To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD C. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lone Wolf, in the county of Kiowa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in advertising or exhibiting apparatus and has for its primary object to generally improve and increase the efficiency of devices of the character shown and described in Patent No. 937,981, issued to me October 26, 1909.
The invention has for another of its objects to provide means for intermittently moving a web containing the advertising matter, and simple and effective means for automatically reversing the movement of the web.
The invention has for a further object to provide manually operable means whereby the reversing mechanism may be actuated and the movement of the web reversed at the will of the operator.
The invention also contemplates the provision of an improved frame in which the web and operating mechanism are mounted whereby the apparatus may be easily and conveniently arranged in a window for the display of the printed matter contained upon the web.
It is still another object of the invention to produce a device of the above character which is comparatively simple in its construction, durable and reliable in practical operation and provides an inexpensive and attractive advertising medium.
With the above and other objects in View as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of an advertising or exhibiting apparatus embodying the preferred form of the present invention;

taining the reversing mechanism; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line t-lof Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings 5 designates a permanently mounted stationary supporting structure upon which a" suitable housing or casing 6 is arranged. A perpendicular shaft 7 is mounted in the support and has its'lower end journaled in the casing 6. The lower end of this shaft is provided with a gear wheel 8 for engagement by the pinion 9 fixed to the short vertical shaft 10. The upper end of this shaft is provided with a pulley 11 which is traversed by the endless driving belt 12, said belt being driven from a motor or other suitable source of power indicated at 13. In the upper end of the supporting structure 5, the horizontal shaft 14 is mounted, said shaft being provided with a gear wheel 15 for engagement by the pinion 16 on the upper end of the perpendicular shaft 7. The shaft 14: also has a mutilated gear 17 fixed thereon, and the teeth of said gear are adapted for engagement with the gear wheel 18 fixed upon one end of the shaft 19, which is journaled in the support 5.
For supporting the web which carries the advertising matter and the reversing mechanism therefor, 1 provide a collapsible frame which includes the base bars 20, to one end of which the supporting sections 21 are hingedly connected; To the other ends of the sections 21, the bars 22 are hinged as indicated at 23, said latter bars being adapted to fold upon the sections 21. A brace bar 2% is hinged as at 25 to each of the bars 22 and rods 26 connect said bars 22 and 2 1. These rods are detachably connected at one of their ends to the bars to permit of the folding of the bars 2%. and 22. The lower ends of the bars 2% are provided with suitable stop members 27 for engagement with the base bars 20. It will thus be seen that when the frame structure is set up as shown in Fig. 2, the same is extremely strong and rigid so that the several parts thereof are held in position against all liability of collapse during the operation of the device.
Between the upper ends of the frame sections 21, a substantially cylindrical metal casing 28 is mounted, said casing being provided with a hinged door or cover 29 whereby access may be had to the interior thereof.
Upon one of the end plates 30 of the casing 28 my improved reversing'mechanism to be later referred to is mounted. In the casing 28, the parallel rollers 31 and 32 are arranged, said rollers at one of their ends being disposed in suitable bearing sockets pro-. vided upon one of the end walls of the easing. The ends of a web 33 are suitably secured to the respective rollers 31 and 32 and said web is adapted to extend upwardly from the casing 28 and over a roller 34 mounted between the upper ends of the frame sections 21.
My improved mechanism for reversing the movement of the web 33 embodies a pair of guide bars 35 which are secured in any preferred manner upon the inner face of the end wall 30 of the casing 28. The opposed edges of these guide bars are rabbeted or grooved to receive the longitudinal edges of a sliding plate 36. Upon this plate and extending in parallel relation thereto, the metal bar 37 is secured. 38 designates two pinions which are arranged between the plate 36 and the bar 37 and adjacent the opposite ends of said bar. These pinions are provided with journals mounted in the sliding plate and extending through openings in the bar 37, said journals being notched or otherwise suitably formed for the engagement of the contiguous ends of the rollers 31 and 32 respectively therewith. The sliding plate 36 is centrally provided with a longitudinal slot 39 through which the shaft 19 extends. Upon the inner end of said shaft, the gear 40 is secured, said gear being also disposed between the plate 36 and the bar 37. It will be noted from reference to Fig. 3 that the pinions 38 are disposed upon opposite sides of the gear 40 and while one pinion is engaged with the teeth of said gear, the other pinion is spaced therefrom.
In a suitable bracket member 41, secured to the end plate 30 of the casing, the trip member 42 is pivotally mounted. This trip member is provided with a cylindrical terminal which is seated in a socket 44 formed in an extension of the plate 36. The trip member 42 is further provided with an arm 45 extending transversely of the casing 28, and this arm is adapted to be engaged by a lug or tappet 46 fixed to one edge of the web 33. One of these lugs is secured to the edge of the web adjacent each end thereof. A manually operable lever 47 is also pivotally mounted as at 48 upon the end plate 30 and is connected by means of the rod 49 to one end of the trip member 42.
