TRAFFIC-RECORDER.
To all whom it may concern a citizen of the United States, residing at Oxford, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Traffic-Recorders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to traflic recorders of the class adapted to the use of interurban cars or for other suitable purposes, and the objects of my improvements are to provide means for recording the passenger mileage; to provide means for recording the different kinds and number of'fares collected; to provide means for selecting and differently arranging a series .of type wheels with the characters thereon in alinement; to provide meansfor printing a record from the characters as differently assembled in alinement;
I to provide means for shifting-the hammers to different positions on the printing line; to provide means for automatically reversing the direction of travel of the ink ribbon; to provide means for removably securing intel-changeable printing characters to the face of the type wheels; to provide means for intermittently feeding the paper with spaces of different predetermined widths; to provide means for preventing the simultaneous movement rotatively and longitudinally of a clutch member; to provide means for automatically locking the recording mechanism out of action by the removal of a key; to provide electrical connections for actuating different elements in successive order and to provide simple and durable construction and assemblage of the various members for securing facility of operation and efficiency of action. These objects are attained in the following described manner as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the operating shaft of a traffic recorder embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line aa of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a transverse section in the direction of the arrow and on the line bb of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a plan with parts broken away; Fig. 5, an elevation of the front wall with connected parts; Fig. 6 an elevation with parts broken away of .the dial and of the finger locking wheels; Fig. 7, an'inverted plan of the type wheels and bars in diagram showing the printing line; Fig. 8 ortions of a record of the different kinds of are and Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawings, 1 represents the base of a traffic recorder embodying my improvements, 2 and 3 the front and rear end walls thereof and 4 the operating shaft mounted in-said walls and adjustable both rotatively and longitudinally. A series of stationary type bars 5 secured on a stay rod 6 terminate below shaft 4 and form a printing line parallel thereto. Said bars are formed with printing characters on their terminal for ruling and designating thepurpose of the successive columns on the record as shown in Fig. 8. A
A destination wheel 7 is splined on the operating shaft and the departure wheel 8 and the mileage and fare Wheel 9 are idly mounted on said shaftand yieldingly maintained in rotative adjustment by means of the resilient stops 11. Clamping collars 12 adjustably threaded in the end of wheels 7 and 8 serve to removably secure on the faces thereof interchangeable rings 13 formed in r the road, the total number shown in the drawings being thirty-two miles. The type numbers in columns 15 and 16 represent respectively the .amount of local and of limited fare for the corresponding numberof miles in columns 14, and in corresponding directions as shown in Fig. 7.
Clutch members 17 and 18 secured on shaft 4 are adapted to alternately engage with and turn wheels 8 and 9. Said member 17 may be engaged with wheel 8 only when in registration with the single transverse hole 19 therein. Said member 18, however, may be engaged with wheel 9 when in registration with any one of the transverse holes 21 formed therein in ra-- dial registration with the numbered graduation of miles in columns 14 on the face of said wheel.
A disk 22 formed with a transverse hole 23 and with a series of peripheral notches 24 adapted to frictionally engage with the resilient stop 25 is journaled concentric with shaft 4 in the stationary bracket 26 by means of the sleeve 27. A similar thin disk 28 secured on shaft 4 is provided with a pin or clutch member 29 adapted to removably engage with hole 23 in disk 22 and formed with a series of peripheral notches 31 adapted to slidably engage with the fixed lug 32 which depends from bracket 26 for.

