To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARD RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pressure-Contrclled Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pressure controlled valve and more particularly to a valve which is operated by air orother fluid under high pressure to admit fluid under pressure to various sorts of regulating mechanism such as compressor unloaders and the like. One type of valve used for this purpose consists of a needle valve attached to a spring controlled diaphragm the valve side of the diaphragm being exposed to compressed air or other fluid which at a certain pressure will force back the diaphragm, thus openingthe needle valve and allowing the fluid, the pressure of which was the means of opening the valve, to pass through the valve to whatever mechanism it is used for operating. Where the operating pressure is high however, say about 150 to 200 lbs. diflieulties arise from this construction as the diaphragm must be of a certain diameter to have the necessary flexibility. This involves a diaphragm of such a large area that an extremely heavy spring is necessary to balance the fluid pressure on it. Furthermore the high pressure air passing through the needle valve seat has a great tendency to score it and thus make the valve leaky.
The object of the present invention is to obviate these difliculties and to provide a valve of simple construction and eflicient operation for use with air or other fluid at high pressures.
With this object in view I have devised a valve a practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawing which shows a vertical section through the valve and the regulating mechanism operated thereby. The valve is shown in connection with an intake closing compressor regulator such as shown, for instance, in my former Patent #998,201, July 18, 1911, this regulator consisting of a balanced valve 1 in the intake line 2 of the compressor, which is normally held open by a spring 3 and closed at a certain pressure in the receiver by the action of fluid under pressure on the piston Specification of Letters Patent.

4 which is attached to the valve 1 and slides in a cylinder 5.
The valve which admits the fluid under pressure and which is the subject of this application comprises a needle valve 6 which governs a passage 7 leading into the cylinder 5 from a valve chamber 8. The valve 6 is provided with an operating stem 9 to which is attached an operating diaphragm 10 to the surface of which the high pressure fluid is admitted through an inlet 11, the diaphragm 10 forming the end wall of an annular chamber 12 surrounding the valve stem 9. .Attached to the valve stem, at the other extremity of the high pressure chamber 12 is a balancing diaphragm 13 whose area exposed to the high pressure fluid is less than the diaphragm 10. This balancing diaphragm serves to counterbalance a large part of the thrust of the high pressure fluid tending to open the needle valve 6, allowing the diaphragm 10 to be of the necessary size and flexibility. The remainder of the thrust of the high pressure fluid is taken up by a spring 14 which presses against the rear end of the valve stem and whose tension can be adjusted by a screw 15, so that the amount of pressure required to open the valve 6 can be varied.
The fluid whose flow into the cylinder 5 to actuate the valve 1 or in any other mechanism to which the device is applied, is controlled by the valve 6, and herein called the controlled fluid, is supplied to the chamber 8 from a source of considerably lower pressure than the high pressure operating fluid which controls the opening of the valve 6. This obviates the scoring of the valve seat by the passage of high pressure air and thus removes one of the difficulties encountered in the old valve. This lower pressure fluid is supplied to the chamber 8 by a pipe 16 and in order to balance the thrust of this fluid on the balancing diaphragm 13 tending to open the valve 6, the lower pressure fluid is also supplied to closed chamber 17 to which the lower surface of the operating diaphragm 10 is exposed, by a pipe 18.
In operation, when the fluid in the chamber 12 reaches a pressure high enough to allow the larger area of the diaphragm 10 to overcome the effect of the balancing piston 13 and the spring 14% the valve 6 will be drawn away from its seat allowing the lower pressure air in the chamber 8to pass into the cylinder 5 and operate the valve 1. By this construction the diameter of the operating diaphragm can be made of sufficient size Without necessitating the use of a very heavy balancing spring, the balancing diaphragm making only a small part of the operating diaphragms area Furthermore the using for the controlling fluid of a second source under considerably less pressure obviates the scoring of the valve and the valve seat occasioned by the passage of the high pressure fluid therethrough.
It is to be understood that the present showing and description discloses only one specified modification of my invention and other forms and modifications are included in the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the claims.
