The principal objects f. my invention are, to provide an imprg ed spark-timing device for magneto gene atom or ignition magnetos, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth; to provide improved mechanism for operating and controlling the sparktiming devices of magneto generators or ignition magnetos, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth; to provide improved means for eliminating the usual intermittent jerk of the arlflature in such .magnetos, caused by the intermittent uneven magnetic pull on the armature at certain parts of each revolution, and at the same time permitting an adjustable connection between the armature and the driving shaft or mechanism; to-provide improved means for driving the armature ,of the magneto and atthe same time permitting of angular adjustment of the armature relatively to the driving shaft while the magneto is running; to provide an improved ball-bearing connection for giving the armature of the magneto an angular adjustment relatively to the driving shaft while the magneto is running, thereby eliminating unnecessary friction in the device during such adjustment and also during the ordinary running of the magneto; to provide improved means for preventing the armature from working back to'retarded position during the running of the magneto; and to provide other improvements in such apparatus as will be hereinafter more ,fully set forth.

At this stage of the art it is well known that the interruptionof the inductive cira magneto mustbe advanced for high speeds of the engine, and retarded for low speeds of the engine, to get the best efliciency; One method commonly used for advancing and'retarding such interruptions,
is to shift the interrupter on the frame of the magneto, but as this method causes the interruption to take place at various positions of the armature relatively to the field, and consequently at various points on the voltage and current waves of the magneto, it is very objectionable, because in this case the magneto generally gives the spark on a low or inelficient part of the current wave.
Thus when the engine is running at low speed and the interruption is retarded, the spark is very weak, and sometimes insuflicient, especially in starting the engine on the magneto. V
In my present invention I entirelg do away with the objectionable features ove mentioned, by always interrupting the inductive circuit at a point where the maxi mum spark is produced, that is, at the highest peak of the current wave or curve, regardless of whether the interruption is advanced or retarded, and at all speeds of the engine. Thus with my arrangement the engine can be readily started on the magneto, at full retard, and run much more efliciently when started.
In my improved apparatus for accomplishing this result, one part of the interrupter ispreferably secured rigidly to the frame of the magneto, and the other part to the armature, in such positions as to always break the inductive circuit of the mag neto at the point where the maximum spark is produced, regardless of all other conditions. For advancing and retarding the interruptions, I provide a device adapted to shift the armature shaft angularly, that is, forwardly and backwardly, relatively to the engine shaft or driving shaft, either while the apparatus is running or while it is stationary, but in particular for doing this efiiciently while the apparatus is running. This device comprises a collar member operable longitudinally along the driving shaft and spirally along the armature shaft, a sleeve member operable purelylongitudinally within a housing for the apparatus and having a ball-bearing connection with the said collar member, and a ring operable purely transversely around the housing and having diagonally-set lugs thereon operating in diagonally-formed slots- 'to the armature shaft 4 miaseo and the driving shaft for eliminating the usual continual jerk or vibration on the apparatus, and for preventing the armature and the apparatus associated therewith from constantly working 1 toward retarded position as is usually the case.
I will now describe my invention more in detail as follows: Referring to the draw 'ings illustrating the preferred form of my invention, 1 is the driving shaft which is connected with the'engine, this shaft member having longitudinallydisposed slots 2 2 therein and a cup-shaped portion 3 formed thereon. Y
4 is the spirally-formed armature shaft, which is preferably connected with-the magneto armature 5 asshown. The shafts 1 and 4: preferably run in ball bearings as shown in Fig. 1. a
6 is a collar member having longitudinally-disposed arms 7 7 thereon working in the slots 2 2 of the driving shaft memher, and a spirally-formed hole 8 therethrough by, means of which'the collar memher 6 works spirally on .the spirally-formed portion" 4 of the armature shaft. From these parts it will be readily seen that if the collar member 6 be given alongitudinal movement it will shift the armature shaft i angularly relatively to the driving shaft 1, thereby advancing or retarding the spark of the magneto relatively to the engine in' a manner well understood. The means '1 preferably employ for moving the collar member 6 longitudinally to advance-or retard the spa'rk, comprises a sleeve memher 9 keyed ,within a housing 10 by a longitudinally-disposed key 11 carried by the housing 10, so that the sleeve member 9 has a purely longitudinal movement within the housing 10, and-a ring 12 encircling the housing '10 and working between annular flanges 1313 thereon-whereby" the ring 12 is limited to a purely transverse movement on the housing 10, the ring 12 carrying diagona1ly-set lugs 1414 working in diagonallyformed slots 15 15 in thesleeve member 9 to impart the longitudinal movement to the latterwhen the ring 12 is turned on the housing 10. The sleeve member 9 is connected with. the collar'member 6 by means of a ball-bearing connection 16 whereby the members 9 and 6 are movable longitudinally together and whereby the collar member 6 is rotatable within the sleeve member 9 and relatively thereto. Any suitable mechanism,
such as a lever, may be attached to the arm- 17 of the ring the housing 10.

