SUPPORTER.
Application filed January 13, 1913, Serial No. 741,768.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RoswnLL A. Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, New Haven county, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to supporters composed of a piece of Webbing and a buckle and relates particularly to supporters in which buckles of the rustless type are employed and my objects are the production of a supporter in which the web will be securely held in the buckle without sewing, in which the web required will be less than when sewed, and which will be cheaper to produce than a sewed supporter.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the supporter buckle; Fig. 2 a sectional. view of a supporter; and Fig. 3 a back view of an open buckle with the end of the web therein.
The supporter consists of a buckle of any desired form containing a webbing slot wider at the top than the bottom and a piece of web with a metal tip on one end.
In the preferred form the buckle consists of two members a and Z). The front a is formed of sheet metal and consists of a finger piece 1, a clamping lever 2 provided with teeth 3 and ears ll forming bearings for the back. The back 5 consists of a piece of wire with its ends 55 engaging the ears 4E-4lof the front to form a hinge joint, sides 66 and a web bar 7. The sides 66 are bent inwardly or inset at 8 so that the webbing slot between the front and the back bar is wider at the top part, next to the lever than it is at the bottom part, next to the web bar. The web 9 is provided with a metal tip 10 long enough to pass through the wide, top, part of the webbing slot but too long to pass through the narrow, bottom part.
In making up the supporter the buckle is webbed in the usual manner, the tipped end of the web being pushed through the wide part of the slot from the rear and the free reach also passed through the slot from the front crowding the tipped end into the narrow part of the slot so that it cannot be pulled out. On closing the buckle the lever presses the two thicknesses of web against the back bar and, by reducing the depth of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Renewed October 8, 1914. Serial No. 865,773.
the slot, the tipped end can not rise high enough to pull out. The ends of the tip also lie flat against the sides of the back at the bends and bunching is avoided.
The buckle is peculiarly adapted for use in making up garters, suspenders and the like garment supporters and by employing the combinations herein described the labor and expense of sewing are avoided, and the saving in the amount of web required is material in that the amount covered by the tip is much less than that required for sewing.
It is obvious that the buckle shown is but one form of a number to which the invention may be applied and I do not limit myself thereto it being merely my preferred form except as defined by the appended claims.
I claim 1. A supporter containing a buckle comprising a front composed of a finger piece and a lover, a back hinged thereto provided with a webbing slot wider at the top than at the bottom in combination with a web a metal tip on one end of the web, the tipped end passed through the slot and lying in the bottom, narrow, part of the slot and the free reach of the web passed between the tipped end and the lever through the top, wide, part of the slot locking the tipped end of the web securely in the narrow part of the slot.
2. A supporter containing a bucket comprising a front composed of a finger piece and a lever, a back hinged thereto provided with a web bar and sides, the sides being bent inwardly so that a webbing slot is formed wider at the top than at the bottom, in combination with a web, a metal tip on one end of the web, the tipped end passed through the slot and lying in the bottom, narrow part of the slot and the free reach of the web passed between the tipped end and the lever through the top, wide, part of the slot locking the tipped end securely in the narrow part of the slot.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
ROSWELL A. MOORE.