During the engagement of pin 29 with hole 23 the disk 22 and 28 are maintained with the peripheral notches on one disk in alinement with the corresponding notches on the other disk and also with the mile distance graduations in columns 14 on the type wheel 9. A dial 38 is formed with a radial slot '34 to receive shaft 4 and with staples 35 adapted to detachably engage with stationary bracket books 36 whereon it may be removably supported in a predetermined position concentric with said shaft. Consecutively numbered graduation's on the margin of said dial indicate mile distances from the initial station A. The stations are indicated on said .dial in the same order and corresponding in distance with the stations indicated in like i manner on the face of the type wheels 7 and 8. When the clutches 29 and 19 are engaged the departure finger 37 secured on sleeve 27 is movable in unison with disk 22, type wheel 7 and type Wheel 8 for indicating on the dial the same station on type wheel 8 which may be in the printing line with the terminals of the type bars 5. Trip recording type wheel 39 and date recording Wheels 41 and 42 idly mounted on shaft 4 have tubular connections with the respective hand wheels '43 whereby they may be independently adjusted with the desired type member thereon in registration with the printing line of the type bar terminals. The type wheel 44 having tubular connections with gear 45 may be similarly adjusted thereby for recording the conductors key number. The sector 46 of a type Wheel having printing characters P. T. C. and Hf on its face for recording different classes of fare, is idly mounted on shaft-4 and tubular-1y connected with the oscillating lever 47 whereby it may be rotatably adjusted with the desiredsaid type character in the printing line of the type bars. Said lever 47 is formed with a depending leg 40 and with a projecting wing 48 having peripheral notches 49 corresponding to the re- I spective type characters on the face of sector 46 and adapted to frictionally engage with the gravity latch 52 for yieldingly maintaining said lever in predetermined positions of adjustment. An eccentric rod 56 formed with a slot 53 adapted to slidably engage with a pin 54 on leg 40 serves to move said lever with either of the extreme notches 49 into frictional engagement .with latch 52. Said rod 56 may beactuated by an eccentric'57 which is journaled in a fixed bracket 58 and splined on the selecting rod 59 which rod may be adjusted both longitudinally and rotatively in supports not shown. The eccentric 57 is formed with a fiat surface 61 on its hub whereon the exertion of spring 62 serves to move and maintain under a yielding pressure the eccentric with the rod 59 in its normal rotative position and with the latch 52 in engagement with either of the intermediate notches 49 on wing '48. Disk segments 63 and 64 journaled in the front wall 2 are respectively provided with operating levers 65 and 66 to which pull cords 67 and 68 are secured. Springs 69 serve to move and maintain under yielding pressure said levers with the disk segments in their normal rotative position as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
Said arms may be immovably secured out of action by means of the engagement therewith of the hooks 71. Said hooks are ivotally secured to the front wall 2 and 5 connected together by means of a link 72 and with the crank arm 73 by means of a rod 74. Said crank arm is secured on a short shaft which is journaled in the front wall and which carries a projecting gravity latch 75.
A cam disk 76 secured on shaft 77 serves to move latch and its connections with hooks 71 for disengaging said hooks from the levers 65 and 66 as shown in Fig. 5. Shaft 77 is provided with a gear 81 engagement with gear 45 and .with a key disk 79 which is formed with a radial slot for the insertion therein of the conductors key 82, as shown in Fig. 12. A series of fixed stops 83 terminating successively closer to the axis of disk 79 serve as stops respectively for keys of corresponding difierent widths in the usual manner. An idle cap 80 supported on shaft 77 and formed with a radial key slot adapted to register with the slot in disk 79 serves to cover and protect said disk and key stops 83.
