To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH DEGENER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 26 Hollmannstrasse, Berlin, in the Ger man Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Typographical Machines, of which the following is a specification, being a division of an application filed by me onthe 6th day of October, 1911, Serial No. 653,128.
My invention relates to typographical composing machines, such as linotype machines of the general organization represented in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 436,532, to O. Mergenthaler, wherein circulating matrices are released from a magazine in the order in which their characters are to appear in print and then assembled in line, the composed line transferred to the face of a mold, the mold filled with molten metal to form a slug or linotype against the matrices which produce the type characters thereon, and the matrices thereafter returned through a distributing mechanism to the magazine from which they started.
More particularly, the invention relates to the mold carrier or disk, which is ordinarily providedwithtwo or more molds of different size, any one of which may be brought into operative position, as desired. In ordinary practice, this disk is actuated by a pinionv which receives its motion from a pin or stud on a collar fast on the driving shaft; and in order to change the mold, it is necessary to shift the pinion forward by hand, thereby disengaging it from the driving pin or stud, and then to turn it rela tively to or independently of the shaft in order to rotate the disk and bring another mold into operative relation to the other parts, after which the pinion is againengaged with the pin. In order to avoid the inconvenience of this method of adjustment, 1 preferably employ a normally disengaged hand crank or equivalent device, arranged in such manner that its actuation serves both to draw the pinion forward and then to rotate it to adjust the disk, after which the crank or other member is automatically disengaged and remains at rest.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 have shown my improvements as employed in connection with the ordinary form of actuating means for the mold carrier, but obviously they may be employed in connection with other forms with similar efiect. It will also be understood that my improvements may themselves partake of diiferent embodiments, which will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to accord with the varying uses to which they may be put and still be comprised within the scope of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the im' proved means for effecting a change of mold; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a horizontal section on the line 33 of Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4, a rear elevation ofa detail; and Fig. 5, a sectional side elevation of the driving pinion for the mold carrier.
1 is the mold carrier; 2, one of its molds; 3, its driving or actuating pinion loose on the driving shaft 4; 5, the clutch fast on the shaft 4 to hold the pinion 3 to the latter; 6, the clutching pin; 7, its socket in the pinion 3; 8, the introducing groove; and 9, the reengaging spring resilient between a shoulder 10 on the boss 11 of the actuating pinion and a shoulder 12 fast to the shaft 4. All the foregoing parts are substantially as heretofore.
23 is a hand crank fast 011 the front end of a countershaft 24 rotatable in a bracket 25 fast to the machine frame.
26 is a collar fast on the shaft 24- and having a cam surface 27 operative in the vertical plane.
28 is an arm pivoted on the bracket 25 and provided with two fingers 29, 30, carrying rollers. The finger 29 engages in an annular groove 31 in the periphery of the boss 11 and the finger 30 with the cam surface 27 with which it is kept in contact by the spring 9.
32 is a spur wheel loose upon the shaft 24 and in gear with the pinion 3. It has more teeth than the latter, the excess quantity being a whole number which is also an aliquot part of the quantity of teeth on the pinion 3. Thus, if the latter has2t teeth, the wheel 32 may have an excess quantity of four, 2'. 6., of one siXth28 in all. There is a clutch between the shaft 24 and the wheel 32 consisting of a pin wheel 33 fast on the said wheel and having a pin 34 for each aliquot part of the number of teeth a the resilience of; a. sp hng 37;

1. In a type bar casting machine, the combination witha mold carrieradapted to be equipped with a plurality ofmo-lds, itsdrivpinion, the driving mechanism of the machine, and a. clutchbetween the said pin: ion and mechanism, of a hand, crank andv means by which the continued movement. of said crank in the same direction, firstly, opens the said clutch and. secondly, by'turning the said pinion, effects a change of 'mold.
2-. In a typebar casting machine, the combination with a mold carrier adapted to be equipped with a. plurality of molds, its driving pinion, and driving mechanism of the machine, and a, clutch between the said pinion and mechanism, of a hand crank and; means by which one revolution of the said crank, firstly, opens. the said clutch and sec ondl-y, turns the said pinion through one revolution thereby effecting. a change of mold.

In a typographical machine, the combination of a movable mold carrier, driving means therefor, and adjusting devices serving by their continued movement in the same direction first to break the driving connection between the carrier and its driving means and thereafter to operate the said driving means to adjust the mold carrier to a different position.
11. In a typographical machine, the combination of a movable mold carrier, driving means therefor, and rotary devices serving by their continued rotation first to break the driving connection between the carrier and its driving means and thereafter to operate the driving means to alter the position of the carrier.
12. In a typographical machine, the combination of a movable mold carrier, driving means therefor, actuating mechanism connected thereto, and manual devices capable of moving relatively to and of moving conjointly with the said driving means, and adapted by said relative movement to break the said actuating connection, and by said conjoint movement to operate the driving means to alter the position of the carrier.
13. In a typographical machine, the combination of a movable mold carrier, driving means therefor comprising a driving pinion, and rotary devices capable of rotating relatively to and of rotating conjointly with the driving pinion, and adapted by said relative rotation to break the driving connection be tween the carrier and the driving means, and by said conjoint rotation to operate the pinion to alter the position of the carrier.
14:. In a typographical machine, the combination of a movable mold carrier, driving means for moving the carrier in the ordinary operation of the machine, and independent manual devices, normally at rest, for operating the driving means at will to adjust the carrier to a different position, together with means to restore said devices to their normal position of rest after said adjustment has been effected.
15. In a typographical machine, the combination of a movable mold carrier, driving means for moving the carrier in the ordinary operation of the machine, and manual-devices normally disconnected from the driving means and adapted to be connected thereto at will so as to operate the same to adjust the mold carrier to a different position, together with means tending constantly to disconnect said devices from the driving means.
16. In a typographical machine, the combination of a mold carrier, driving means therefor comprising a shaft and actuating pinion, the said pinion being rotatable independently of the shaft to alter the position of the carrier, a loosely-mounted ad justing pinion meshing directly with the actuating pinion, and manual devices for operating the adjusting pinion at will to effect the aforesaid independent rotation of the driving pinion.
17. In a typographical machine, the combination of a mold carrier, driving means therefor comprising a driving pinion, a loosely-mounted adjusting pinion meshing with the driving pinion, and manuallyoperated devices to break the driving connection between the carrier and the driving means and to operate the adjusting pinion so as to alter the position of the carrier through the medium of the driving pinion.
18. In a typographical machine, the co1nbination of a mold carrier, driving means therefor comprising a driving pinion, a loosely-mounted adjusting pinion meshing with the driving pinion, and rotary devices serving by their rotation first to break the driving connection between the carrier and the driving means, and thereafter to establish a connection between themselves and the adjusting pinion, so as to adjust the mold carrier through the medium of the driving pinion.
19. In a typographical machine, the combination of a mold carrier, driving means therefor comprising a shaft and actuating pinion, a clutch between said shaft and pinion, a second shaft, an adjusting pinion loosely mounted thereon and meshing directly with the driving pinion, a clutch be tween said second shaft and adjusting pinion, and means whereby the opening of one of the clutches eflects the closing of the other.
