BENDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed October 30, 1913. Serial No. 798,268.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. Horr- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bending Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for making bends in metal rods, pipes, tubes, etc, and its object is to provide a novel and improved bending device characterized by a sweep-arm which carries a bending roller engageable with the work to bend the same around a former.
The invention also has for its object to provide means whereby the former may be adjusted relative to a stationary work holder and thus locate the bend in the work at the desired point.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which a perspective view of the device is shown.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a bed or base-plate adapted to be fastened down on a work bench, table or other support. Near one of the corners of the bed-plate is mounted an upstanding lug 6 having a horizontal aperture 7 through which the pipe or other work to be bent is passed, and whereby it is held. In the bedplate is a series of apertures 8 extending in a row diagonally across the bed-plate and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aperture 7. In a selected one of the apertures S is mounted an upstanding pin or bolt 9 on which is fulcrumed a horizontal sweep arm which is forked, the fork branches 10 being spaced vertically, and their outer ends having alined apertures to receive the pin 9. On the pin 9, between the fork branches, is also mounted a former around which the work is bent, said former comprising a horizontally positioned roller 11 having a grooved periphery. The fork branches also Copies of this patent may be obtained for flve cents each. by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
carry a pin or bolt 12 on which is mounted a bending roller 13 having a grooved periphery. The fork branches have a series of apertures 14 for the pin 12, into a selected one of which the latter is placed. The series of apertures 14 runs in the direction of the length of the sweep arm, and by providing the same, the bending roller 13 may be set different distances from the former, and di fferent sized bending rollers may be employed. The arm sweephas a grip 15.
In operation, the pipe or other piece of work 16 to be bent is inserted into the aperture 7, and between that portion of the fork branches 10 lying between the rollers 11 and 13, the sweep arm being first swung to extend at a right angle to the work. The sweep arm is now swung around to carry the roller 13 around the roller 11, whereby the desired bend is made in the work, the latter being bent around the roller 11. The point at which the bend is made can be readily varied by changing the position of the pin 9 relative to the lug 6, these parts thus serving as a gage.
I claim:
. A bending device comprising a bed plate having a series of apertures, a lug mounted on the bed plate and havin a transverse work-holding aperture, the aforesaid series of apertures in the bed plate being parallel to the longitudinal axis of said work-holding aperture, a pin mounted in a selected one of said series of apertures in the bed plate, a sweep arm fulcrumed on the pin, said sweep arm having a longitudinal series of apertures, a former mounted on said pin, a pin mounted in a selected one of the apertures in the sweep arm, and a bending roller mounted on the last mentioned pin.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