armature '5 to revolve evenly with the driving shaft 1, thus overcoming the uneven magnetic jerk on the armature and yet permitting the armature to adjust itself angularly relatively to the driving shaft when the spark-timing mechanism is operated, by v the arms. 19 19 slipping in the cup-shaped portion 3. This clutch provides against the usual intermittent jerk on the spark-timing apparatus where an sort of an adjustable connection is provi ed between the armature, shaft and the driving shaft, and also provides against the creepmg of the armature to retarded position where such appa-, =ratus is used, bot intermittent uneven magnetic pull on the of which are due to the armature during each revolution of its operation. The spring-arms 1919 normally stand outside of the circle 30 but are adapted to be sprung inwardly to conform to the he clutch preferably has a curved spring member 31 extending throughout the lengths of the arms 19 19 and the connecting portion 32 and secured between metal parts preferably as shownin- Fig. 11, the arms 19- 19 being slightly separated from the portion 32 at 33 33 to permit the spring 31 to have the proper action on the arms 19 19. When the apparatus is assembled as shown in Fig. 1, the arms 19 19- of the clutch are squeezed together to conform to the circle' 30 and then the clutch -as a whole is slipped into the .cup-shaped cylindrical portlon 3 on the shaft member 1, the arms 19 19 when released springing out against the inner surface of the portion 3 so as to act-as. a friction clutch on same.
The arms 19 19 of the clutch spring out against the portion 3 with enough force to overcome the usual intermittent jerk on the armature hereinbefore mentioned, and thereby cause the armature to run smoothly with the engine, thus eliminating the objectionable vibration on the apparatus. This grip between the clutch 26 and the portion 3 is also forcible enough to keep the armature from gradually working to retarded position as hereinbefore mentioned, but it is not strong enough to prevent the clutch 26 from slipping in the portion 3 when the lever 17 is operated to advance or retard the spark, which slipping takes place during such operation. The back ma etic pull on the armature tending to. work it and the timing device and levers connected therewith to retarded position, is thus prevented from doing so by the action of the clutch 26. The clutch also helps to drive the armature 5 from the driving shaft 1, and in so doing prevents excessive wear on the three-fingered collar portion 6. These features of the device of this invention, provided by the clutch'26, greatly increase the efiiciency and serviceability of such devices and apparatus.
As the arm 17 works up and down in a plane at right-angles to the armature shaft, the device is Well adapted to be connected with the ordinary spark-timing levers on automobiles.
I wish it to be understood that I may adapt my invention for various types of magnetos, and also that I may vary the construction of the various parts to suit the requirements.
I do .not wish to limit this invention to all of the particular details herein set forth, as various modifications thereof may be made or utilized without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What'I claim as my invention is:
1. In a spark-timing device ofthe character set forth, a driving shaft, a spirallyformed armature shaft, a connecting member for the two shafts operable longitudinally along the driving shaft and spirally along the armature shaft whereby a longi-" tudinal movement of the said connecting member turns the armature shaft relatively to the driving shaft, a sleeve member for operating the said connecting member longitudinally, a ball-bearing connection between the said sleeve member and the said connecting member whereby the latter may be operated longitudinally while revolving, a housing for the apparatus, the said housing carrying a longitudinally disposed key working in a longitudinally-formed slot in the said sleeve member whereby the latter is limited to a longitudinal movement only in the said housing, a transversely-disposed ring encircling the said housing and turnable thereon between transversely-disposed flanges on the said housing whereby the said ring is limited to a transverse movement only, the said ring having diagonally-set lugs thereon working. in diagonally-formed slots in the said sleeve member whereby 1 turning the said ring on the said housing operates the said sleeve member longitudinally within the said housing, and a friction clutch acting between the said shafts to cause them to revolve evenly together but 15 permitting of a relative turning of the said shafts when the spark-timing mechanism is operated.
