BEVELING INSTRUMENT.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. blows, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Beveling Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of measuring instruments and more particularly to that class of measuring instruments which are adapted to be adjusted to indicate the degree of bevel at which a rafter or the like is to be or has been cut.
An object of my invention is to provide an instrument of the above character which is constructed of but a few parts thereby lowering the cost of manufacture.
Another object of my invention is to provide an instrument of the above type which is easy and simple to operate and it is thought that the same may be operated by any inexperienced person.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my instrument, showing the same disposed upon a rafter. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the operating parts of my instrument. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an element used. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a fastening means which is used.
In the drawings I have shown a rafter 1 upon which my instrument is disposed. I desire it to be understood that my instrument can be used in connection with any form of wood work and that the rafter is shown for mere sake of illustration.
The body portion of my bevel is shown at 2 and has the slot 3 formed therein, through which operate the important ele: ments of the device. Pivoted within the slot 8 by means of a screw threaded pin 4 is a square 5. One end of the screw threaded pin 4 projects above the body portion 2. I have devised a simple means adapted to be Specification of Letters Patent.

screwed upon the end of said pin, whereby the square which is held thereon may be held in a desired position. This simple means is shown at 6 and clearly illustrated in Fig. 4.
The function performed by the square 5 is readily apparent. It not only serves to indicate the degree of angle of the disposition of a certain member hereinafter mentioned, but it itself can also be used in scribing the bevel lines when desired.
The square 5 has an offset portion 7 formed thereon to which is pivoted one end of a member 8 as shown at 9. The member 8 has a slot formed therein as at 10 through which extends a pin 11 which is similar to the pin 4 and has the fastening means 12 similar to that as shown at 6. By this arrangement it will be readily seen that the member 8 will be held pivoted within the slot 3 and pivoted to the square 5 whereby when the square 5 is moved so that the body portion 2 registers with a predetermined numeral upon the square 5 the end 13 of the member 8 will be removed in relation thereto.
The square 5 is provided with graduation marks as shown as at 14 which are adapted to register with the outer edge of the body portion 2, whereby operating said square the end 13 which is pivotally connected thereto will be placed at an angle which is indicated by the numerals adjacent the outer edge of the body portion 2.
It will be readily seen that when the square 5 is moved to a certain degree the end of the member 8 will be moved also, and when the predetermined number registers with the body portion the members 6 and 12 may be tightly screwed upon the pins 4; and 11 whereby the operating parts will be held stationary and the rafter or other wooden structure cut to conform with the degree of gevel as pointed out by the end of the mem- It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of the here inbefore disclosed device will be appreciated.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention, provided such changes fall Within the scope of the subjoin'ed claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body portion, of a square pivotally mounted therein, an angular member pivotally connected to said square and slidably mounted Within said body portion, whereby by operating the said square said angular member will also be operated and the angle assumed by said angular member Will be indicated upon said square, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body portion provided With a longitudinally extending slot, a square having one end portion pivotally mounted in said slot adjacent one end of said body portion, an extension formed upon said square adjacent its pivoted end and extending through said slot, and an angular member having one end portion pivotally connected With the extension of said square and extending through said slot adjacent the opposite end thereof and being pivotally and slidably mounted in the slot.
