LEAF-TURNING DEVICE.

To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN REBEL, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leaf-Turning Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in leaf turning devices, and the improvement comprises the construction and arrangement of parts substantially as herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple mechanism for successively turning any number of sheets of leaf music, either forward or back by a knee action of the person playing a piano or other instrument.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a piano'showing my invention in operative position thereon. Fig. 2 is a cross section vertically through the center of the device without the actuating connections. Fig. 3 is a plan and sectional view of the operating gearing and leaf-engaging wires. Fig. i: is a front view, partly in section, of the main part of the device, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the segmental gear and ratchet wheel.
The frame of the device consists of an inclined rack or rest 2 for the sheet music, a vertical channel 3 being provided centrally from top to bottom of the rack to receive and hold the folded or bound edge of the sheets. The bottom edge of the sheets may rest on the front projecting ledges 4.- of the frame, and each sheet is adapted to be engaged and turned by wire forks 5 which project upwardly at an angle from the rotatable sector gears 6 and 7 within the base and front part of the frame. Only two forks and sector gears are shown but more would be employed if the sheet music comprised more than two inside sheets as each sheet .of the music requires independent turning. Said sector gears aremounted to rotate independently on a short shaft 8 which is alined with the center channel 3 of the frame at approximately the turning axis of the sheets, and the wire forks extend diagonally across the face of the sheets and support the same in their turning movement. In placing the leaf music on the rack each sheet is inserted within the upper open end of the fork corresponding thereto, and the Specification of Letters Patent.

first sheet to be turned from right to left would therefore be dependent upon the movement of the upper sector gear 6 and its forks whereas the next sheet would be operated by the lower sector gear 7 The means for rotating gears 6 and 7 successively, comprise a ratchet wheel 8 and quadrant gears 9 and 10 all fixed together for oint rotation. Quadrant gears 9 and 10 are in stepped or staggered relations to mesh with and rotate sector gears 6 and 7, successively. In turning the sheets from the right side to the left side of the rack, ratchet wheel 8 is rotated in one direction by an oscillating lever 11 and a pawl 12 to which an operating cord 13 is attached. This cord is secured to the end of an arm 14.- on a rotatable shaft 15, and this shaft is placed at the bottom of the key board of a piano and has a lever or handle 16 at its end adapted to be engaged by one knee of the person playing the piano. A second lever 17 and pawl 18 on the opposite side of the axis of ratchet wheel 8 serves to rotate said wheel in an opposite direction to that given by lever 11, and this mechanism is operated when each sheet is to be turned successively from the left side to the right side of the rack. This operation is effected by a cord 19 extending from lever 17 to an arm 20 on a second shaft 21 at the bottom of the key board and which shaft is provided with a lever 29, adapted to also be engaged by the knee. but the left knee in this instance. Springs 23 and 24- return the levers 11 and 17 to a starting position after each operation, and stops 25 limit the movement of the levers.
What I claim is:
1. A piano and a turning device for sheet music mounted thereon com rising a rectangular frame. a set of independent sector gears centrallv at the front and bott m of said frame. forks rojecting from said sector gears diagonally across the face of said frame to hold the sheets and gear mechanism to rotate said sector gears successively. in combination with a pair of horizontally disposed rotatable shafts having operating connections with said mechanism and provided with depending actuating levers at their front exposed ends adapted to be engaged by the knees of the player.
2. A turning device for sheet music comprising a frame adapted to hold the music having a central channel to rest the bound edge of the sheet music therein and provided with a set of sector gears and separate forks therewith extending at an angle therefrom and holding the sheet music diagonally across the face thereof, in combination with a circular ratchet. wheel and segmental gearing adapted to rotate said sector gears successively.
3. A turning device for sheet music comprising a rack having separate sector shaped members rotatably mounted at the front and bottom thereof in substantial alinement with the middle of said rack, forks extending from said members diagonally across the face of JOHN REBEL.
