Description

J. BUCKINGHAM. Grain Drier.
Patehted Feb. 28. 1871.
NI'I'ED STATES PATENT OFFICE J OHN BUOKINGHAM, OF VETHERSFIELD, CONNEOTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAlN-DRIERS.
Spocification follning pm't of Letters Patent N0. 112, 118, dated Fcbruary 28, 1871.
T0 all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN BUGKINGHAM, of Wethersfield, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new am]. Improved Grain-Drier; 2md I (10 hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descript-ion thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the sarne, reference being 11ad 130 the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specifieation.
This invention relates to improvements in grain-drying a-pparatus; and it consists in a eombination 0f steam-heating eoi1s am]. ventilators in a bin o1 other chamber, through which the grain is caused to flow slowly from t0p t0 bot-tom, in a simple a-nd effieient manne1, f0r applying i;he heat and carrying oft Lhe vapor generated thereby.
Figure l is a sectional elevatiou of my improved apparatus; and Fig. 2 is another sectional elevation, taken perpendicular 1:0 that 0f Fig. 1.
Sin1ilar letters 0f reference indicate c0rre sponding parts.
A is a strong bin with a perforated bottom, B, and a broad perforated gate, C, f0r regulating ehe fl0w through it of the grain, which is to be supplied als the t0p, so that it Will be kept free.
D represents a c0il 0f steam-heating pipe, which may be arranged in upper a-11d lower tiers, with vertical connecting-pipes E, or in any other approved way, by which t-he heat may be distributed throughout the mass of gra1n.
F represents A-shaped ventilators, travers- .ing t11e bin fron1 side to side, am]. extending through the side walls, preferably into flues G, for facilitating the draft or circulation, said side Walls having openings under the bars 001- responding to the grooves in their under sides, in which the vapor finds unobst-ructed escape. These ventilators may tmverse ehe bins, so that; eacl1 tier makes an angle with the next, and 1nay be arran ged as close together as found best. Their f01m is well ca-lculated 130 change the grain about in the bin and bring ii; all in concaci: with the1n.
The outside vertical flues may or 1nay not be used in connection with tl1ese ventilators, zus preferred.
The disclmrge-holes are distributed over the bottom 0f the bin, in 0rder that ehe grain may m0ve down evenly and be a1ike exposed to the heat.
II; Will be seen that this arrangement is aal culated to apply the heat thoroughly and quiekly, and as quickly dispose of the vapor thrown oft by the action 0f the heat 011 ehe dzunp grain.
Having thus described 1ny iuvention, I claim as new ELD(1 desire 130 secure by Letters Patan's- 1. The perforated bottom B sind perforated gate O, the stezun-heated c0i1 D D and counecting-tubes E, and the horizontal ventilators F, all combined, as described, With the bin, f0r the purpose specified.
2. The horizontal ventilators F and flue G,
combined, as described, With the bin A, f0r the 7 purpose specified.
