Be it known that I, THOMAS REDMAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Green Royd, Arnside, in the county of Westmoreland, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in and Relating to Shuttles for Weaving, of which the following is a a specification.
This invention relates to that class of shuttles such as are commonly used for weaving ordinary cotton and like fabrics; and the object is to construct and combine the several parts of the shuttle tongue, so that the two ends of the shuttle are more evenly balanced than is the case when the shuttle tongue and adjacent parts are constructed solid in the manner as hitherto; also to be enabled to adjust the elevation of the point or free end of the shuttle tongue in relation to the base of shuttle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. represents one end of an ordinary shuttle to which my invention is added, Fig. 2 is a transverse section through line a. b. Fig. 3 is, an enlarged view of a metal plate stamping such as may be used for blocking into a hollow box base of a shuttle tongue. The remainder of the figures are also drawn to a larger scale, Fig. 4: re resenting a side elevation of a tube to whic the box base of shuttle tongue is secured. Fig. 5. is a plan of same showing by dotted lines the engagement of the projecting or skewer por tion of shuttle tongue. Fig. 6 shows the side and end views of a split tubular bearing bar adapted to engage with the underside of the hollow box base. Fig. 7. is an elevation of a split tubular bar adapted to act as a pivot upon which the hollow box base may be supported. Fig. 8. is a section of said tubular bar, and Fig. 9. a view of the hollow box base partly in section.
In carrying out my invention, I form a square sectioned hollow box base of shuttle tongue, from a metal plate stamping, such as shown by Fig. 3. hereinafter more particularly described. The piece of plate indicated by the numeral 2. is out along the dotted line A, into contact with the adjacent portion of plate, see Fig. 9. When the plate stamping is pressed in the ordinary manner by suitable dies, it is bent to the contour of said dies. To this operation no claim is made as forming part of this invention. The side portions 2 of the metal plate stamping, and the end portions indicated by E and F, when the plate is blocked, are bent intoa vertical position along the dotted lines 2 also along the full lines 3 the portions 2 of the plate when blocked, forming the vertical sides of the hollow box base. See Fig. 2. The'end portions of the stamping indicated by E and F. are out along the full lines C. B, and said pieces along with the center piece C, are perforated at H, J, and K, the center portion C, being bent into a vertical position along the dotted lines C, E and F. The pieces E and F are as before stated bent into a vertical position along with the side portions 2". Each piece E and F is respectively bent along the dotted lines E and F, in order to strengthen the front end of hollow box base, which is then composed of three thicknesses of plate, G, E, and F, temporarily held together in the desired position by the engagement of the clips G of ordinary construction bent over the front by which the plates are held together. See Fig. 9. When the blocking of hollow box base 3 is formed up, and temporarily held together by the clips G, the top and rear end of said base are open. This opening is covered by a plate P. the said plate overlapping the front end of box base by the turned down piece G. See Fig. 9.
The perforations 5. through the side portions 2 are opposite each other when blocked, and through these perforations is passed a tube 6, the said tube also passing through and engaging with a tube 6 which may be flanged at 7 or otherwise, the tube 6 being of such length as to engage with the inner vertical surfaces of the side plates 2*, the ends of the tube 6 terminating by preference flush with the outer vertical surfaces of 2 The tube 6 has an extension 6 projecting at right angles thereto, as

- What I claim is I 1. The combination with a shuttle casing and shuttle tongue, of means for mounting said tongue in said casing, comprising a hollow box, supporting means within said box adapted to engage the end of said shuttle tongue, a member passing through said supporting means and having its ends engaging the shuttle casing to provide a pivotal support for the shuttle tongue, substantially as described. r

A loom'shutt'le comprising in combination a shuttle casing-having a recess'formed therein, a shuttle tongueprovided with a hollow skewer, a hollow box -pivota lly mounted within said recess-, supporting meanswithin said box adapted to-engage the hollow skewer of the shuttle -tongue and adjusting means located beneath the forward-end of the hollow box for adjusting the position of the shuttlet'ongue' in relation to the base of the shuttlecasi-ng.

A loom shuttle comprisingincombination a shuttle casing; having a recess formed therein, a shuttle tongue provided with a hollowskewer, a hollow box pivotally mounted. within said recess, supporting means within said box adapted to -eng'age the hollow skewer of. the shuttle, tongue, adjusting means located beneath the forward end of, the hollow box for adjusting the position of-the shuttle tongue in relation to the base of the shuttle casing, and spring means within said recess adapted to bear against the hollow box, substantially as described.
