To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD L. FLEE- HEARTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Matagorda and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of

which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to plows.

When the soil is clay and sticky the progress of a plow is seriously impeded, owing to the fact that the soil will adhere to the share and the mold board, thereby causing very great frictional resistance. This will occur no matter how brightly the share and mold board may have been polished, and for this reason soil which is known to be rich and productive has oftentimes been found extremely hard to till, owing to the excessive power that is required to pull the plow. It has been found that when the surface of the mold board can be coated with plaster of Paris or similar plastic material, the, soil,'no matter how sticky, will slide freely over the surface and be easily shed by the plow without causing the necessity of unusual resistance.

With these facts inmind, the present invention has for its object to produce a simple and e'liicient plow attachment, where by a surface coating of plastic material may be applied and retained in position on the mold board.

A further object of the invention is to produce a frame of simple construction which may be readily applied to an ordinary mold board for the purpose of retaining in position a surface coating of plastic mate rial, said frame being readily detachable when it shall not be found necessary to employ said surface coating.

With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the-invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of theclaims may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawing,--Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow the mold board of which is equipped with theimproved frame or attachment before the application of the plastic material. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the frame detached. Fig. 3 is a side view showing a mold board equipped with the improved attachment, the plastic filling having been applied. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken'on the line 4l-i in Fig. 3.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

5 designates a frame which consists of an open or approximately U-shaped hoop or band which is bent to the contour of the upper portion of a mold board 6 of an ordinary turning plow, or to the contour of the upper portion of any plow blade to which it is desired to apply the invention. Said frame is preferably constructed of resilient metal that will hold the shape into which it is formed, and the hoop or frame is provided at its lower edge with inwardly extending lugs or projections 7 These projections when the hoop or frame is applied to the circumference of the mold board 6 will lie adjacent to the rear face of the latter, and will serve to retain the hoop or frame in position with its lower edge supported on the upper face of the mold board. The hoop or frame being made of resilient material, may be readily sprung into plaEe.

Secured upon the plow share B by fastening members, such as bolts 9, is a thin blade 10, the upper portion of which is spaced from the upper face of the mold board, as will be best seen by reference to Fig. 5. This blade will cooperate with the frame 5 to maintain the plastic coating, as will be presently described.

After the frame and the blade 10 have been applied in the manner set forth, the mold'board is provided with a surface coating of plastic material, such as plaster of Paris, the same being indicated'at 8. During the application of the plastic material, the hoop or frame and the blade 10 serve to retain it and to prevent it from overflowing the edges of the mold board and the share. After the plastic material hardens the hoop or frame and the blade 10 serve to retain it in position and to prevent it from becoming accidentally detached. It is obvious that the face of the plastic material may be finished in any convenient and desirable manner.

A mold board equipped with the improved attachment and with the plastic coating or covering retained thereby will shed the soil freely, nomatter how sticky and adhesive it may be. It is obvious that the frame or hoop may be made of various hoop being provided at intervals with retaining hooks extending beneath the mold board.

2. The combination with a mold board and share, of retaining means for plastic material connected therewith and comprising an approximately U-shaped open hoop of resilient material curved to the contour of the mold board and provided at intervals with retaining hooks extending beneath the mold board, and a thin flat blade secured on the share and extending upwardly in the direction of and spaced from the mold board and overlapping the plastic material thus cooperating with the hoop to retain a plastic filling on the face of the mold board.
