To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID V. HAWKS- WORTH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Roofs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to car roofs of the all-metallic type, and consists in the novel construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the roof structure; Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof on line 00-00 Fig. 1.
It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction which is composed of elements that may be easily manufactured and assembled, and at the same time, one in which the necessary strength is secured with a slight depth or thickness to the roof structure. To accomplish this object, I preferably employ carlines which are formed of metallic channel beams having outwardly extending flanges from the opposite sides arranged in a plane parallel to the central web of the beam. This form is one which provides relatively large compression and tension sections of the beam, and is also a form which can be readily rolled at the mill.
Carlines A of the character above described are arranged at suitable intervals and are secured to purlins B by bolts C which pass through the center of intersection and are clamped by nuts D engaging the upper face of the web E of the beam. lhis will clamp the side flanges F of the beam against the purlins and will secure rigidity for the structure.
G are the metal roofing plates which are arranged between adjacent carlines and are provided with upturned flanges H slightly spaced from the sides I of the carlines.
J is a carline cap of inverted U-shape form which fits over the carline and the upstanding flanges H of the plates G, providing sufficient clearness to permit of a limited adjustment of said flanges H. The caps J are preferably embossed at K to form a housing for the nuts D of the bolts C. To secure the caps they may be nailed or otherwise fastened at the eaves of the car as indicated at L and at the ridge, may engage the usual ridge cap M.
It will be noted that in the structure described, the flanges F of the carlines form the tension elements and the central web portion E forms the compression elements of the beam. As both of these sections are at the extreme ends of the vertical side portions I of the beam, the metal is advantageously distributed to secure great strength which permits of correspondingly decreasing the height or thickness of the roof structure.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A car roof, comprising a purlin, a carline formed of a channel beam having its parallel sides extending vertically and oppositely extending flanges at the lower ends of said sides, a clamping bolt passing through the point of intersection of said carline and purlin, a nut for said bolt bearing against the upper face of the channel, a roof plate having an upstanding flange parallel to the side portion of said carline, and a cap embracing said carline and upstanding flange and embossed to form a housing for said nut.
2. A car roof, comprising a purlin, a carline formed of a channel beam having its parallel sides extending vertically, and outwardly extending flanges at the lower ends of said sides, a clamping bolt passing through the point of intersection of said purlin and carline, a nut for said clamping bolt bearing against the upper face of the central web of said carline, roofing plates upon opposite sides of said carlinos having upstanding flanges parallel to the parallel sides of the carline and spaced therefrom, a cap embracing said carline and upstanding flange and embossed to form a housing for said nut, and means for securing said cap to the roof structure.
3.
