Be it known that I, lViLLIAM I. Mannnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of FValton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarms, of which. the following is a specification, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in burglar alarms and more particularly to springactuated alarm, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a burglar alarm adapted for application to a window or door casing to be actuated upon the opening movement of the window or door and thus notify the occupants of the building of the entrance of unauthorized persons. 1
Another object ofthe present invention is the provision of a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of eiliciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, simple l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more iiarticularly pointed out in the specification and claims. a
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure l is an elevation of an alarm constructed in accordance ,with my invention, parts thereof being broken away. Fig. is a top plan view of the locking member, illustrating the same in its effective position. Fig. 3 is a sideelevation of the locking member; and Fig. l isa detail perspective view of the keeper applied to the window to retain the engaging block in its effective position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a window casing and 2 the slidable sash therein. The sash 2 is provided with a catch member 3 which is adapted to engage with a shoulder l formed in the window casing and prevent the window frame from being raised beyond a certain extent.

The main body ofthe alarm includes the clock-work mechanism which is indi cated by the numeral 7 and which may be of placed in position.

This plate is actuated by means of a rod 15 on the outer end of which is secured a thumb piece 16 adapted to be bracedby the forefinger or thumb to reciprocate the same and engage the lug 18 with the gear ll. It will be noted thatthe lug 18 normally engages the gear 1 1 so that upon the upward movement of the window sash 2, the same will be disengaged by havlng the block 1'? engaged with the inner end of the plate 10, forcing the same longitudinally within the body 5 and disengaging the lug 13 from the gear 14: t0
permit the bell 18 to ring. It will be noted j that the block 17 is provided upon one side with a cam surface 19 adapted to be engaged by the rounded outer end of the plate 10, so that the plate may be readily reciprocated. The block 17 is secured to a movable plate 520, the lower end of whichis pivoted, as shown at 21 to the sash 2, while the other end thereof is bent upwardly to form. a fingerpiece 22 and said plate is arranged between the lugs 23 at a point adjacent the outer end thereof, said lugs being formed upon the opposite ends of a plate 2i.
From the above description taken in onnection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent thatl have provided a simple and durable burglar alarm whereby should an attempt be made to enter a dwelling or other building by raising the sash 2, the occupants of the building will be notified in viewof the fact that the cam surface 19 of the block 17 willengage the outer rounded end of the plate 10 and force the same longitudinally, so as to disengage the lug 13 from the gear 1 2 and allow the bell to ring. It will also be apparent that my device is extremely simple in construction and can be readily placed upon doors, windows or any other suitable place, whereby entrance may be gained to the buildin The device,

In the operation of my improved alarm, it will be noted that when the window is raised, the catch member 3 will slide upwardly until it engages .the shoulder 4, thus further upward movement of the window will throw the same toward the right hand side of the frame, so as to positively engage the block 17 with the inner end of the elongated plate 1-0 and force the same laterally with respect to the window, in order to disengage the lug 13 from the gear 14. From this it will be apparent that when an attempt is ,made to raise the window by an outside person, the engagement of the catch member 3 with the shoulder 4 will positively engage the block 7 with the plate 10, thus unlocking the gear and permitting the bell to ring. It .will also be apparent that when the device is not in use, the block 7 will be swung outwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that the'window may be raised or lowered, without interfering with the alarm.
Vhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the-class described including in combination with a window casing and sash, of a bell mounted on the casing, mechanism for actuatingsaid bell, locking means adapted to normally engage the actuating mechanism, a cam member carried by the window sash and adapted to engage said locking means to release the actuating mechan sm, and means carried by the window sash for engagement with the casing, whereby to positively force the cam into engagement with thelocking mechanism, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the class described including a window casing and sash, a bell carried by the casing, actuating meehanlsm for said bell, a sliding plate adapted for engagement with portions of the actuating mechanism to retain the same against movement, a pivoted plate carried by the. window sash, spaced lugs adapted to be arranged upon opposite sides of one end of the plate to retain the same in its effective position, a cam member carried bysaid plate adapted to engage the inner end of the locking plate upon theupward movement of the sash to release the actuating mechanism, .andmeans carried by the sash adapted for engagement with the" casing, whereby to positively engage the cam with the locking plate.
3. A device of the class described including a window casing and sliding sash, a bell carried by Y the casing, actuating mechanism for said bell, a sliding plate adapted for engagement with a portion of the actuating mechanism to retain the same against movement, a pivoted plate carried by the sash, a cam member carried by the plate adapted to engage the inner end of the sliding plate upon n ward movement of the sash to move said p ate in one direction and release the actuating mechanism, a pivoted catch member car-' ried by the sash, a shoulder formed on the casing and adapted to be engaged by the catch whereby to positively engage the cam member with the inner end of the locking plate, as and for the purpose set forth.
