Description

M. COHN.
SKIRT. APPLICATION FILED DEG413, 191s.

fyjUNlTED sTZlTE AT OFFICE" MAX corny, or PHILADELPHIA, rminsrtvama.
- material of the skirt lying Smooth thereon.
To all whom it may concernr Be it known that I, MAX .ConN',acitizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia-and State of Pennsylvania hav'e invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Skirts, of wh ch thefollow ng 1s a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in skirts, and more particularly to undersklrts or petticoats, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of skirt which will neatly fit any ordinary size ofwaist, and lie smoothly onthe figure.
A'further object is to provide antim- Y proved construction of skirt having slits in opposite sides thereof with an elastic band or belt crossing both slits and confined within the edge of the skirt at the waist.
WVith these and other objects in view, the I invention-consists in certain novel-features.
of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as Wlll be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. y a a.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved skirt, andFigL 2 is a viewin section through the waist portion of the skirt illustrating the elastic band extended and the 1 represents my improved skirtwhichis provided with an ordinary placket 2having snap buttons 3 or other suitable fastening means to close the skirt" at the back. The
waist portion of the skirt is provided with a hem and said hem portion at opposite sides of the skirt is slit as shown at 5.
While, of course, my invention is not limited toany particular number of {these slits,
I preferably locate one'at'each side of the skirt and extend, the slit downwardly as far as is necessary to provide for a Wide range of adjustment of the skirt at the waist. y
In the hem 4, I locate an elastic band 6 which extends entirely around the waist of the skirt, and across both slits 5. The front portion ofthe skirt is sewed directly to the elastic band 6 at the intermediate portion 'of the latter as shown by thelines of stitch f ing 7 By thus sewing'the front portion to the elastic band, such portion remains smooth, anddoes not wrinkle at any adjustment.
The side portions of the skirt are gathered Specification of Letters Patent,
Application filed December 13, .1913, Serial No. 806,360.

atiboth sides 61% the slits 5, so that the band 6 1s free to expand, at the same time allow ing the goods to adjust themselves nicely overt-he figure. The ends of the band 6 are rigidly secured in v the end portions of the hem 4: by
means of the snapvbutton members 3. In other words, the snap buttonmembers extend ent rely through the goods of the skirt and through the ends ofthe tape, and I preferably employ twopairs of snap button members as clearly shown in Fig. 2 to proalso rigidly hold the ends of the elastic band. a
Fig 1 shows the skirt in a somewhat exaggerated positionas the'slits 5 are shown in open position, whereas in ordinary use these slits will be closed when the skirt is on the figure. The slits, however, allow the goods to be adjusted easily on the elastic band, and furthermore permit the band to myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A ladys skirt having a hem at the waist line, said skirt having slits therein at opposite sides extending downwardly from the waist line, and said skirt having a placket at theback, a single elastic band extending through the hem and throughout its intermediate portion secured to the front portion ofthe skirt, said elastic band ex tending enti'relyaround the skirt across the slits. andhaving securing devices secured thereto at the placket in the skirt, substantially as described.
2.A-ladys skirt having a hem at the waist line, said hem having slits therein, a
' single elastic band extending uninterruptedly around the skirt at the waist within vide a strong connection for the skirt, and
the hem, said band at its ends secured to the 3. A skirt having a placket at the rear there0f,' and a hem around the skirt at the Waist line, said skirt in its upper portion having slits at opposite sides extending through the hem, a single elastic band extending around the skirt at the Waist 10- cated within the hem and extending across the slits, said band intermediate its ends secured to the front portion of the. skirt,
Copies of thispatent may he obtained for and holding the front portion smooth, said "skirt at opposite sides of the slits supported ingathers on the band, and snap button members secured through the hem and through the ends of the band, securing the g '[ba'iid' at'its ends to the skirt at the'opposite sides of the placket, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification-in the presence of two subscribing WiiJIlQSSES.,.
