- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. Mol-IUN, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Car-Roofs, of which improvement the` following is a specification.
This invention relates to car roofs, and more particularly to a construction in which metal roofing sheets are supported on metal carlines having caps covering the joints between the adjacent side edges of said sheets, and one of the objects of my invention is to provide lan improved connection for supporting and holding the ends of the earlines and the caps at the side plate of the car.
Another object is t0 stilen the flange of the roofing sheet and to provide means for deflecting rain, snow or any foreign matter which may be driven along the surface of the end flange of the roof sheet, to the outside of the end flange of the carline cap.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a transverse section of a portion of a car roof at the eaves and showing the carline, cap and my improved connections in elevation; Fig. 2, a plan of same, the cap being cut away at oneside of its center line; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the same with one half' of the cap removed; Fig. 4, an elevation of a portion cfa roofing sheet; and Figs. i and 6, transverse sections of same showing the outwardly and inwardly pressed strengthening ribs.
According to the construction shown in the drawings the frame work of the roof' includes metal carlines, 12, preferably troughshaped, which are support-ed at their ends upon the side plates, 11, of the car frame, and carry the metal roofing sheets, 7. These roofing sheets are preferably of a width corresponding to the spacin of the carlines and have their` adjacent si e edges extending over the trough of said earline in any convenient shape. The sheets are also pret erably provided with down-turned end flanges. 8, overhanging the sides of the car and spaced therefrom to allow clearance for a relative movement between the canti-ame and said sheets during the racking and twisting of the car in ruiming.

The bracket also has a vertical flange, 10, extending down over the side of' the car and provided with one or more lugs or bosses, 1T, adapted to engage the under side of'the end flanges, 14, of the cap section, and space the same from the bracket. Bolts, 18, passing through the cap section, the bosses, and the side plate serve to securely hold -the parts in their proper positions. The bosses are preferably located one at each side of' the trough in the cai-line and thus provides ample space for the discharge of any water that may drain out of the carline trough beneath the end flange of' the cap section.
As shown in Fig. 1, the sheathing boards, 15, are preferably extended up to the top of the side plate 11, and with this construe tion the flange, 10, of the bracket is bolted directly against said boards and extends down to the facia, 16, which is attached to the side of' the car below the top of" the side plates. For the purpose of' stifl'ening the end flanges of the roofing sheets, I provide a rib, Q0, pressed outward in the flange of the sheet near its end and adjacent to the end flange, 14, of the cap, 13, whore it also Serves as a deflector for prevmiting rain, snow, cinders or other foreign material which may be driven along the caves of the car, from entering beneath the cap flange. and thence into the trough of' the carline, all such mattei' being deflected bv the rib to the outside of the cap flange. Other stiftening ribs, 21, for the flange of the roofing carline and drains out at its ends over the side brackets and beneath the down-turned end .flanges of the cap section; and that .there is a free circulation of air beneath the end flanges of the 'caps and through the carlinetrough'.- i

l. .ln a car roof, the lcombination of a metal carline having a drain trough, brackets for the ends'of said carline mounted on the side plate,'and havingvertical flanges extending down over the sides .of the car, metal roofing sheetshaving their adjacent side edges located over the trough of said carline, aY carline cap covering the edges of the roofing sheets and having end flanges eX- tending down over said bracket, said bracket charging at the sides mienne having a bossv engaging the under side of the cap flange upon each side off the discharge of the carline trough, and fastening bolts for thej cap flange extending through said bosses and the side plate.
2. lln a car roof, metal roofing sheets having adjacent transverse side edges, kand end flanges turned down over the side of the car, transverse cap sect1ons covering the adj acentside edges of the roofing sheets and having down-turned end flanges 'overhanging the side of the car outside of the flanges of the roofing sheets, and vertical sti'ening ribs formedon the flanges of theroofing sheets adjacent to the cap flanges.r
