WILLIAM ernennen@ or eerncnrowgpuum.
Letters Patent No. 112,977, dated March21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHEESE-HOQPS.
The Schedule `referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the B am.
To all whom, 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STEINBERG, of
Bridgeport, in the county of Madison, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cheese-Hoops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a sectional side view of the hoop, and
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same.-
Figures 3 and 4 are detail views.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
In cheese making the bandage is ordinarily applied by first pressing the cheese in a sack or press-cloth, and Iwhen the cheese has` become firm enough to handle itis removed from the hoop, and the press-cloth taken from it and the bandage then applied, when the cheese is again placed in the hoop and submitted to pressure. A
The object of this invention is to complete the process in one operatiomand obviate the necessity'for removing the cheese from the hoop to place the bandage upon it, thereby making an important `saving of labor, as hereinafter more fully explained.
I provide an adjustable ring for holding the upper edge of' the bandage inside of the hoop, and this ringr is made to occupy a groove iu the hoop, so as not to interfere with the follower.
In the accompanying drawing- A- is the hoop,
B is the ring, and
C isthe bottom.
The bandage is placed in the hoop, and its upper edge is fastened in the groove a, ig.- 1, by expanding the dat band or ring B, iig. 3, into said groove, which is done by first securing one of its ends to the hoop, by inserting the nib b, fig. 3, in a notch, e, iig. 2, in the hoop, and tlien inserting a small lever through the hole c in the side of the hoop and prying the ring open, the said lever engaging with a hook, f, gs. 2
' and 3, on the other end of the ring.
E is au adjustable fulcrum for the expanding lever, and is made by a metal plate having a notch in it for holding the lever and sliding vertically in guide-pieces ou the side of the hoop.
The ring B is also pushed from the groove a by in cheese in the hoop after it has been removed.
The bottom C can have a ring h for lifting it, the ring to lie in a depression in ,the bottom when not in ,use, so that the bottom will present a fair surface toward the cheese.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
` rIhe grooved hoop Aa, in connection with the expausible ring B, substantially as and for the purpose herein specilied.
The above specification of my invention signed by nie this 14th day of February, 1871.
YVILLIAM STERNBERG. Witnesses: i
