HERMAN PAUSE, OF RAMONA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY T. 1?. JAMES, 013' SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
HANDLE non HANDSAWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 13, 1913. Serial No. 734,760.
zen of the United States, residing at Ramona, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Handles for Handsaws, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in handles for saws and the object of my im-- provement is to provide a handlefor an ordinary hand-saw that may be ad ustably secured to the blade of the saw in such manner that it may be turned to he in a plane that is disposed at any desired angle to the plane of the saw-blade. I accomplish this object by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a hand-saw embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a View partly inside elevation and partly in vertical cross-section of the same.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
Briefly my improvement consists in providing a hand-saw blade with a blade-holder to which blade-holder is adjustably attached a handle that is adapted to be grasped by ones hand, such handle being adapted by suitable means to be disposed with its plane at any desired angle with respect to the plane of the saw-blade and there securely fastened.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, 5 is an ordinary saw-blade which has a blade-holder 6 secured to its wider end in the usual manner, by screws 7. The bladeholder is formed with a flat end 8 that lies in a plane at right angles to the plane of the saw-bladeand a flat strip 9 of any suitable material, as of metal, is secured to the end 8 of the blade-holder by screws 10, the strip 9 being provided with a hole through its central portion.
A handle 12 is secured by screws 14 to a flat strip 13, of metal, that is similar in shape to the strip 9 thus adapting said handle 12 to be secured to the blade-holder 6 bya screw-stud l5 and a nut20, said stud 15 being integral with an end flange 17 that .15 set in and secured to the blade-holder 6.
A serrated boss 18 is secured to the face a of the strip 13 to project within a circular recess disposed within the central portion of the strip 9 where it may engage with correspondingly shaped teeth 16 that are provided on the flange 17 whereby the ham dle 12 may be maintained in @a desired angular position with respect to the plane of the saw-blade 5 by screwing the nut 20 forcibly against the back surface of the strip 13, as indicated by Figs. 1 and 2.
As the plate 9, and metal strip 13 are of the same length, their contacting flat surfaces fit closely together at any adjustment, and the interlocking teeth of the flange 17 v and serrated boss 18 provide an annular interlocking between the plate and strip extending around the screw stud.
The operation of my device is very simple; when the saw is to be used for making straight cuts in easily accessible positions the handle may be set and secured in a plane with the saw-blade like the fixed handle of an ordinary hand-saw; but when an angular cut is to be made in a position that is not easily accessible then the thumbscrew 20 may be unscrewed sullieiently to permit the teeth 18 of the bar 13 to ride over the teeth 10 of the flange 17 thus permitting the handle 12 of the saw to be turned about the screw-stud 15 to any desired angle with respect to the plane of the blade 5 whereupon the thumbnut 20 may again be tightened to secure thehandle in the desired angular position.
What I claim is:
The combination with a saw blade, of a blade-holder having a flat rear face, a plate secured to said flat face and formed with a central opening, a screw stud extending, through sald openmg and provided at lts inner end with an integral serrated flange set into and secured to said plate, a handle provided with a Hat metal strip corresponding to the plate of the blade-holder, and
Patented Dec; 1, 1914:.
adapted to closely fit against said plate at any adjustment, a serrated boss integral With the inner face of said strip concentric In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe with said stud, and a nut on the outer end my name this 24th day of September A. D., of said stud, said boss being in engagement L913.
With the serrations of said flange to provide HERMAN PAUSE. an annular interlocked connection between Witnesses: 7
said plate and strip extending around said H. F. JOHNSON,
stud. L. W'RIGI-IT.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. 0.
