iniaasia,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Enno J. TANGEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Keystone, in the county of Benton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Carpet-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in carpet cleaners.
The present'invention is an improvement upon the carpet cleaner shown, described, and claimed in the patent issued to me, @ctober 22, 1912, #1,0&2,05l.
The present inventionhas for its object to provide in connection with a carpet cleaner of the type shown, described and ,claimed in the above-mentioned patent, ,a suction device interposed between the beaters and the napmestoring brush of the cleaner whereby to efiectually remove any dust remaining in the carpet after the latter has been acted upon by the heaters.
The invention has for its further object to provide a carpet cleaner of the type shown in said patent, with a suction device so arranged that the same may be cut out of operation and the cleaner operated without the suction device if desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide in a carpet cleaner of this type, a
suction device so arranged that a portion or carpets of various widths passing through the cleaning machine.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts.
as will be hereinafter more fully described and then particularly claimed, and in describing the invention in detail, reference will be. had to' the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of my invention as it has been practised by me, like numerals of reference indicating like parts throughout the different views in which Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional view of a carpet cleaner in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional Specification of Letters Patent. I

ing
tion,
In Patent #1,04,-2,054c above referred to, there is shown a suitable-supporting frame such as is designated 5 in the present applione of the shut-ofis and guides in sec- Patented Feb, 23, 1915.
Application filed August 4, 1913. Serial No. 782,833.
cation. There is shown a carrying roll such as 6 in the present application upon which the carpet as 7 is placed and from which it unwinds as' it passes through the machine. There is shown a heater shaft as 8 in the present application which carries a plurality of tappets for actuating heaters as 9 in the present application which strike upon the carpet to dislodge the dust therefrom, the
dust or other foreign matter filtering through a screen as 10 into a dust-collecting receptacle as 11 from where it is removed by a suitable suction device as12. The de vice of saidpatent' also embodies a receiving roll as 14 in the present case, and a naprestoring brush as 15 in the present case. The heater shaft in the device shown in the patent above referred to is suitably driven,
and the nap-restoring brush is driven in unison therewith by a belt or other suitable form of gearing.
In the present invention, I employ in connection with the elements above noted, and which comprise a complete carpet cleaning machine, a suction device over which the carpet is passed after it leaves the heaters and before it reaches the nap-restoring brush, which acts to extract any dust that may remain in the carpet after the same passes the heaters.
The said suction device comprises a. suction pipe 16 which extends throughout the length of the machine, and is disposed between the beaters 9 and the nap-restoring brush 15, so that the carpet 7 must pass thereover as it is unwound from the roll'6 and wound upon the roll 14. This suction pipe 16 is closed at its ends in any suitable manner as by plugs 17, and is provided on its upper face with a length-wise extending slot 18 which of course terminates short of the extreme ends of the pipe 16. Connected with said suction pipe, preferably at the lower side thereof, are a series of upright pipes 19, which at their lower ends oinwith a receiving pipe 20, and in each of which pipes 19 there is located a shut-0E valve 21. The pipe 20 is closed at its ends, and has communicating therewith, at any .desired point, but preferably at or about mid-way;
thereof, a take-0d pipe 22, which has connection at its other end with pump cylinders- 23. Said pump cylinders 23 have discharge pipes 24 leading into a common discharge 25. These cylinders 23 are suitably-mounted at one end of the machine, toward the forward side thereof, and the pistons (not shown) of said cylinders have their rods 26 pivotally-comiected as at 26 to an arm 27 which is pivotally-mounted as at 27 on a bracket 28 carried by the frame 5 of the carpet beater. A link 29 is connected at one end with a crank 30 at the end of the beater shaft 8 and at its other end to the arm 27 as at 29 so that as said beater shaft 8 is rotated, the oscillation imparted to the arm 27 will reciprocate the piston rods 26 and create a suction in the cylinders 23.
in order that the suction device may be cut out of operation and the beater alone operated to clean the carpet, 1 preferably provide a clutch 31 on the beater shaft which may be thrown into or out of engagement in any desirable manner as by the lever 32.
As in my prior patent above referred to, the beater shaft 8 carries a pulley wheel 33 over which passes a belt 34, which engages a ulley on the shaft of the nap-restoring rush 15, so that the latter will be driven as the beater shaft is driven. The beater shaft has a drive pulley 35 over which passes the drive belt 36, it being preferable to provide a tightening pulley 37 herein shown as adjustably mounted on a standard 38 which also carries the idler 39.
In order to adjust the length of the slot 18 to the width of the carpet being passed over the suction pipe 16, 1 provide in the latter a pair of slide cut-offs 40 suitably packed as shown in Fig. so as to prevent air passing between them and the inner wall of the pipe, and which have projections 41 extending through the slot 18 of the pipe 16. These slide cut-offs act as guides for the edges of the carpet, and may be adjusted as shown in Fig. 2 so as to out 0d the ends of the slot 18, the pipes 19 which communicate with such cut-off ends of the pipe 16 being cut out by means of closing the valves 21.
In practice it will be understood that the cylinders 23, or the pipes 22, 24, or both, are provided with suitable intake and exit valves so that the dust when expelled through pipes 24 will not be again drawn I into the cylinders 23.
By providing the suction device, any dust which may remain in the carpet after having been effectually loosened by the action of the heaters 9 will be drawn into the suction pipe 16, from thence through the pipes 19, 20, 22, into the suction cylinders 23, and expelled through pipes 24, 25, the brush 15 acting to restore the nap to the carpet in the same manner as was accomplished by the device shown in my prior patent above referred to.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1, In a carpet cleaner, a frame, a beater section, a nap restoring brush, and a suction device disposed between the beater section and brush, said suction device comprising a suction pipe closed at its bottom and slotted in its upper face for the major portion of its length, combined guides and shut offs in said pipe, carrying projections extending through the slot by which the same may be manipulated for varying the length of said slot, a plurality of down pipes connected with the suction pipe and each provided with a shut off valve, a receiving pipe to which the down pipes are connected, a take-0E pipe connected to said receiving pipe, and suction creating means to which the takeoff pipe is connected.
2. In a carpet cleaner, a suction device comprising a suction pipe closed at the bottom and slotted in its upper face, combined guides and shut offs in said pipe carrying projections extending through the slot by which the same may be manipulated for varying the length of suction of said slot, a
plurality of down-pipes connected with the suction pipe and each provided with a shutoff valve, a receiving pipe to which the down.- pipes are connected, :1 take-off pipe connected to said receiving pipe, and suction-creating means to which the take-oh pipe is connected.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
