To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALVA DULIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sibley, in the county of Douglas, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidor-Lifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in lifting devices, and more particularly to devices for lifting and carrying cuspidors.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character by means of which the removable depressed lid of the cuspidor can be readily removed without the hands coming in contact therewith, and by means of which the cuspidor can be lifted, carried and held while the same is being washed.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of the device showing the same gripping the body of a cuspidor. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the cuspidor, showing the device in use for lifting the lid or cover.

As shown in the drawings, my lifting device comprises a pair of shanks 10 and 11 which are crossed and pivoted together as indicated at 12. The rear portions of the shanks 10 and 11 are turned upwardly as indicated at 13, and then rearwardly as indicated at 141-, the portions between the points 13 and 14: serving as hand grips. At the other side of the pivot 12, the shanks have the oppositely bowed jaws l5 and 16, the latter of which has on its terminal end a forwardly projecting extension 17 the terminal end of the other jaw being disposed adjacent the inner end of said extension.

This device is particularly adapted for use in connection with large cuspidors which have the depressed and centrally perforated removable covers that are usually found in large public concourses, railway stations or other like places. In using the device in connection with this type of cuspidor, the extension 17 is inserted through the opening through the lid or cover and said cover lifted from the cuspidor. The cuspidor body is then embraced by the bowed jaws 15 and 16, so that the cuspidor can be carried and held while the same is being washed.

It will, of course, be understood that the bowed jaws can be just as readily engaged around the middle portion of the double cone shaped type of cuspidor, or may be engaged with a cuspiclor body whether it has vertical, straight, or inclined sides.

The prime object of the invention is to provide a device by means of which the lid of the cuspidor can be removed, and the cuspidor body lifted and held while being washed, without the necessity for touching any part of the cuspidor with the hands.

What is claimed is:

A cuspidor and centrally apertured lid handling implement comprising a pair of crossed and pivoted shanks, said shanks having upturned handle portions to preserve the level of the cuspidor while being carried, oppositely bowed cuspidor embracing jaws carried by the other ends of the shanks, one of said jaws having a longitudinally extending and outwardly curved finger on the terminal end thereof, for engagement in the central opening of said lid, the other jaw being adapted to bear against the lid to act as a fulcrum in lifting the lid from the cuspidor.
