Specification of Letters Patent.

State of Kentucky, have invented certain.
new and useful Improvements in Vehicle Curtain-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vehicle .curtain fasteners, of the class in which an elongated head is pivoted upon an elongated base, in a manner such that the longer axis .of the head may be brought and held either parallel to or at right angles to the longer axis of the base, so that in the former position,
the head may be passed through a button hole in a curtain, and the head may then be turned to the latter. position, to hold the curtain in place.
The object of my invention is a fastener of the class described, and which is light, ornamental, economical in construction, and strong.
This object is attained by th means dein the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vehicle curtain fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank, from which the head and the pivot stem are formed. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken upon line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the base. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the base, with the head shown in its locking position, in dotted lines.
Referring to the parts :The carriage curtain fastener consists of an integral head A and pivot stem for swiveling the head upon a base E. The pivot stem passes through a perforation in the top of the base and engages a washer F, upon the interior of the hollow base, and the head is held in the position to which it is set by means of a coiled spring G, which is locatedbetween the washer F and the top of the base E.
The head A is formed from a blank of sheet metal, which consists of central strip A, end tags B B, and intermediate strips D D. Central strip A has converging sides a a a and a and tapered ends a a a and M. The intermediate strip is rectangular in shape.
In forming the head from the blank, it
is bent about its transverse axis, bringing theedge a intocontact with the edge a, and the edge a into contact with the edge a,
and the central part of the blank is drawn outward, to form the rounded top of the head. The tapered ends a a a and a form the outer corners .of the head, theintermediate strips D D formthe conical bottom of the head and the tangs B B contacting with each other, form the pivot stem of the head,
and are turned outward at their lower ends Z) 6, to hold the washer F upon the stem. The bottom of the head is undercut, adja cent to the cornerstheneof forming square shoulders- The base is struck up from a sheet of metal, into a horizontal plate 6 and a vertical boss 6. The top of the boss has a longitudinal recess 6 which is crossed centrally by a transversenotch c leaving a continuous curved ridge around each edge of the boss. The plate 6 has around its periphery a downturned flange c and has screw holes surrounded by down-turned I flanges e scribed in the specification, and illustrated.
hen the fastener is in its inoperative position, viz., in position to be inserted into an eyelet, as shown in Fig. 1, the tapered portion of the bottom formed by the parts D D are seated in the recess 6 and the shoulders of the head rest upon the curved ridges at ends of the top of the boss 6. There is thus no perceptible space left be tween the base and the head which enhances the ornamental appearance thereof.
When the head is turned to its operative position, viz., at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1, the tapered portion of the bottom rests in the notch 2 and the abrupt shoulders of the head form a square contact against which the outer face of the curtain bears firmly, thus preventing the fastener slipping through the eyelet. By having an open space left in the bottom of the head, and by forming undercut shoulders, additional space is left between the plate e and the head, to provide room for thick curtains.
What I claim is 1. A vehicle curtain fastener comprising a base having an elongated boss formed thereon and provided with a longitudinally extending shoulder-receiving depression in the face thereof, a marginal rib along each end, of the face, and a shoulder-receiving depression extending transversely across the face thereof and between the ribs at a point intermediate the ends of the boss, an elongated head pivotally secured to the boss and located axially, with relation thereto, and having shoulders formed thereon intermediate the ends thereof, for engaging the transversely extending depressions When the head is turned to an operative position, With rela nal ribs When the boss is in the inoperative IPOSIUOH, and "means for holding the head against the face of the boss.
2. A vehicle curtain fastener comprising a base, an elongated boss formed on the base and having longitudinal and transverse depressions formed therein, marginal ribs surrounding the ends of said longitudinal depression, an elongated head formed of sheet metal and conforming to the outline of said boss and pivotally mounted on said boss, means for yieldingly pivoting said head on said boss, strips formed integrally With the metal'of said head and brought together at their lower edges to form shoulders adapted toengage saidlongitudinal or transverse depressions, and tangs formed on said strips, adapted to engage said boss to form a pivot for said head and a securing device for said yielding means.
3. A vehicle curtain fastener comprising, a head, oval in cross-section, and having shoulders formed on the inner face and located intermediate the ends thereof, a base having an oval boss formed thereon and provided, in the face of the boss, with a longitudinally extending shoulder-receiving slot, a marginal rib formed on each end of the boss and a transversely extending shoulderreceiving recess located midway between the ends of the boss and between the ribs, and a spindle for pivotally connecting the head in a central position, with relation to the boss and a spring for drawing the head against thefaee of the boss, said shoulders being so proportioned and located on the head, that they engage the transversely extending recess, when the head is turned to a position at right angles to the boss, and project into the longitudinally extending recess when the head is turned to a position parallel with the boss, and said ribs being so proportioned and located on the boss that each shoulder moves across one rib in passing from one recess to the other.
