ELECTROMAGNETIC CONTROL DEVICE FOR EXI'IS OF SAND-BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
Application filed March 16, 1914. Serial No. 825,098.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE ORBIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electromagnetic Control Devices for Exits of Sand- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sand boxes in which the exit end of the box is controlled by the movement of the core of a solenoid which is actuated as the electromagnet is energized.
My invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
1 illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a central vertical sectional view through a magnetic sand box having features of my invention and Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter,'A designates a sand box mounted upon a suitable support C in which the exit duct C is formed. An electromagnet D is provided with a reciprocating core E which, as the magnet is energized,
is adapted to be given a longitudinal movement. A slide F is fastened to the outer end of said core and is movable within a slot formed in the standard which supports the sand box and which moves transversely across the exit duct which is adapted to control the same.
The operation of the form of my invention as disclosed in Fig. 1 will be readily understood and is as follows: When it is desired to allow sand to be dispensed from the box, the current is sent through a coil of the electromagnet, causing a longitudinal movement to be imparted to the core and which has connected to its end the slide which regulates the exit duct or passageway leading from the box, thus allowing sand to be dispensed from the box.
\Vhat I claim to be new is:
A sand box apparatus comprising a hollow support having laterally extending flanges at its upper end, said support being hollow and flaring near its upper end with a channel formed in the upper surface of one of its flanges and leading into said flaring portion, the flaring part of the support extending below the flanges, a hopper having a contracted exit end, the marginal wall of which exit end overhangs the upper flaring part of the support and provided with flanges which engage the flanges upon the support, a solenoid having a sprang-pressed core terminating in a slide, movable through said channel and having its opposite edges and end beveled and conforming to and adapted to engage the flaring wall of the support, the upper surface of said slide adapted to contact with the under surface of one of the flanges at the bottom of the hopper and the under surface of the wall of the hopper which overhangs the flaring part.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE ORBIN.