Upon the upper edge of one of the guide bars 35, one end of a spring plate 50 is secured, and to the other end of said plate the pin 51 is fixed, said pin operating in an opening formed in the bar 35. The lower end of this pin is tapered or pointed for engagement in the V shaped sockets or recesses 52 provided in the upper edge of the sliding plate 36.
In the operation of my improved apparatus above described, assuming that the driving mechanism has been set in operation, each time that the series of teeth on the mutilated gear 17 engage the teeth of the gear 18, the shaft 19 is rotated and through the medium of the gear 40 on said shaft and one of the pinions 38, one of the rollers 31 or 32 is positively rotated and the web wound thereon. After the teeth of the gear 17 pass out of engagement with the teeth of the gear 18, the movement of the web will stop until the teeth of the mutilated gear again come into engagement with the, gear 18, thus permitting the advertising matter displayed upon the exposed stretch of the web 33, to be read. It is of course understood that the distance which the web moves will entirely depend upon the number of teeth in the mutilated gear 17, and by simply substituting other gears having a greater or less number of teeth, said distance may be regulated as desired, in accordance with the nature of the advertising being displayed. l Vhen the web has been almost completely unwound from one roller, one of the lugs 46 on the web will engage the arm 45 of the trip member 42 and actuate said member to shift the sliding plate 36 against the holding action of the springpressed pin 51, thereby throwing one pinion 38 out of engagement with the driving gear 40 and the other pinion which was previously idle, into engagement with said gear. t is thus apparent that the movement of the web will be reversed. This action continues as long as the apparatus is in operatlon. 7
The spring pressed pin 51 assists in the sliding movement of the plate by pressure which is exerted by said pin upon the beveled or inclined edges of the notches -52 in the plate. Thus the completion of the shifting movement of the plate is assured. By the provision of the lever 47, the movement of the web may be reversed at any desired point intermediate of its ends by the operator. This is of particular advantage when the apparatus is being used for lecture purposes. It will also be understood that in this last referred to use of my invention, in the event that the periods of interruption in the movement of the web are not suliiciently great for the purposes of the lecturer, the operation of the motor 13 may be tempora rily discontinued by opening a suitable and fully understood. The invention is ad mirably adapted for the display of various kinds of advertising or the exhibition of pictures for use by lecturers. It will be obvious that by simply resorting to variations in the sizes of the several gear elements the rapidity of movement of the screen or web may be varied as desired, and as above stated, the extent of the intermittent move ments may also be regulated as may be necessitated by the particular character of the advertisements or other display matter and in order to enable the same to be thoroughly comprehended. The invention as a whole is comparatively simple in its construction, highly reliable, efiicient and durable in practical use and may be easily and quickly set up in a store window or other desirable place.
While I have above described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several elements employed, it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible of a great many minor modifications and I re serve the right to resort to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention, as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A reversing mechanism for a movable display web including spaced guide bars, a shiftable plate mounted for sliding movement between said guide bars, a bar secured at its ends to said plate and extending in parallel relation thereto, spaced pinions journaled between said shiftable plate and said bar, winding rollers for the web connected to and driven by the respective pinions, a driven gear mounted between said shiftable plate and said bar, said plate being provided with an elongated slot to receive the gear shaft, and a trip device pivotally connected to said shiftable plate, and means on the web to actuate said device and alternately shift said pinions into engagement with the driven gear and reverse the rotation of said rollers.

the gear shaft, a trip lever fulcrumed adjacent to one of its ends, said end of the lever being pivotally connected to said shiftable plate, means on the web to actuate said lever and shift said plate to alternately engage the pinions with the driven gear and reverse the rotation ofsaid rollers, and means mounted upon one of said guide bars cooperating with said shiftable plate to insure the completion of its shifting movement.
3. A reversing mechanism for a movable display web including spaced guide bars, a shiftable plate mounted for sliding movement between said guide bars, a bar secured to its ends to said plate and extending in parallel relation thereto, spaced pinions journaled between said shiftable plate and said bar, winding rollers for the web connected to and driven by the respective pinions, a driven gear mounted between said shiftable plate and said bar, said plate being provided with an elongated slot to receive the gear shaft, a trip lever fulcrumed adjacent to one of its ends, said end of the lever being pivotally connected to said shiftable plate, means on the web to actuate said lever and shift said plate to alternately engage the pinions with the driven gear and reverse the rotation of said rollers, said shiftable plate being provided with spaced notches in its upper edge, a yieldable plate fixed at one end to one of said guide bars, a pin secured to the other end of said plate and movable through the guide bar, and a spring cooperating with said yieldable plate to force the pin into one of the notches in said plate and insure the completion of its shifting movement.
4;. A reversing mechanism of the class described comprising a shiftable plate, spaced pinions journaled upon said plate, a driven gear, said shiftable plate having an elongated slot to receive the gear shaft, a trip lever fulcrumed adjacent one of its ends, said end of the lever being pivotally connected to said shiftable plate, manually operable means connected to the other end of said lever to actuate the same and shift said plate to alternately engage the pinions mounted thereon with said driven gear, and yieldable means cooperating with said shiftable plate to hold the same against casual sliding movement and maintain the pinion in engagement with the driven gear.
