ATTORNEY WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JESSE E. IVATEER, 0F WILKINSBIJ'RG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATIONOF PENNSYLVANIA.
HIGH-VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER.
Application filed January 10, 1912.
T 0 ali whom 'it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JESSE E. MATEER, a citizen of the United States, and a :resident of ViIlrinSburg, in the county of 'Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in- High- Voltage Transformers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to highvoltage.elec trical apparatus and it has special reference to series or current-type transformers which are adapted to 'supplyenergy at low voltages to the trip coils of ciicuitdnterrupters and electrical measuring instruments.
. The object of my invention is to provide a transformer of the class above indicated that shall be considerably less expensive than those heretofore constructed for similar service conditions.
According to mypresent invention, I utilize a single insulating sleeve or bushing through which the high-potential conductor, constituting one winding of the transformer, is threaded and on which the low-voltage winding andthe core member are mounted, and I separate the low-voltage apparatus from the remainder of the high-voltage Winding by means of an insulating spacing structure which is similar to a high-potential line insulator. L
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a partially sectional elevation of a transformer constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. '2 is a plan view of a section of the transformer shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail vieu', on a larger scale,`of one end of the insulating sleeve or bushing of the other figures.
Referring to the drawings, the trans vor casing comprising an upper section 8 and a lower section 9 which are secured vtogether by bolts 10, a. pedestal 11 and a base 12. A metal tube or rod13 extends upwardly from theupper half 8 of the frame 6 and serves as a pin on which the insulating spacing Specification of Letters'Patent.

serial No. 670,528.
structure 7, which is similar inform to a high-voltage line insulator, is mounted.
The insulator 7 comprises a series of insu` lating bellsoi` caps 1 4 set one over another and secured together by cement.
A high-potential winding 15, comprising several turns of insulated conductor, is pioduced by threading the conductor back and forth through the sleeve or bushing and allowing a suflicient external loop to pass over the insulating support?. After the high-potential winding is threaded 1 into place, theseveral turns of which it is composed are taped together and it is clamped to a metal cap 16 with which the insulator l is provided, as shown in Fig. 1. In order to economize space, I prefer to utilize a sleeve or bushing of the condenser type comprismg a plurality' of cylinders 17 and 18 of alternately insulating and conducting ma-` terials. The inner cylinder of the bushing 1s made of insulating material, and the smallest conducting cylinder, which surf vrounds the inner insulating cylinder, is electrically connected to one turn'of the highpotential winding vl5 by means of a conductlng member 19. The high-potential Winding is provided with terminals :'20 and 21.
The structure of my invention has the advantage o'f requiring only a single highpotential sleeve or bushing instead of two, as has heretofore been considered necessary when a. multi-turn high-potential Winding is utilized. For very high voltages this savingis particularly noticeable, since the cost. 'of the higl'i-potential bushings is a large item in the cost of the device. The casing 9 is separated from the outer conducting crt inder ofthe insulating bushing 1 byeune suitable means, such ascollar'QQ, of insuuting material, in order to prevent the casing from constituting apart of a. short-circuited turn of the transformer. 4 l
I desire that variations which do not de-V part from the spirit of my invention-shall be included within its scope.
I claimas my invention: 1. A higlrpotential..transformer comprising an insulating sleeve, a. supporting struc.- turetherefor, an annular core member sur rounding the sleeve within the supporting structllre, a low-potential coil on the coii member, a high-potential Winding comp-itisn parting member substantially at right angies t0 the insulating sleeve, and a highpbtential insulator mounted on the rod for` thel sieevga., winding threaded through the' sleeve, n s'npprting casing for the sleeve haring e prnjeetion extending outwardly 1Y0 subetentiey at right angles to the sleeve and an insulator mounted on the projection and spening the winding from the cere exteriergy nf the seeve.
12; "Eeetrieei apparatus comprising an ine121, ting -sleeve, u supporting member einn breeing .the .jsleeve,r'a. Winding threaded benign the@ sleeve, and means mounted "enen seid'snpporting'member for supportw the said Winding'eXteri-orly to thev sleeve. f L Elfmtrical apparatus Vcnrnprising an inenating s1eev'ea supporting member emgmeing the s1eeve,` e winding threaded i-.nnngn the sleeve', and en insulator mount est en seid supporting member and supporting 'the seid winding exteriorly to the sleeve.
5., Eeetrical apparatus comprising an insniating sleeve, a magnetizable core surrounding the sleeve, a low-tension winding surrounding the core, a conducting Casing surrounding the core and llow-tensiem Wind ing and supporting the insulating sleeve, a high-tension winding comprising a piuraity of turns threaded thi'ough the insuiet" ing sleeve, and means niounteei upon the Conducting casing fer supporting the high-tension Winding exteriory to the Sleeve.
6. Electrical apparatus cemprisng en in sulating sleeve, e, magnetizabe core surM rounding the Sleeve, .s 10W-tension Winding surrounding the com, a conducting ensing surrounding the Core and Iow-tension Winding and supporting the insulating sleeve, and insulated means Carried by the said casing for supporting the high-potential Winding exteriorly to the sleeve.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 28th `dey o Dec.