- 2. In a spark-timing device of the character set forth, a driving shaft, a spirallyformed armature shaft, a connecting member forthe two shafts operable longitudinally along the driving shaft and spirally along the armature shaft whereby a l0ngitudinal movement of the said connecting member turns the armature shaft relatively to the driving shaft, a sleeve member for ogerating the said connecting member long udinally, a ball-bearing connection between the said sleeve member and the said connecting member whereby the latter may be operated longitudinally while revolving,
a housing-for the apparatus, the said housing carrying a longitudinally dlsposed key working in a longitudinally-formed slot in the said sleeve member whereby the latter is limited toa longitudinal movement only in the said housing,.and a transversely-disposed ring encircling the said housing and in the said housing, and a transversely-disposed fianges on the said housing whereby the said ring is limited to a transverse movement only, the said ring having diagonallyset lugs thereon working in diagonallyformed slots in the said sleeve member whereby turning the said ring on the said housing operates the said sleeve member longitudinally within the said housing;
3. In a spark-timing device of the character set forth, a driving shaft and a driven shaft, one of which is spirally formed, a connecting member for the two shafts operable longitudinally along one and spirally along the other to produce a relative turning thereof, a sleeve member to which the said connecting member is revolubly connected, a housing for the apparatus within which the said sleeve member is keyed so as to be limited to a longitudinal movement only, a transversely-disposed ring encircling the said housing and turnable thereon between transversely-disposed flanges whereby it is limited to a transverse movement only, the said ring having diagonallyset lugs thereon working in diagonallyformed slots in the said sleeve member to operate the latter longitudinally when the said ring is turned and thereby give the said connecting member a longitudinal movement, and a friction clutch acting between the said shafts to cause them to revolve evenly together but permitting of a relative turning thereof when the spark-timing mechanism is operated.
4. In a spark-timing device of the character set forth, a driving shaft and a driven shaft, one of which is spirally formed, a connecting member for the two shafts operable longitudinally along one and spfrally along the other to produce a relative turning thereof, a sleeve member to which the said connecting member is revolubly connected, a housing for the apparatus within which the said sleeve member is keyed so as to be limited to a longitudinal movement only, and a transversely-chsposed ring encircling the said housing and turnable thereon between transversely-disposed flanges where by it is limited to a transverse movement only, the said ring having diagonally-set lugs thereon working in diagonally-formed slots in the said sleeve member to operate the latter longitudinally when the said ringis turned and thereby give the said connectmg member a longitudinal movement.
5. In apparatus of the character set forth, a driving shaft and a driven shaft, one of which is spirally formed, connecting means for the two shafts operable longitudinally along one and spirally alongthe' other to produce a relative turning thereof, a sleeve member to which the said connecting means is revolubly connected for longitudinal movement, a housing for the apparatus within which the said sleeve member is movable longitudinally, a transversely-disposed ring carried by the said housing, and turnable relatively thereto,the said: ring'having diagonally-set lugs thereon working in diagonally-formed slots in the said sleeve member to operate same longitudinally when the said ring is turned, and a friction clutch acting betwen the said shafts to cause them to revolve evenly together.
6. In apparatus of the character set forth, a driving shaft and a driven shaft, one of which is spirally formed, connecting means for the twoshafts operable longitudinally along one and spirally along the other to produce a relative turning thereof, a sleeve member to which the said connecting means is revolubly connectedfor longitudinal movement, a. housingfor the apparatus within which the said sleeve member is movable longitudinally only, and a transversely-disposed ringcarried on the outside of the said housing and turnable transversely thereon only, the said ring having diagonally-set lugs thereon working in diagonally-formed slots in the said sleeve member to operate same longitudinally when-the said ring is turned.
