Letters Patent No. 111,826, dated February 14, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT lN CORN-PLANTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the laine.
To all who-m it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR EDWARDS, of Cuba, in the county of Crawford and inthe State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planter; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon maka part of this specification.
Ihe nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a Corn -Ilanterf as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention apperta-ins to make and use the same,
I will now proceed to describe its construction and op eration, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Figure 2, a side elevation of my machine.
Figure 3 is an enlarged front view of the oscillatingV post, by means of which the slide in thc corn-box is operated.
A represents the frame of my machine.
B is the axle passing through suitable j ournal-boxes in said frame, and upon each end thereof is placed a driving-wheel, C.
These wheels C C are provided with clutch-hubs, a a, constructed in the usual manner, so as to revolve the axle when the machine moves forward, but when moving backward the wheels will turn on the axle.
Along and on the rear edge of the frameA is placed the corn-box D, provided' with the cut-oifs l) b. Under this box moves the slide d to carry the corn from the box to the conductors E.
The slide l is operated by means of two levers, G
i G, pivoted in the frame A, as shown in fig. l. The
front end of eachl of these levers is, by an arm, H, connected with an oscillating post or standard I, said arms being pivoted to the ends of the levers, and also to the post or standard, in a slot formed for that purpose in its upper end.
The post I is pivoted on the inner end of a plate or har, Ji', which passes through the front side of the frame A in the center.
The post is, at its lower end, provided with two arms, e e, as shown' in fig. 3, and on the axle B are two other arms, j" f, extending in opposite directions.`
Then the axle revolves, the arms f f alternately strike the arms e c on the post I and give to it a rocking or oscillating motion, whereby the slide d is made to move endwise to carry the corn from the box D to the conductors E.
In a hole in the front end of the plate or bar J is inserted a lever, K, which is pivoted in an angular standard, L, rising from the frame A, by which means the said bar with the post I may be moved slightly forward to bring the arms c e out of reach of the axlearms ff, and thus stop the motion of the slide d whenever desired.
On the under side of the front part of the frame A are pivoted plow-beams M M, to the rear ends of which are pivoted the plows N N, said plows being braced by the pivoted braces k, as shown in fig. 2.
On each of the beams M is placed a weight, O, to force and hold the plow in the ground. The corn from the box D is deposited through the conductors E and flexible hose connecting with Vthe plows, through the plows into the ground.
The plows N N are, by chains mm, connected with a shaft, P, attached to bars, p p, pivoted on the sides of the corn-box D, and said shaft is, by chains n at, connected Vwith a lever, R, pivoted in a standard, t, at the rear of the box. By this means the plows may be raised ont of the ground when necessary, and held up by the lever It, catching on the hooked post S attached try the frame at the side of the drivers seat T.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the oscillating post I, arms H H, levers Gr G, arms e e, and the arms f j', all constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
