Description

lifilllii'irli tait-5 JOHN nitratos, or scnnn'ron, .rnNNsYLvaNta Let-.ars raam; No. 111,870, dated February 14, 1871.
IMPRVEMNT IN COQKlNG-RANGES.'
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of Vthe s'ame.
To all whom it 'may concern l Be it known that I, Joris A. Pinon, of Scranton,
in the county of Luzerne and State ot.Pennsylvania,`
have invented a new and useful Improvement 'in Ranges;, and I do herebyldeciare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine,
reference heilig had to the-accompanying drawingv making part ot' this speelden-tion, in which-` Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation, and Figures 2 and 3`are transverse sectional eleva-tions. This invention consists in the combination ot certain of the fines or" a range or stove with a chamber located below them in the base of the range, ffbr the purposel of forming a soot-receptacle; and in the com- "bination of such lines and chamber with a damper, forming', when closed, a partition across said chamber, and, when opened, serving'to regulate the temperature of the oven, and also'to facilitate the cleaning of" the Referring to the drawing- M" aVv is the hase of the range therein shown. f1 ,n
The space within the base, above the bottom b, I have divided, bytwo transverse partitions, c d, intol th'reevvchambers, 'e f h, whereof the end chamber-e is situated directly beneath the ash-pit i.
The middle chamber f is intended for a warming-` closet or place in which articles of food-cau be placed' Its door is' to be provided witha and kept warm. full-sized register, which, when opened, will let out thev heated air and rtransform the chamber'into a store closet, wherein articles may be ,set-away for pro.
tection.
The other end chamber his situated beneath the vertical'iines vr that are located between-theorem and' The lines n andr all open athack to .the other vertical4 ue r, up which they rise to the pipe that carries them to the chimney.
oiflce of the'chamber h is to arrest and detain vthe sootthat is mingled withvthe smoke and gases,
.the range to a suitable distance.
' vthe oven.
` and thus prevent the fines from becoming foul. That portion ofthe soot that is not deposited at the descent ot the current, but is borne with it through the ues'u, is almost certain to sink into the receptacle h when it arrives at the -'oct of the rear flue r, where the. Vcurrent begins its ascent.
The fouling of the lues is'another of thc mischiet's in the use of the ordinary range, and this the cham-- ber It almost entir-ly prevents, andI that part ot" the soot which it does not catch it affords a ready means of clearing from the lines, especially the back lines, which are very difcult of access in ranges ofthe common construction.
A damper, s, is placed at the middle ot' the charnber h, said dampeizforming a continuation of the partition t that separates the vertical fines fr.'
A handle, u, jointed to the damper s near` its lower side, extends thence through the base and -in front of By means 'ol' the handle 'a the damper may be raised, and whenthis is dbnethe current that passes down the frontline r will iloiv under the damper directly into the rear lline r, without going around through the fines' n, and Vwill consequently'- coinmnnicate much less of its` heat to By means of the damper s, therefore, the heatoi' the oven may be regulated at plea-sure.
' A similar effect is produced by opening the door of the chamber 71and thus admit-ting external air. The damper S has also to be raised" when thevchamber h and dues are cleared ot' soot.
'What I claimns new, and desire to secure by Lctters Patent, is
1. The combination of the .lues r with the chamber 7l, located beneath the fines in the base oi the range,
furthe purpose ot forming a .sootfrece Hable, as set vforth.
2. The combination of the lines r, chamber h, and damper s, for the purpose ot' regulating the temperature ofthe oven, as explained. v