7. In apparatus of-the character set forth, a driving shaft-and .a driven shaft,- one of which is spirally formed, connecting means for the two shafts operablelongitudinally along-one and-spirally along the other to produce a relative turning thereof,.a sleeve member to which-the said connecting means is revolubly connected for longitudinal movement, ahousing for the apparatus within whichthe said sleeve member is movable longitudinally only, a transversely-disposed ring carried by the said housing and'turir able transversely thereon only, the said ring having'diagonallyset lugs thereon working in diagonally-formed slots in the said sleeve member to operate same longitudinally when the saidring is turned, and a friction clutch-acting between-the said shafts to cause them to revolve evenly together.
8. In apparatus of the character set forth, a driving shaft and a driven shaft, one of which is spirally formed, connecting means for the two shafts operable longitudinally along one and spirally along the other to produce a relative turning thereof, a sleeve member to which the said connecting means is revolubly connected for longitudinal movement, a housing for the apparatus within which the said sleeve member is movable longitudinally only, and a transversely-disposed ring carried by the said housing and turnable transversely thereon only, the said ring having diagonally-set lugs thereon working in diagonally-formed slots in the said sleeve member to operate same longitudinally when the said ring is turned.
9. In apparatus of the character set forth, two revoluble mechanisms, connecting means for the said mechanisms for causing a relative turning thereof, means for operating the said connecting means comprising a housing, a sleeve operable longitudinally only in the housing, and a ring operable transversely only on the housing, the said ring and sleeve having operable connection with each other, and a friction clutch acting between the said revoluble mechanisms to cause them to revolve evenly together.
10. In apparatus of the character set forth, two revoluble mechanisms, connecting means for the said mechanisms for causing a relative turning thereof, and means for operating the said connecting means comprising. a housing, a sleeve operable longitudinally only in the housing, and a ring operable transversely only on the housing, the said ring and sleeve having operable connection with each other.
11. In apparatus of the character set forth, two revoluble mechanisms, connecting means for the said mechanisms for causing a relative turning thereof, means for operating the said connecting means comprising a housing, a sleeve operable longitudinally in the housing, and a ring operable transversely on the housing, the said ring and sleeve having operable connection with each other, and 'africtionclutoh actin'g between the saidrevoluble mechanisms to cause them to revolve 'evenly together.
12. In apparatus of the character set forth, two revoluble mechanisms, connecting means for the said mechanisms for causing a relative turning thereof, and means for operating the said connecting means comprising a housing, a sleeve operable longitudinally only in the housing, and a ring operable transversely only on the housing, the said ring and sleeve having operable connection with each other. a
13. In apparatus of the character set forth having two revoluble mechanisms and means for causing a relative turning thereof, operating means for the apparatus comprising a sleeve having longitudinal movement only, and a ring having a transverse movement only, the said ring and sleeve having operable connection with each other.
14. In apparatus of the character set forth having two revoluble mechanisms and means for causing a relative turning thereof, operating means for the apparatus comprising a member having longitudinal movement only, and another memberhaving a transverse movement only, the said members having operable connection with each other.
15. In apparatus of the character set forth, operating mechanism therefor comprising a member having longitudinal movement only, and another member having a transverse movement only, the said members being operably connected so that the operation of one causes the operation of the other.
