To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHAwLEs E. WOOMERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Shoe-Horns and Button-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in and buttomhooks.

The object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character, which can be made fromone piece of material and will serve as a shoe-horn or button-hook, which ever may be desired.

Another object of this invention, is to improve and simplify devices of thischaracter, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.

With the above and other objects in view,

this invention resides in the novel features tails of construction, formations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention, Fig. 2, is a modified form of same, and Fig. 8, is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. '1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken through my invention.

Referring to the drawings by. similar characters of reference, the numeral 10 denotes in general mv' improved combination shoe-horn and button-hook, which consists of the customary curved horn portion 11, having its lower terminal 12 rolled or ormed into a shank 13, which terminates into a hook 14 thus making a device of the character described, from one piece of material.

It should be understood in this connection, that various minor changes in the deof construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

I am aware bined button-hooks and shoe-horns have been patented, but none of them are practical owing to the fact that they are either stamped from sheet metal or made in two pieces and joined together. A great disadvantage in the former type isthat when one isstamped from sheet metal, the hook and shank portion are so thin that they either injure the shoe and bend when strain is exerted thereon during the operation of buttoning a tight shoe, while when they are formed from two pieces and joined they are so expensive to manufacture that they cannot be placed on the market to sell at a reasonable price.

In order to effect the above desiderata, I take a strip of sheet metal or the like, as shown in Fig. 3, and which comprises the horn portion 11 and shank portion 13, the latter being approximately three times as wide as it is thick. The horn portion 11 is first'shaped to the desired curvature and the gradually tapering shank is then rolled un til it is circular in cross section at its outer end and gradually flattens toward-its inner end at its juncture with the horn. The free end of the shank 13 is then curved to produce the hook 14.

From the foregoing disclosures taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings it will be manifest that a shoe-horn and button-hook of the type described "is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.

Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is In a device such as described, the combination with a shoe-horn, of an integral shank formed thereon, said shank being disposed longitudinally and centrally of the shoehorn for the purpose of strengthening the same, and entirely beyond the plane of the shoe-horn in vorder to not interfere with the foot of the user, the said shank extending bevond the end of the shoe-horn, and being circular in cross section and having its inner side flush with the outer side of the of the fact that several com-- shoe-horn, and a button-hook formed on the extended end of the shank, said button-hook being circular in cross section and having its plane disposed at an angle to that of the 5 said shoe-horn for convenience in using the button-hook, Without interference from the edges of the shoe-horn.
