MUSIC-STAFF-LINING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914:-
Application filed November 14, 1913. Serial No. 801,048.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER C. CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Missoula, in the county of Missoula, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Staff-Lining Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ruling devices and has particular reference to the provision of such devices adapted to hold chalk or other marking means.
The specific object of the present invention resides in the provision of a device particularly adapted for marking musical staves upon a blackboard and includes means for holding chalk or other similar marking material.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the class described which comprises a minimum number of parts so that it is eflicient and durable in use and may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts to be more fully hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein, similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved marking device, Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the chalk holding members.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates the base or head member to which is secured a handle portion 6. Extending forwardly from this head member is a plurality of chalk gripping members, five in number and disposed in spaced parallel relation. As the chalk holding members are each identical with the others only one will be described. Each comprises a shank 7 formed of spring steel and secured at its inner end to the head portion. The chalk gripping portions are held by a shaft 8 having its rear end bifurcated and receiving between its furcations the forward end of the shank 7. Each of the chalk gripping portions 9 comprises a single plate bent so as to form a semi-cylindrical section and having formed at each end thereof a tongue 10 curved around the shaft 8. Two of these members are positioned on the shaft with their concaved faces opposed to receive therebetween the chalk. The upper por tion of each member 9 is provided with an outwardly extending tongue 12 adapted to be gripped by the operator to swing the members apart and thus release the chalk held therebetween, the members being normally held in clamping relation by a coil spring 13 on the shaft having its ends eX- tended at If and passed through openings 15 in the tongues 12 to rest on the outer faces of the gripping members. One of the chalk gripping portions of each pair necessarily has its tongues 10 soldered or otherwise suitably fixed to the shaft 8 so that the chalk will be held against swinging around the shaft 8.
From the foregoing it is observed that a very simple structure has been provided wherein the chalk may be readily secured or removed, as desired. The resiliency of the shanks 7 serve to compensate for any giiference in the length of the chalk memers.
It will be understood that the device is not limited to use in marking musical staves, as it may be adjusted for other purposes.
What is claimed is:
1. A. ruling device comprising a head portion, resilient members extending in spaced relation from the head portion, shafts carried by said resilient members, gripping members pivotally mounted on said shafts and means for resiliently holding the gripping members in clamping relation.
2. A ruling device comprising a head portion, a plurality of spaced parallel shafts carried by the head portion, gripping members each comprising a semi-cylin- In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
ELMER o. CHAMBERS.

drical plate tongues on said plate bent about a respective shaft, tWo of said members being positioned on each shaft, outwardly extending tongues on the upper portions of said members provided with openings and a coil spring on each shaft having its ends extended through the openings.
Copies of this patent, may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Gommissionet of Iatents, Washington, D. G.