16. In a spark-timing device for ignition magnetos, a driving shaft, an armature having a shaft connected therewith a portion of which shaft is spirally formed, a collar member having finger portions thereon adapted to slide longitudinallyinlongitudinal slots in the driving shaft member and having a spirally-formed hole therethrough ,fitting the said spirally-formed portion of the armature shaft and slidable along said spirally-formed portion whereby a longitudinal movement of the said collar portion shifts the armature shaft forwardly or backwardly relatively to the drivingashaft, a sleeve member, a ball bearing attached to the said collar member and to the said sleeve member whereby the said collar'member may be rotated relatively to the said sleeve member and whereby the said collar member and the said sleeve member are movable longi- 1 tudinally along the driving shaft together either while the said collar member and armature shaft are revolving or are stationary, a housing for the said sleeve member, an annular portion of which is movable, diagonally-set lugs on the said annular por- 10 tion of the housing and slidable in spirallyformed slots in the said sleeve member whereby the said sleeve member may be moved longitudinally in the said housing when the said annular portion is turned, thereby causing the said collar member to shift the armature shaft and the armature connected therewith forwardly or backwardly relatively to the driving shaft to advance or retard the spark of the magneto, lever mechanism attached to the said annular portion for operating same on the housing, and a crab-like friction clutch member attached rigidly to the armature shaft and having curved spring arms sprung out against the inner surface of a cup-shaped portion on the driving shaft to cause the armature to turn smoothly with the driving shaft but permitting the armature shaft to shift forwardly or backwardly relatively to the driving shaft when the spark-timing mechanism is o erated. 17. In a spar -timing device for magnetos, a driving shaft, an armature shaft a portion of which is spirally formed, a collar member having finger portions thereon adapted to slide longitudinally in longitudinal slots in the driving shaft member and having a spirally-formed hole therethrough fitting the said spirally-formed portion of the armature shaft and slidable therealong whereby a longitudinal movement of the said collarportion turns the armature shaft relatively to the driving shaft, a'sleeve member, a ball ubea'ringettached to the said collar member v and to the said sleeve member whereby the said collar member may be rotated relatively to the said sleeve member and whereby the said collar member and the said sleeve member are movable longitudinally along the said shafts together, a housing for the sa d sleeve, member,-means formoving the sald sleeve member along the-'Lsaid shafts within" gthe said housing, and a crabelike frlction clutch actin between the armature shaft and the driv ng shaft to cause the armature shaft to turn smoothly with the dIlVlIlg shaft but, permitting the armature shaft to turn'relatively to the driving shaft when th spark-timing mechanism is operated.
18. In a spark-timing device for magnetos,
a drivingshaft, a spirally-formed armature shaft, a connecting member for the two' shafts operable longitudinally along the driving shaft and spirally along the armature shaft whereby a longitudinal movement of the said connecting member turns the armature shaft relatively to the driving shaft, a sleeve member, a ball bearing connected between the said connecting member and the said sleeve member whereby these members are operable along the said shafts together and whereby the said connecting -member may be rotatedv relatively to the said sleeve member, means for moving the said sleeve member along the said shafts, and a friction clutch. acting between the said shafts with sufiici'ent' force to eliminate the usual intermittent jerk on the armature due to. the intermittent uneven magnetic pull thereon and thereby cause the armature to turnsmoothly with the driving shaft, but permitting the armature shaft to turn relatively to the driving shaft when the sparkt'ii'n'in'g mechanism is operated.
19. In a spark-timing device of the character set forth, a driving shaft, a spirallyformed armature shaft, a connecting member for the two shafts operable longitudinally soto eliminate the usual intermittent jerk 6n along the driving shaft and spirally along the armature shaft whereby a longitudinal movement thereof causes a relative turning of; the two shafts, means for operating the sa'igl connecting member along the said shafts comprising a ball bearing connection with the said cennecting member whereby the latter may be operated"alrmg"th' said shafts while revolving, and a friction clutch acting between the two shafts with sufficient for,ce

20. In a spark-timing device of the character set forth, a driving shaft and a driven shaft, connecting means for the shafts, means for operating the said connecting means along the shafts to produce a relative turning of the latter, said operating means having a ball-bearing'connection with the said connecting means whereby the latter may be operated longitudinally while revolving, and a friction clutch acting between the said shafts with sufficient force to eliminate the usual intermittent jerk on the driven shaft due to the intermittent uneven magnetic pull thereon and thereb cause the driven shaft to turn smoothly with the driving shaft, but permitting the driven shaft to turn relatively mechanism is operated.
