with a wash tub, of a seat attachment therefor comprising a dished body having its concave surface disposed uppermost, one edge of the body being adapted to be connected with the upper edge of the tub, a substantially U-shaped supporting member formed from a single strip of material and having the ends of its side portions pivotally connected to the upper edge of the body outwardly with respect to the tub-engaging edge, the said supporting member being adapted to depend in operative supporting position and to be folded in inoperative position within the body, and a bracing member pivotally connected at one end with the outer cross portion of the supporting member and being adapted to have its opposite end connected detachably with the under face of the body in operative bracing position wherein it is disposed at an angle to the plane of the supporting memher, the said bracing member being adapted to be moved into the plane of the supporting member when inoperativeJ 2. The combination with a wash tub, of a seat attachment therefor comprising a dished body having its concave surface disposed uppermost, one edge of the body being adapted to be connected with the upper edge of the tub, a substantially U-shaped supporting member formed from a single strip of material and having the ends of its side portions pivotally connected to the upper edge of the body outwardly with respect to the tub-engaging edge, the said supporting member being adapted to depend in operative supporting position and to be folded in inoperative position within the body, a bracing member pivotally connected at one end with the outer cross portion of the supporting member and being adapted to have its opposite end connected detachably with the under face of the body in operative bracing position wherein it is disposed at an angle to the plane of the supporting member, the said bracing member being adapted to be moved into the plane of the supporting member when inoperative, the cross portion of the supporting member being offset inwardly at its point of connection with the bracing member to provide a semi-annular loop arranged in the plane of the supporting member, a pivoting eye provided upon the bracing member in sliding and rotary engagement with the loop, lateral extension provided upon the free end of the bracing member, and a tubiform bracket mounted upon the end face of the seat with its opening extending laterally and adapted to receive the lateral extension of the bracing member.
