SHOE-TREE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 29, 1909.
I v Patented 0613.20, 1914;. SerialNo.525,360.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JOHN S. I'IANSEN,-I-t citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Shoe-Trees, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to certain improvements in shoe-trees or forms, lasts and similar devices. v i
One of the objects'of the invent c'njis to produce a shoe-tree or form in which the usual fore part and the heel part thereof are connected by means which permits "the easy insertion of the tree in a shoeso as to snugly I fit the same, or to be quickly withdrawn therefrom, combined with an improved adjusting device, so arrangedandconstructed as to provide for changing the length of the also to permit relative longitudinal or sliding movements thereof, together with a very simple, convenient, and durable form of adjusting device which I have found to be admirably adapted to the purpose of effecting the longitudinal movements of the parts of the shoe-tree. Thisv device, in the em bodiment of the invention selected for illustration herein, is composed of a. suitable rotatory member, such, for example, as a nut, which is supported by and turns freely on a part joincdto one of the connecting members and is in threaded engagement with a cooperating element, such, for example, the teeth of a rack formed on, or carried by, the other of said members. Preferably, such rotatory member is in swiveled engagement with a slide which is pivotally oined to the first-mentioned connecting member; and 1 is constrained to movthe other connecting "member; j I

Fig.1. a
In the embodiment of the invention shown herein, the numeral 1 indicates the fore part, which may be constructed of wood, or any other 'suitable material, in, the rear portion of which is preferably formed a kerf torec eive the forward end of her 3, the same beingcshownas pivotally connected with the fore part by a suitable pin 2, though any equivalent'means may be employed to .movably with each! other. The member 3 isformed with a slot, &, and is also formed, or p ro-. vided, upon each of its opposite edges with a rack comprising a plurality of teeth, 5, which areso'arranged as to cooperate with a worm or thread formed interiorly of a nut, 7, which surrounds and travels upon the member 3'in the same manner as upon an externalscrew-thread, the nut havingpret erably an e'vternal roughened surface to enable itto be more easily turned through engagement with the operators thumb and fin] ger. The nut 7 is carried by a slide, '6, to which it is confined by shoulders, S, 8, on the slide, or by other suitable means which will permit free turning movements of the nut relatively to the slide, but will prevent any relative longitudinat movements of these parts. a I
The heel part, 14, which may be of rounded, ellipsoidal, or any other suitable form, has secured thereto the member, 10,, which is provided with an extension having an angu lar portion, 13, to constitute a handle for the convenient insertionof the tree ma shoe or for its removal therefrom, as well as for properly manipulatingthe toggle members, 3, and 10. At its forward end the member aconnecting memconnect said parts 7 its a v 6 0 In the drawings, Figure illustrates,;in
i is pivotally connected with the slide 6 by a pin, ll, whichvalso passes through-the slot 4.
By thisconstruction it willbe seen that the members 8- and 10 are pivotally joined:
together and that the member 3 is pivoted to the fore part so as to turn relatively.
thereto, whereby, if the parts of the tree are in the position shown by dotted linesin the,
drawing and are inserted in a shoe, and downward pressure applied to the connecting members through the handle, said memberswill act in the manner of a toggle to separate the fore and heel parts of the tree and to seat them firmly and snugly against the inside of corresponding parts of the shoe. If adjustments ofthe tree are desired, the operator may apply his thumb and a finger to the nut 7, and by turning it in one direction will cause the nut to travel alongthe teeth 5 rearwardly to separate the parts of the tree and thereby increase its length, and by turning thenut in the opposite direction will cause it totravel along the teetli in the proper direction to contract said parts and therebydecrease the length of the tree. These adjustmentsmay be accomplished very easily, and with the hand which inserts the tree in, or removes it from a shoe, either prior to or after the tree has.
been inserted in position. In the latter case, the threaded connection betweenthe nut 7 and the member 3 is such as to'provide a powerful leverage which enables the operator, through said parts, to exert the desired amount of stretching pressure against the fore part and heel part of theshoe.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the details of construction herein shown and described, but suchdetails may be varied and the invention may be embodied in other forms, without departing from the principles thereof.
Having thus described my invention,
whatI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of-the United States, is
1. Ashoe-tree having, in combination, a fore part, a heel part, a member connected with one of the said parts and provided with a rack, a member connected with the other of said parts, a slide pivoted to the lastnamed member and a rotary device carried by said slide and constructed and arranged to engage the teeth of said rack, to effect longitudinal adjustments of the shoe-tree.
2. A shoe-tree comprising a iore part, a heel part, a toggle member pivotally connected with one of said parts and having its edges provided with teeth, a toggle member connected with the other of said parts, a slide pivoted to the last-named member and arranged for longitudinal movements relatively'to the first-named member, and a nut encircling the slide and toothed memher and rotatively mounted on said slide whereby it is adapted to cooperate with said teeth in eflecting relative adjustments of the fore and heel parts.
3. A shoe-tree comprising a tore part, a heel part, a toggle memberconnected with one of said parts, said member having a slot and also having its edges provided with teeth, a toggle member connected with the other of said parts, a slide, means passing through the slot in the first-named toggle member and plvotally connecting said slide and lastnamedtoggle member, and a rotatory device carried by said slide and adapted to cooperate with said teeth in eflecting relative adjustments of the fore and heel parts.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of :two subscribmg witnesses.
