Description
B. S. ROBERTSON. PACKAGE TYING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2, 1913.
I 1,1 1 9,638. Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
Witnesses Inventor Attorneys view which will appear as UNITED STATES PATENT ornron.
BEnronn SHELTON ROBERTSON, or ROCKY Moinv'r, VIRGINIA.
PACKAGE-TYING nnvron.
Application filed June 2. 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Bnnrono S. ROBERT- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rocky Mount, in the county of Franklin and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Package-Tying Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a package tie and more particularly to a tie for securing a package or bundle of letters.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device which can be quickly attached and detached and which may be used any number of times.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character so constructed that it can be held steadily in osition during the tying.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 2, partly in section.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the base which is preferably formed of flexible material such as thin metal or leather. A projection 2 having the perforation 3 therein is formed on one side of the base and is adapted to be engaged by the thumb when tying a package. A cord or wire 4: is secured to the plate through the perforation 5 formed therein and the free end of cord or wire is passed through an eye 6 secured on the top of the base. The spring clips 7 are secured to the base by means of the rivets 8 and, as shown, these clips are slightly turned upward at each end and the rivets 8 engage the same in the center.-
In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown a slightly modified form of the invention in which I do away with the eye 6.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
Serial No. 771,328.
In Fig. 4; I have shown a still further modified form of the invention in which I only use one clip.
When it is desired to applythe tie to a package the base is placed on top of the package, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and the thumb is placed on the projectlon 2 while the fingers engage the underside of the package. The cord extends around the package as shown, passing through the eye 6 and is then engaged beneath one end of the clip as shown in Fig. 1. It will be seen that the strain in this position will draw the cord tight and that the projection 2 is in such a position on the base as to form a pivot point between the connected end of the cord and the end of the clip. By this arrangement the base is securely held to the package during the tying. After passing the cord beneath one end of the clip as shown in Fig. 1, it is then wrapped around the several ends of the clips and will be held securely inposition. By using the form of the invention as shown in Fig. 1 after the end of the cord has been passed through the eye 6 a loop will have been formed which is of particular advantage in applying the tie to a large package.
In the two modified forms of the invention the manner of applying is the same wit the exception that the cord is not passed through an eye.
In carrying out my invention and putting the same into practical use I may provide a number of these tying cords of various lengths. If desired I might indicate on the devices the length of the cords in order that the person using the same may secure the device having the proper length of cord for securing or tying the desired package. By providing the perforation 3 in the projection 2 the thumb will sink into the perforation whereby the device may be held more steadily and the perforation may be used for hanging the devices when not in use.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
devices having the A package tie comprising a base, a plural- 100 ity of spring clips secured parallel on the ase, a cord connected to one end of the base, an eye secured to the base between the clips in t e presence of two Witnesses. and in line With the connecting point of the BEDFORD SHELTON ROBERTSON. 5 cord, and a projection formed on one side of the base at a point between the ends of the clips and connecting point of the cord.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature Witnesses SELINA VVILLSON, I. E. SIMPSON. Copies this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressi ng the Commissioner of Patents. Washington D. G. 1
