larly to a shoe of this type designed for use 7 as a burial shoe, which, through its adjustability provides a series of usable sizes in a shoe constructed one single last.

The main object of the present invention is the provision of a shoe of this type including an upper having the heel portion thereof wholly free of connection with the sole, with the free heel flap connected to or formed integral with one side upper and adapted to overlap and arranged for adjustable connection longitudinally of the other side upper, whereby the length of the shoe may be varied as necessary.

The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved shoe. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the heel flap open. Fig.3 is a broken plan of the shoe with the heel flap disconnected from the side upper.

In constructing the improved shoe, I provide the usual sole 1, forward or toe portion 2, and upper 3, the latter having the usual meeting edges 4: adapted to be laced or otherwise connected in securing the shoe in position. The upper 3 on one side, preferably the inner side of the shoe, terminates short of the rear end of the sole, the upper edge of the upper extending rearwardly and downwardly and terminating on the sole line. The opposing side of the upper is secured to the edge of the solo in any usual or preferred manner for a length coextensive with that of the inner section of the upper just described, the said opposing side being then extended in the form of a free flan 5, of a length to extend around the heel edge of the sole and overlie the first men- I tioned or short side of the upper. The flap 5 is wholly free of connection with the sole, and its free terminal is of reduced width and provided on its inner surface with one member 6 of a fastening device, adapted for cot peration with any one of a series of co acting fastening members 7, secured to the short side of the upper and extending longitudinally thereof.

By the arrangement described, it is obvious that the heel portion of the shoe, which is in effect formed by the flap 5, may be increased or decreased in its spacing from the toe portion of the shoe, by cooperation of the fastening member 6 with the appropriate cooperating member 7, and to this extent the shoe is adjustable.

In the particular use for which the shoe. is designed, it will be apparent that the inner sides of the shoes are concealed, as is also the heel portion, and therefore in this use the elements constituting the adjustable feature of the shoe are entirely concealed, and the shoe has the appearance of a proper and exact lit.

The ability to disconnect the flap from the short side of the upper, in addition to providing a shoe adjustable as to length, also permits the convenient application or removal of the shoe in the particular de scribed use, so that an additional important object is gained by the particular construction.

It is of course to be understood that the shoe is to be constructed of any desired material or materials, and that I contemplate the use of any desired type of fastening means for adjustably securing the flap to the short side of the upper.