The movement of disk 79 by means of key 82 serves to turn shaft 7 7 with the cam disk 76 for actuating latch 75 and its connections with the hooks 71, whereby said hooks may be disengaged from the'respective levers 65 and 66 as shown in Fig. 5. The movement of disk 79 is limited by the contact of the key with the corresponding stop of series 83 and simultaneously with the adjustment of type wheel 44 thereby with the number on said wheel corresponding to the number of said key in registration with the printing line. Similar spools 84 for the ink ribbon 85 are provided wit-h ratchet wheel 86 adapted to engage with the respective pawls 87 which are hinged on the end of cores 88 of the respective similar solenoids 89 and whereby said pawls may be actuated to turn V either of the corresponding spools for winding the ribbon thereon. Springs 91 serve to maintain under a yielding prewure the pawls in contact with the ratchet wheels and fixed stops 92 serve to alternately intercept and disengage the pawls from the ratchet wheels when the corresponding core 88 is sufficiently extended from its solenoid 89 as shown in Fig. 1. Yokes 93 swiveled on stationary supports 94 may be maintained under a yielding pressure by means of springs 95 with one end in contact with the, ribbon on the spools and for contacting the other terminal thereof when the spool is empty with the corresponding pin 96 which forms the other switch terminal of the circuit to solenoid which a ctuates the ordinary rotary circuit changer or two point "switch 97, whereby the circuit is changed from the solenoid of the full spool to the solenoid of the and directed by means of guide rollers 103' directly under the ink ribbon and secured to the feed roller 104 which may be movably supported on shaft 105 journaled in the end walls. An arm 106 mounted idly on shaft 105 carries a pawl 107 adapted to engage with the ratchet wheel 108 secured on said shaft. The gravity core 109 of the solenoid 111 is formed with a gap 112 and connected with the extremity of arm 106 by means of a link 113 for actuating the feed roller 104 intermittently. A gear 114 idly mounted on a fixed stud 115 and provided with a laterally projecting pin 116 enga es with a pinion 117 secured on shaft 105 ad]acent to arm 106 thereon. The disk 110 idly mounted on said stud is formed with a peripheral gap 118 and with a slot 119 in movable engagement with pin 116. Spring 121 secured on the disk engages with said pin for maintaining the disk under a yielding pressure in rotative registration with gear 114. A lever 122 fulerumed at a fixed point is maintained with one of its ends in movable engagement with the gap 112 in the solenoid core 109 by means of the opposite end thereof being in movable contact with the periphery of disk 110, whereby the intermittent movement of said core with arm 106 and the feed roller 104 serves to space the record paper uniformly. The entrance of the corresponding end of lever 122 within the gap 118 in disk 110 disengages its opposite end from the gap 112 in core 109 and permits the full upward movement of said core with its connect-ions to feed the record paper through a wide space for convenience in separating it into sheets of uniform length after its separation from the unused portion by means of the blade 123. The descent of core 109 rengages lever 122 with the gap therein and disengages said lever from the gap 118 in the disk that the action of spring 121 may move the disk with the gap therein in a forward direction for reengaging its periphery with the end of said lever and again limiting the stroke of the solenoid core 109.

A disk 151 secured on sleeve 132 is adapted to engage with either of the notches formed in the gravity latch 152 for maintaining said sleeve with the shifting rod 135 in different positions in or out of longitudinal adjustment with the hammers 148 and 149 in respective registration with the corresponding column of the pairs of columns 14 and 15 on type wheel 9 and which correspond to the direction of the car in or out from the initial station A". A partial turn of the hand wheel with the shifting rod 135 moves said rod longitudinally in relationto sleeve 132 and effects the shifting of hammer 149 from registration with the columns 15 of local fares on type wheel 9 to the corresponding column of pairs 16 of limited fares thereon. A rearward longitudinal movement of the selecting rod 59 actuates lever 141 with sleeve 133 in a forward direction to overcome the exertion of spring 142 and temporarily shift the hammer 144 from registration with the main line stations A" x on the face of the destination wheel 7 and into registration with the branch line stations A= thereon. as shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 7 H. corresponding with the printing charac ters on the face of sector 46 are adapted to indicate respectively the number of passes tickets, cash fares and half fares recorded by the sector. A corresponding series of idle clutch members 153 journaled in stationary bearings are provided with crank pin and rod connections 154 with the respective counters. A crank sleeve 155 both rotatively and longitudinally adjustable in a fixed bearing 156 is provided with clutch members 158 adapted to alternately engage with the corresponding said idle clutch members for actuatlng the counters P. and T. A crank shaft 159 rotatively supported within said crank sleeve is provided with clutch members 162 and 163 adapted to alternately engage with the corresponding idle clutch members of the counters C. and H. A hook 164'having a wide face and hinged at a fixed point is connected by a link 165 with a crank pin formed on the clutch member 168 and is movable thereby ither in or out of the path of the fare hammer 149. Said hook is arranged to intercept and prevent said hammer from making any record'of either local or limited fares in columns 15 or 16 on the type wheel 9 during the recording of either a pass or a ticket, and to permit said hammer to make a record therefrom of the full fare when either a cash or half fare is being recorded. A spring 167 serves to simultaneously move and maintain under a yielding pressure the crank shaft 159 and also the crank sleeve 155 longitudinally in a forward direction and with the clutch members for actuating the counters T. and G. into engagement. The double wedge member 168 connected to the leg of lever 47 may be slidably engaged thereby with the front end of crank shaft 159 for moving and maintaining said shaft and crank sleeve 155 in a rearward direction with the clutch members for the counters P. and E. into engagement, as shown in Fig. 16, and with the latch 52 into simultaneous engagement with the corresponding extreme notches 49.
