Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19 15.,
Application an amass-29,1913. Stan m. 803,771.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jan-ton A. 'WESCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pliers and more particularly to cutting pliers.
The object of the invention is the provision of a pair of cutting pliers so con structed as to provide a cutting point which can be inserted within small or close places for cutting wire and other articles where the regular form of pliers now in use could not be used.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pair of pliers of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efiiciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and ar rangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an edge elevation of a pair of pliers constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the pivoted connection illustrating the inner face of one of the jaws in elevation. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44, of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate the two handle members which are provided adjacent their innor ends with a substantially circular portion 3 upon which is formed the jaw members 4;. The circular portions 3 are connected by means of a transverse bolt 5 having the washers 6 thereon, which bear against the outer faces of the circular portions 3, said circular portions being mounted for pivotal movement upon the bolt 5 whereby when the handle members 1 and 2 are actuated, the jaws 4 will be opened and closed as desired.
The inner faces of the jaws 4 are provided with the cut away portions 7 leaving one of the longitudinal edges of the jaws,
as shown at 8, which is sharpened to form a cutting edge, said cutting edge being extended angularly at its outerend, as shown a t and is adapted to connect with the upper corner of the gripping portion 10. The gripping portions which are formed upon the inner faces of each of the jaws 4 are serrated, as shown at 11, whereby they may be used to grasp wire and nails, tacks or any other similar articles. It will be noted from the accompanying drawings that the longitudinal portions 8 and the oblique portions 9 upon each of the jaws are adapted to meet when said jaws are closed and are to be used for cutting wire, tin or any other similar material.
In the present form of the invention. I provide a pair of side cutting and point cutting pliers, that is the longitudinal cutting edges 8 are to be used for side cutting while the angular portions 9 which extend upwardly at an angle with respect to the cutting edges 8 will be used for point cutting. that is the two meeting portions 9 are so formed that they may be readily used in small places where it is impossible to reach the material with the longitudinal cutting portions 8. The longitudinal cutting edges 8 are arranged in alinement with the handle members so that should it be desired to cut wire or other material which is arranged below the main surface, it will be impossible to use the longitudinal cutting edges 8 and it will therefore be necessary to use the angular cutting portions 9, the handle portions being raised above the main surface so I that the point 12 may be readily engaged beneath the material to be cut so as to bring the cutting edges 9 into engagement with the material.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simpleand durable pair of cutting pliers which are preferably constructed in a similar manner to the well known pliers now in use and are to be constructed so that they may be used in various places where it is impossible to use the well known form of pliers in use at the present time. It will also be apparent that the device is extremely simple in construction and can be manufac tured at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my 5 invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A pair of cutting pliers including handle 10 members mounted for pivotal movement, op-
posed jaws formed integral with the outer ends of said handles, said jaws having cut away portions forming cutting edges at one side thereof, a pair of angular gripping members formed upon the opposite side and 15 at the extreme corners of the said jaws, and the forward ends of the said cutting edges merging into a pair of terminal cutting edges that are disposed oblique to the main cutting edges. v 20 In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. JAMON A. WESCOTT. Witnesses:
