To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM -A. COPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mullinville, in the county of Kiowa .and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window and Door Latches, specification. v
This invention relates to a securing device which is intended to be used for holding either a door or awindow in a closed position.
One of the objects of the invention is to so construct the device that it can be used for either purpose without any-adjustment. Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that when in place a window will be securely held in closed po sition with the securing device so located that it cannot be easily worked loose by a person outside the window.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the securing device that it may be used for extracting tacks as well as for se of which the following is a curing a window'or door in a closed po-' sitlon.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the course of the following speci cation wherein a preferred form of the invention is described.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein I Figure l is a perspective view of the improved locking device; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a key used in connection with the locking device shown in Fig. 1 when securing a door; Fig. 3- a sectional view showing the locking device applied to a window; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing' the locking device applied to a door.
Referring to Fig. 1 it willbe seen that this locking device comprises a plate. 10
which may be formed of heavy sheet metal or may be formed by casting. ,This plate is.
provided at each end with a flange 11 which has a sharpened edge 12 and is provided with a notch 13. The notch 13 is provided so that when it is desired to use the device as a tack extractor the flange may be placed beneaththe tack with the tack positioned in the not-ch and the device then tilted to extract the tack. Sharpened fingers 14 extend from opposite ends of the plate 10 and are intended to dig into the upper and lower sashes 15 and 16 as shown in Fig. 3 so that Specification of Letters Patent Application filed October 1, 1913.

It should be noted that by having the fingers 14 positioned as shown, the upper and lower sashes will be forced apart a certain extent when the securing means is applied and thus held in tight engagement withthe window frame. This will prevent the windows from rattling in. case the wind blows. One end portion of the plate 10 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 17 which is provided so that a tapered securing key. 18 can be passed through the slot as shown in Fig. 4.
When this device is used to secure a window, the upper and lower sashes are first moved to a closed position and the device -1s then applied as shown in Fig. 3 with the sharpened fingers 14 embedded in the sashes. It will be impossible to open the sashes when thisdevice is used since the device is positioned at an incline and therefore any movement to raise or lower the sashes will cause the points of the fingers to dig deeper into the wood of the window sashes.
When'this device is used to secure a door the plate is. positioned as shown in Fig. 4 with the sharpened flange at one end embedded in the door frame 19. The door 20.
is then closed and the key 18 is then driven through the slot 17 until it extends partially across the door and partially across the door frame. By having the key tapered it causes a Wedging action which will tighten the plate and securely hold it in position. An opening 21is formed in the key so that it may be carried upon a key ring and thus danger of it being lost prevented. It should also be noted that the smaller end 22 may be of such size that the key can be used as a screw-driver.
What is claimed is:
' 1. A fastening device of the character described comprising a plate, and tapered penetrating fingers extending from one edge of saidfjplate adjacent the op osite ends thereof and extending diagonal y from the plate in opposite directions.
2. A fastening device of the character described comprising a plate, and penetrating fingers extending from opposite ends there,- of, said fingers extending diagonally from the plate in opposite directionsto each other. Y
