To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, FRANK P. Pnn vonn- GAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dagus Mines, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pockets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in pockets, more particularly to the pockets of trousers, and has for one of its objects I to provide a simply construc'z'ted pocket whereby the contents are prevented from accidental displacement when the wearer is in a sitting or lying position.

With these and other objects lnview, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out side view of the improved pocket.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the Views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved device is designed. more particularly for use in connection with trousers having side opening pockets, an in the drawings a portion of a pair of trousers including a side opening pocket is represented at 10 and the pocket opening at 11 of-the vertical form. v

The pocket is formed of the usual-materials and comprises the body portion 12, and extends above the pocket opening 11 at the upper end, as shown at 13. The ordinary construction of pocket is indicated by the dotted line 14, and the improved pocket is formed somewhat longer than usual, and with a rearwardly inclined. bottom as represented at 15. The improved pocket is also provided with a rearward extension 16 which is extended for a short distance above the lower line 18 of the pocket opening 11, as

shown at 17. By this means the pocket is increase" in width rearwardly, and the rearward extension also extended upwardly above thelower line of the pocket opening. By this simple means the articles contained in the pocket will find their way to the lowest point 15 of the pocket, which in the improved structure by reason of the inclined bottom of the pocket, will be retained at a. greater distance rearwardly than in the usual form of pocket. By this arrangement also the contents of the pockettwhen the wearer is in a sitting position will remain in the extended portion 1617, and

. be thus maintained continuously at the rear of the pocket'opening, consequently no danger exists of the articles falling from the pocket when the wearer assumes a sitting or lying position. This simple arrange- I ment of the pocket materially increases its efficiency and utility, as will be obvious.

Another advantage gained by this form of pocket is that the articles within the pocket are retained at the side of the trousers instead of toward the front so-that the contents of the pocket will not be conspicuous.

The improved device is simple in con struction, can be manufactured without materially increasing the cost of the pocket or of the trousers.

The extensions 1617 may be of any required size, and increased or decreased to correspond to the uses to which the pockets are applied. Some kinds of trousers require larger pockets than others and the improved pocket is readily adapted to material enlargement by increasing the size of the extensions 1617 without changing the appearance of the trousers or rendering them clumsy or cumbersome.

Having thus' described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

In a pair of trousers having a vertical pocket opening, a pocket having a hand opening at its rear upper end-coinciding with the pocket opening of the trousers, the rear portion of the pocket having a rearward and upward extension beyond the 5 the lower end of the pocket opening, the

point of said intersection being at the lowest point of the main pocket.