The disk segment 63 having bell crank and crank arm connections 174 shown in Fig. 3 with the crank sleeve 155 serves to adjust it rotatively for actuating the counters P. and T. The disk segment 64 having similar bell crank and crank arm connections 175 with the crank shaft 159 serves to adjust it rotatively for actuating the counters C. and H. and also for simultaneously moving the hook 164 from intercepting the stroke of hammer 149 as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 18. y I
A contact arm 176 pivotally secured at a fixed point and provided with a projecting pin 177 may be moved and maintained in one direction under a yielding pressure by means of a spring 178. Slotted links 179 in independent sliding engagement with -pin 177 are pivotally secured to the respective operating levers 65 and 66 whereby said nate engagement of said bosses with'a pin 185, which projects from arm 176.- An oscillating bar 185 fulcrumed at a fixed point is connected by means of a link 186 with.
lever 183 whereby it may be operated in unison therewith for alternately closing and opening the circuit through the switch ter minals 187 and 188.-
The dial and the ring segments 13 may be substituted by others with different stations indicated thereon and in proper distance relations for adapting the recorder to be used for other lines of road. The operating shaft 4 and the selecting rod 59 may be extended in either direction and the pull cords may be placed parallel therewith by means of grooved pulleys not shown for convenient access from different points in their length. The dial 33, the fingers 37 and 38, the disk 22 and the stop 32 may be located at any desired point in the length of the operating shaft 4 and arranged to face in either of opposite directions as desired. The solenoid circuit as shown in Fig. 21 enters through fuse block 189 from a source not shown. The top and sides between the end walls may be inclosed as desired.
In operation, the conductors key 82 may be inserted through the disks 79 and a partial turn thereby of the shaft 77 with the disk 76 lifts the pawl 75 with the hooks 71 out of engagement with the operating levers 65 and 66. A further turn of shaft 77 contacts the key with its corresponding stop of theseries 83 and actuates the type wheel 44 to register the key number thereon with the printing line. By means of the hand wheels 43 the respective wheels 39, 41 and 42 may be turned with the proper numbers thereon in registration with the printing line for recording the train or trip number, together with the number of the day and month. When the operating shaft 4 is in the forward position as shown in Fig. 1, it may be turned with the fingers 37 and 38 into registration with the desired departure station on the dial as B and carries with it the type wheel 7 and wheel 8 with the same departure station indicated thereon into registration with the printing line as shown in Fig.7. The operating shaft may now be shifted longitudinally in a rearward direction with disk 28 on the opposite side of stop 32 as shown in dotted lines inFig. 1, and disengaged from disk 22 which carries finger 37niThis 'rearward movement of the operating shaft also disengages clutch mem-- ber 17 from the departure wheel 8 and en gages clutch member 18 with the mileage and'fare wheel 9-. Said shaft may now'be turned-with the finger 38 into registration with. the desired destination station indicated on thedial, as D.. The type wheels 7 and 9 being simultaneously turned thereby with the same station "on wheel 7 and wit the roper number of: miles and the amount of are-on wheel 9 into registration with' the. printing line. In this manner the .de-
sired printing characters .on the face of the type wheels may be selected and assembled on the printing line and for either direction of travel of the car out or in toward the initial station. The selecting rod 59 may be rotatively'moved and temporarily maintained in either direction against the exertion of spring 62 for slidably engaging with pin 54 and thereby oscillating lever 47 with the corresponding outside notch of the series 49 on wing 48 into frictional engagement with latch 52 and also to move sector 46 with either of the corresponding type character P. or H. thereon into registration with and for completing the printing line, as'shown in Fig.7.