21. In apparatus of the character set forth, ,two revoluble mechanisms, means for coupling the said mechanisms to cause them to 1v mate-together, means for operating the said portion of which is spirally formed, a collar member having finger portions thereon adapted to slide longitudinally in longitudinal slots in the driving shaft member and fitting the said spirally-formed portionof the armature shaft and slidable tlrerealong whereby a longitudinal movement of the said collar portion turns the armature shaft relatively to the driving shaft, aball-beaY- ing connection with the said collar member whereby it may be rotated and at the same time moved along the said shafts, and a friction clutch acting between the said shafts with sufficient force to eliminate the usual intermittent jerk on the armature shaft due to the intermittent uneven magnetic pull thereon and thereby cause the armature shaft to turn smoothly with the driving shaft but permitting the armature shaft to turn relatively to the driving shaft whgn the spark-timing mechanism is operate armature shaft to r 23. In a spark-timing device of the to the driving shaft when the spark-timing coupling means to produce a relative turning tos, a driving shaft, an armature shaft a having a spirally-formed hole therethrough spirally alon the other for producing a relative turning of the shafts, the said means comprising a ball-bearing connection with the said connecting mechanism whereby the latter may be operated along jhe said shafts while revolving, and a fricti n clutch acting between the two shafts wit sufficient force to eliminatethe usual intermittent jerk on the driven shaft due to the intermittent uneven magnetic pull thereon and thereby cause the driven shaft to turn smoothly with the driving shaft, but permitting the driven shaft to turn relatively to the driving shaft whein the spark-timing mechanism is operate 24. In a spark-timing device for mag netos, a driving shaft, a spirally-formed armature shaft, a connecting member for the two shafts operable longitudinally along the driving shaft and spirall along the armature shaft whereby a longltudinal movement of the said connecting member turns the armature shaft relatively ,to the driving shaft, a ball-bearing connectionwith the said connecting member whereby it may be ong rotated and at the same time moved a the said shafts, and a friction clutch acting between the said shafts with sufficient force to eliminate the usual intermittent jerk on the armature shaft due to the intermittent uneven magnetic pull thereon and thereby cause the armature shaft to turn smoothly with the driving shaft, butpermitting the armature shaft to turn relatively to the driving shaft when the spark-timing mechanism is operated.
25. In a spark-timing device of the character set forth, a driving shaft, a spirally-formed armature shaft, a connecting member for the two shafts operable longitudinally along the driving shaft and spirally along the armature shaft whereby a longitudinal movement thereof causes a relative turning of the two shafts, means for operating the said connecting member along the said shafts, andh friction clutch acting between the said shafts with suflicient force to eliminate'the usual intermittent jerk on the armature shaft due to the intermittent uneven magnetic pull thereon and thereby cause the armature shaft to turn smoothly with the driving shaft, but permitting the armature shaft to turn relatively, to the driving shaft when the spark-timing mechanism is operated. i 26. In a spark-timing device of the ch-aracter set forth, a. driving shaft and aspirally-formed driven shaft, connecting mechaing the said connecting mechanism longitudinally along one of the shafts and spirally *along the other for produclng a relative turning of the shafts, and a friction clutch acting between the two shaftswith sufficient force to eliminate any ordinary jerking movement therebetween and thereby cause them to turn smoothly together, but
permitting the driven shaft to turn relatively to the driving shaft when the sparktiming mechanism is operated.
' 27 In a spark-timing device of the character set forth,a,driving shaft and a driven shaft, connecting means for the shafts, means for operating the said connecting means along the shafts to produce arelatlve turning of the latter, and a friction clutch acting between the two shafts with sufficient force to eliminate any ordinary jerking movement therebetween and thereby cause them to turn smoothly together, but permitting the driven shaft to'turn relatively to the driving shaft when the spark-timing mechanism is operated.
28. In apparatus of the character set forth, two revoluble mechanisms, means for coupling the said mechanisms to cause them to rotate together, means for operating the ,said coupling means to produce a relative turning of the said mechanisms, and a friction clutch acting between the said mechanisms with suflicient force to eliminate any ordinary jerking movement therebetween and thereby cause them to revolve smoothly together, but permitting one of the said revoluble mechanisms to turn relatively 'to the other upon the application of a greater force.
29.- In a spark-timing device comprising two revoluble mechanisms, connecting means therefor for producing a relative turning of the said. mechanisms, means foroperating the said connecting means to produce the said relative turning, and a friction clutch acting between the said mechanisms with sufficient force to eliminate any ordinary jerking movementtherebetween and thereby cause them to revolve smoothly together, but permitting one of the said revoluble mechanisms to turn relatively the application of a greater force.
