sp'ification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1914.
Application flleil June 18, 19. Serial No. 845,928.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL GADGON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at South Heights, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot Mill-Rolls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hot mill rolls, and has for its object to provide a roll of such class, with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for controlling the passage of air througlrthe roll thereby regulating the temperature of the roll.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a hot mill roll with means for controlling the temperature thereof, said means being simple in its construction and arrange ment, durable, eflicient and convenient in its use, readily set up with respect to the roll and inexpensive.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several viewsz-Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a hot mill roll in accordance with this invention, showing theadaptation therewith of a means for regulating the temperature thereof, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional'view of a modified form, Fig. 3 is a section on line X-X Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 4 is a section on line Y-Y Fig.2 looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 5 is an elevation broken away, of one of the regulating members, and Fig. 6 is an end view of a regulating member.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, 7 denotes the body of the roll and projecting from each end thereof isa shank 8. Extending longitudinally of the shanks 8 and body portion 7 is anair passage havmgeach end cylindrical as at 9, its central portion gradually increasing in diameter from the center ofsaid passage outwardly as at 10 and 11 and the intermediate portions thereof as indicated at 12 and 13 gradually decreasing ing diameter are indicated at 17 and 18.
Arranged within the air passage of the roll as shown in Fig. 1, as well as in the air passage, the roll as shown in Fig. 2, is a pair of oppositely disposed regulating members each consisting of an elongated shank 18, a handle 19 and a head 20. The said members are shiftable longitudinally with respect to the air passage and heads 20 are positioned to increase or decrease the amount of air passing through the passage. If the roll is very hot, the members are shifted to a position wherebyan increased quantity of air can pass through the passage, under such conditions cooling the roll. If the roll Is not very hot, the heads are positioned to decrease the quantity of air passing through the passage.
\Vhat I claim is 1. The combination with a mill roll. pro-.
vided with a. longitudinally extending passage having portions thereof of less diameter than the remaining portions, of a pair of oppositely disposed regulating members shiftably mounted within said passage and each provided with a head at its inner end.
2. The combination with a mill roll provided with a longitudinally extending passage having portions thereof of less diameter than the remaining portions, 'of a pair of oppositely disposed regulating members shiftably mounted within said passage and each provided with a head at its inner end, said members projecting from said roll and provided with handles at their outer ends.
3. The combination with a mill roll provided with a longitudinal passage opening at each end of the roll and having portions of gradually increasin diameter, of a pair of oppositely dispose shiftable members arranged within said passage and capable of controlling the circulation of air therethrough, the inner endof each of said mem- 10 at each end of the roll and having ortions through. V bers provided with a cylindrical head.