The movementof the oscillating lever 47 to the position shown in Fig. 3 for recording a pass moves sector 46 with the character P. thereon into registration with the printing line and also actuates the double wedge member 168 in one direction for engaging the clutch members of the counter P. The lever 65 with disk segment 63 may now be moved against the yielding exertion of the corresponding spring 69 by means of the pull cord 67 for actuating said counter P. by means of the connections of said disk segment therewith. The contact arm 176 is simultaneously moved against the yielding exertion of spring 178 by means of the slotted link connection 179 of lever 65 therewith to the terminal 182 for closing the circuit to solenoid 128. The inward movement of the core of said solenoid actuates all the printing hammers simultaneously to strike the record paper with the ink ribbon against the characters in the printing line for making a record thereof. as shown in the bottom line of Fig. 8
The engagement of pin 185 on the contact mm 176 with lug 184 on lever 183 throws the bar 185 to shift the circuit to the terminal 181 from terminal 1.82. The release of cord 67 permits spring 178 to return the contact arm into engagement with the terminal 181 to close the circuit to solenoids 89 and 111 for actuating the respective mechanisms for feeding the ink ribbonand the record paper. In completing its stroke the pin 185 on arm 176 by contact with the corresponding lug 184 oscillates lever 183 with bar 185 for shifting the circuit back again from terminal 181 toterminal 182. For recording aticket the selecting rod 59 may be released that by the exertion of spring 62 it may be turned to andyieldtor 46 with the character T. thereon into registration with the printing line and also moves the wedge member 168 to an intermediate position and out of contact with the crank shaft 159 that the exertion of spring 167 may elfect the engagement of the clutch of the counter T. By now repeating the movement of lever 65 by means of the pull cord 67 a record as shown in the next line of Fig. 8 will be made in the same manner as above described for a pass.
For recording a cash fare as shown in the third line of Fig. 8 is it only necessary to now move the lever 66 with the disk segment 64 by means of the pull cord 68. The sliding connection of lever 47 with rod 56 permits said lever to be moved by the contact of said disk segment therewith for the engagement of the pawl 52 with the third notch of series 49 in wing 48 and also for moving the sector 46 with the characterrC. thereon into registration with the printing line. The connections of disk segment 64 with the crank shaft 159 serves to turn the clutch 163 for actuating the counter C. and also to turn the clutch member 163 with the hook 164 clear of the path of hammer 149 that said hammer may record the corresponding number as shown in Fig. 7 of miles and the proper amount of local fare. The slotted connection 179 of lever 66 with the contact arm 176 effects the shifting of the circuit in the same manner as for the recording of a pass or a ticket For indicating on the record by means of the letter H. that a half fare has been collected instead of a full fare as shown thereon by the characters in either of the pairs 15 or 16 of the amount columns, the selecting rod 59 may be turned with the cam 57 thereon to the opposite position from that shown in Fig. 19 as required for recording a pass. This rotative movement of rod 59 takes up the slack in the sliding connections of rod 56 with leg 40 and moves lever 47 with the last notch of series 49 on wing 48 into engagement with latch 52 and also moves the sector 46 with the character H. thereon into registration with the printing line. This movement of lever 47 also actuates the double wedge member 168 in the opposite direction from that for recording a pass that it may shift the crank shaft 159 longitudinally for engaging the clutch member 162 of the counter H. Lever 66 may now be moved by means of the pull cord 68 a for actuating the same members and in'the same manner as above described for recording a cash fare and for making the record shown on the fourth line from the bottom of Fig 8.
