Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1914.
Application filed .Tune 11, 1913. Serial N o. 773,102.
To all vwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. HARRING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sebastopol, in the county of Sonoma, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to signals and particularly to a type adapted for signaling in a fog from vessels on the high seas.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a signalv of the type named which can be made to intermittently emit flashes of great intensity.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the detail of con. struction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the 4accompanying drawings wherein like characters of. reference denote corresponding parts in the sev-/ eral views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the mast of a vessel showing the improved signal applied; Fig. 2, a vertical section of what is shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on4 the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 1, a plan view of what is shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings 10 indicates the mast or any other suitable polemounted aboard a vessel. pole 10 longitudinally of the lat-ter` is a casing 1-1 the lower end of which communicates with a hopper 12 suitably mounted von'the casing. The upper end ofthe casing 11 is provided with an opening 13 which communicates with an inclined passage 14:A formed in the mast or pole 10. Mounted within the casing 11 is an endless conveyer 15 provided with a plurality of cups. 16 and operated 4through the medium of a crank handle 17. Mounted upon the mast or pole 10 are spaced metallic contact members 18 and 19 the upper ends of which are positioned to receive material delivered through the passage 14 therebetween. These contact Secured to this mast or members 18 and 19 are connected by wires 20 and 21 with a suitable electric source E.
In the operation of the signal a supply of fusible balls 22 are deposited in the hopper 12. and the conveyerl operated. During thls operation of the conveyer 15 the ball 22 will be deposited in the cups 16 and ele-V vated. As the cups pass the opening 13 the balls carried thereby will be successively discharged into the passage 14. From this passage 14 the balls 22 will pass between the contact members 18 and 19 and close the electric circuit generated by the source E. Assoon as this circuit is closed the ball between the contact members 18 and 19 will be fused'and a flash of great intensity will result which can be seen for a considerable distance in a fog. The rapidity of these flashes can of course beregulated by the rapidity by which the conveyer 15 is operated and signaling may be continued as' long as a supply of fusible balls ismaintained in the hopper 22. y
What I claim is 1. In a signaling device, the combination of a support, an electric circuit, spaced terminal/contacts included in said circuit and mounted on said support, the Afree ends of sald terminal contacts being flared, and
means for intermittently delivering loose' fusible elements between the free ends of said'contacts whereby the4 circuit is intermittently closed and the fusible elements successively consumed.
2. Ina signaling device, the combination of an upright having an inclined assage in its upper end, a supply of loose 'fiisible elements, means for transferring the elements singly from the supply and delivering same into said passage, an electriccircuit, spaced terminal contacts included in said circuit and mounted on said uprights in position to receive the fusible elements successively therebetween from said passage whereby the circuit-is intermittently closed and the fusible element successively consumed.
In testimony whereof, I' aix my signa'- ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
'FRANK w. HAEEINGTON.