For making the record to a destination station on the branch line as B of either class of fare the operating shaft 4 may be turned with the finger 37 into registration therewith on the dial which also turns wheels 7 and 8 with the characters of the same station, distance and fare thereon into the printing line.- The rearward longitudinal movement of the selecting rod 59 actuates lever 141 with sleeve 133 in a forward direction against the yielding exertion of spring 142. This forward movement of said sleeve shifts the longitudinal position of collar 143 on sleeve 132 with the hammer 144 into registration with thecolumn of branch line stations on the destination wheel 7 for of fare may be recorded by said hammer as in line 6 of Fig. 8.- I
For making records proper to the return trip of the car in toward the initial station the rod 185 with sleeve 132 should be moved in a forward direction and maintained by means of the engagement of the disk 151 with the in notch of the latch 152. Before removing the conductors key 82 the shaft 77 with the disk 7 6 should be turned thereby to the proper position for the automatic engagement of the pawl 75 with the notch 78 in said disk whereby the hooks 71' are caused to engage with and lock the levers 65 and 66 from being moved by the corresponding pullv cords until released by the re-insertion of a conductors key.
Having fully described my improvements what 1 claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination of an operating shaft, idle type wheels thereon, an intervening type wheel arranged to turn with the shaft, means for preventing the longitudinal movement of the wheels, and clutch members carried by the shaft in its longitudinal movement for alternately engaging with and turning the respective near wheel to its direction of movement.
2. The combination of a shaft journaled in fixed bearings, and movable longitudinally, a pair of idle type wheels thereon, an intervening type wheel splined on the shaft, and clutch connections carried by the shaft adjacent to the outer end of the idle wheels and movable thereby into alternate engagement with the corresponding said idle wheels for rotatively adjusting them separately.
3. Av traific recorder comprising an operating shaft, an'idle type wheel thereon, stationary type bars for preventing the longitudinal movement of the wheel, and teiminating in a printing line and clutch mechanism actuated by the longitudinal movement of the shaft for detachably engaging the wheel to turn with the shaft into different positions of registration with the type bar terminals.
4. A traffic recorder comprising an operating shaft, an idle type wheel thereon, a similar type wheel splined on the shaft, stationary type bars terminating contiguous to the rim of the wheels and in a line parallel with the shaft, a clutch member movable longitudinally with the shaft for detachably engaging the idle wheel to rotate in unison with the said similar wheel.
5. 'A traffic recorder comprising an operating shaft, a series of type wheels thereon, a series of stationary type bars interposed between the wheels and terminating on a line parallel with the shaft and flush with the face of the wheels, and means actuated by the longitudinal movement of the shaft for detachably engaging certain of said wheels to turn with the shaft, whereby the characters on the face of the wheels may be difierently assembled in the line of the bars.
6. A traffic recorder comprising an operating shaft, a series of wheels thereon each provided on its face with type characters in registration with those on the other said wheels, means actuated by the longitudinal movement'of the shaft for detachably engaging and turning with said shaft certain of said wheels with any of the type characters thereon into registration with any of the said characters on the other wheels.
7. A traflic recorder comprising an operating shaft, two type ,wheels mounted to turn thereon, an intervening type wheel splined on the shaft, said wheels being in relatively fixed longitudinal positions, and clutch members actuated by the longitudinal movement of the shaft for detachably engaging the corresponding idle wheel on the near side in relation to the movement of the shaft to turn therewith, whereby the characters on the wheels may be arranged on the same line in any desired order.
8. A traiiic recorder comprising a movable series of printing characters, a fixed series of'indieating characters, and means movable with the former series for indicating the predetermined position of any of its characters on the latter series.
9. A traflic recorder comprising an operating shaft, a finger and, a type wheel arranged to turn in unison therewith, a type wheel and a'finger independently mounted to turn on the shaft, and clutch members actuated by the longitudinal movement of.
wheel splined thereon, a similar type wheel and a finger independently mounted to turn on the shaft, and means actuated by the longitudinal movement of the shaft in its different rotative positions for simultaneously engaging said idle wheel and finger to turn with the shaft.
11. A trafiic recorder comprising an operating shaft, a dial concentric therewith, a type wheel splined on the shaft, a similar type wheel mounted to turn on the shaft, an idle and a fixed finger on the shaft, means for simultaneously engaging the idle wheel'and the idle finger with the shaft in different rotative positions) of the shaft therewith, similar characters arranged in the same order on the dial and on the wheels, whereby the relative rotative adjustment of the wheels by means of the shaft may be indicated on the dial by means of the fingers.
12. In a traffic recorder, the combination of an operating shaft, supported in fixed bearings, a member mounted to turn thereon and formed with a pin hole, a disk formed with peripheral notches secured on the shaft adjacent to said member and provided with a pin adapted to detachably engage with the pin hole thereon, a stop mounted at a fixed point and adapted to movably engage with the corresponding notch in the disk, during the longitudinal movement of the shaft with said disk to opposite sides of the stop whereby the rotation of the shaft is prevented until after the pin may be fully engaged with or dis-- engaged from the hole in said member.
13. A traffic recorder comprising an operating shaft journaled in fixed bearings and movable longitudinally therein, idle and fixed cooperating clutch members thereon adapted to be engaged or disengaged by the longitudinal movement of the shaft, a fixed stop, and a disk secured on the shaft and formed with peripheral notches for the movement of the stop therethrough during the longitudinal movement of the shaft with said disk to opposite sides of the stop whereby the simultaneous rotation of the shaft may be prevented.

A trafiic recorder comprising an op erating shaft provided with an idle and a fixed finger, means for detachably engaging the idle finger to turn with the shaft, a dial formed with a radial slot, for the lateral insertion of the shaft therein, and means for eratin 'removably supporting. said dialin a predeterminedposition and concentric with the shaft adjacent to the fingers. 15. A-trafiic recorder comprising an operating shaft, a graduated dial, means for removably supporting the dial concentricgraduated dial, and means for removahly supporting the dial concentric with the shaft andadjacent to-the fingers. I

A trafl'lc recorder comprlslng a wheel sector provided on its face with a series of printingcharacters, means for rotatively adjusting said sector with either of the extreme characters thereon into the same predetermined position, and separate means for rotatively adjusting said sector with the intermediate characters thereon successively into the same predetermined position.

A trafiic recorder comprising an 0scillating lever provided with a member having a series of printing characters thereon, a series of counters corresponding -tosaid characters, detachable selective connections with said lever for the respective counters, means for moving said lever and member with the characters thereon successively-into the same predetermined point, and means for successively actuating the corresponding counters.

A trafiic recorder comprising a member providedwith a series of printing characters, a corresponding series of counters, lever mechanism for moving said member with the characters intosuccessive registration with a fixed point and for selecting fixed point, andmeans for detachably engagingthe other series to movein unison with the said series.

A trafi'ic recorder comprising type characters arranged in groups in a printing line, a sheet ofpaper adjacent thereto, an ink ribbon interposedbetween the characters and the paperand at an oblique angle to the printing line, type hammers for the respective groups of characters, and electrically actuated mechanism for imparting 'suflicient momentum to the hammers for completing their stroke against the paper with the ribbon in contact with said characters. r

A trafiic recorder comprising a line of type characters, a series of type hammers therefor, actuating connections for contacting the hammers with the characters simultaneously, and means for intercepting the action and preventin the contact of certain said hammers with t e corresponding characters.
86. A traific recorder comprising groups of type characters arranged in a printing line, type hammers for contacting with respective corresponding said groups, and means for moving said hammers simultaneously to contact with certain other groups, and actuating connections with the hammers.
37. A traflic recorder comprising operating levers for certain members, automatic mechanism for locking said levers out of action, and key actuated mechanism for releasing said levers.
38. A trafic recorder comprising a series of printing hammers, ribbon feeding mechanism, a series of solenoids in circuit-having connections for actuating said hammers and mechanism alternately and hand actuated connections for controlling the circuit.
39. A traffic recorder comprising a series of type hammers, paper feeding mechanism,
and ink ribbon feeding mechanism, solenoids in circuit for actuating said elements and a contact arm for shifting the circuit to the diiierent solenoids successively.
