Be it known that I, F RANK O. HnLLsTRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grove, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Rail-Support, of which the following is av specification.
rlhis invention relates to rail supports or stringers, one of the objects being to provide a composite structure made up of a plastic filling, a metal sheathing, and a cushioning element whereby a heavy durable structure is obtained and the rail is provided with a continuous cushioning support which allows ties to be completely dispensed with.
A further object is to provide a rail support or stringer the sheathing and cushioning members of which form a mold for retaining the plastic filling during the construction of the stringer so that the cost of producing the stringer is reduced to the minimum.
A further object is to provide simple means whereby the sides of the sheathing are securely tied togethei1` and additional means for anchoring said sides to the plastic filling.
A further object is to provide improved means for connecting opposed stringere or supports.
A further object is to provide a casing which constitutes means for preventing lateral displacement of the rails, the tie devices employed for connecting the rail supports or stringers being formed with integral rail retaining means so that it becomes unnecessary to employ spikes or similar fastening devices.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it Abeing understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates an outer casing strip formed of sheet metal, this strip being provided with an upstanding flange 2 along its upper or inner edge. The strip 1 is inclined downwardly and laterally away from the flange 2 and merges into an upstanding wall 8 from which projects an inwardly extending Harige 1. An angle strip 5 constituting a combined reinforcing and anchoring means is riveted or otherwise secured to the lower surface of the inclined portion of the strip 1 and extends longitudinally of the strip.
rlhe inner casing strip 6 is similar to the strip 1 and includes a downwardly and laterally inclined portion along the upper edge of which is provided an upstanding longitudinal flange 7 while the lower part of said inclined portion merges into a vertical wall 8 having an inwardly extending longitudinal flange 9. An angle strip 10 constituting combined anchoring and reinforcing means, is riveted or otherwise secured to the bottom of the inclined portion 6 and extends longitudinally thereof forming an inverted V- shaped saddle over the underlying plastic substance.
A. cushioning block 11 of wood or the like is interposed between the flanges 2 and 7 but does not extend to the upper edges of the flanges. Consequently a seat is formed upon the block 11 and between the upper edge portions of the flanges 2 and 7 for the reception of the rails R, the said flanges 2 and 7 constututing means for preventing the rails from shifting laterally oli of the block 11.
Bolts 12 are extended inwardly from the vertical wall 3 and terminate in hooks 13 for engaging the inner ends of eye bolt 14, the outer ends of these eye bolts being held to the vertical walls 8 in any suitable manner.
Then the bolts 12 and 11 are in engagement with each other, they prevent the casing members from moving apart at their bases.
For the purpose of securing the cushioning blocks 11 between the flanges 2 'and 7, bolts 15 are extended transversely through the blocks and also through the flanges 2 and 7, these bolts being preferably formed with the usual oval portions 16 for preventing rotation thereof. @ne end of each bolt engages the upstanding portion 17 of a rail retaining plate, this plate having a downwardly and laterally inclined tongue 1S and an inwardly extending rail engaging lip 19. Said lip is adapted to extend over the flange 2 and to lap the outer base flange of the rail R, as shown particularly in Fig. 2. Tongue 18 is engaged by a bolt 20 which extends through the strip 1 and into a nut 21 seated under the plate 1. 'lhis nut can be of any suitable type, either the ordinary one piece nut, or it can be an expansion nut of the usual type.
Arranged along the plate 6 at desired intervals are tie straps having upwardly and outwardly inclined portions 28 adapted to rest snugly upon the inclined portion of the plate 6 and to be secured thereto by means of bolts 2aY which extend through the plate (5 and the reinforcing strip 10 and into engagement with a nut 25 which can be of the usual one piece form or can be an expansion nut of the usual type. Each inclined portion merges into an upwardly extending portion 26 having rail retaining lip 27 at its upper end adapted to extend over the Vflange 7 and to lap the inner base flange of the rail lil. rlhe bolt 15 extends through the i'lange 7 and the upstanding portion 2G and it will be apparent that when a nut 28 is tightened on the bolt 15, the flanges 2 and 7 will be clamped tightly upon the block 11 while the rail engaging lips 19 and 27 will be brought into intimate engagement with the base flanges of the rail lt.
All of the space between the plates 1 and G and below the blocks 11 is filled with a plastic material 29, preferably concrete, the bolts 12 and lll being anchored within this filling and being held thereby against separation while the filling is furthermore anchored tightly in the casing made up of plates 1 and G by the flanges il and 9, the bolts 12 and 14, and the reinforcing and anchoring strips 5 and 10. lt has been found that the structure can be readily made by assembling the parts 1 and 6 in inverted positions,placing the cushioning blocks 11 between the flanges 2 and 7 and then, after lilling the ends of the spaces between the plates 1 and 6 with blocks or heads not shown, pouring the concrete into the mold thus produced and allowing it to set and harden. The structure can then be reversed so as to bring the exposed fiat surface of the plastic filling lowermost whereupon the Stringer or rail support is ready for use.
A1t will be seen that the structure herein described provides a heavy and durable support for the rails and obviates the necessity of utilizing the ordinary cross ties such as commonly employed. Furthermore it becomes unnecessary to employ spikes or similar fastening devices, in View of the fact that the particular rail fastening means disclosed are used. rllhe blocks 11 atlord ample cushioning means for the rails and as the rails are provided with continuous unbroken supports, there is no danger of said rails breaking or causing the wheels to pound.

1. A rail support including opposed casing members having spaced inwardly directed bottom portions, upwardly extending rail retaining portions, tie devices, and a plastic filling anchored between the .casing portions and adapted to engage the road bed.
2. A rail support including opposed casing members having spaced inwardly extending bottom. portions, and upwardly extending rail retaining portions, and a plastic material anchored between the casing members and completely filling the space therebetween and below the upwardly ex tending rail engaging portions said lilling deing adapted to bear downwardly upon the road bed.
A rail support including opposed casing members having inwardly extending bottom portions and upwardly extending rail retaining portions, means connecting the casing members adjacent their bottoms for holding them against spreading, a plastic filling interposed between the members and anchored by said connecting means, a cushioning element interposed between the upstanding rail engaging portions and bearing upon the plastic material.

A. rail support including opposed casing members having inwardly extending bottom portions and upwardly extending rail retaining portions, means connecting the casing members adjacent their bottoms for holding them against spreading, a plastic filling interposed between the members and anchored by said connecting means, a cushioning element 'interposed between the upstanding rail engaging portions and bearing upon the plastic material, said rail engaging portions being extended upwardly above the cushioning member, and means extending transversely through the cushioning member and the upstanding rail engaging portions for holding said member and rail engaging portions together.
5. A rail supp ort including opposed casing members haring inwardly extending bottom portions and upwardly extending rail retaining portions, means connecting the casing members adjacent their bottoms for holding them against spreading, a plastic filling interposed between the members and anchored by said connecting means, a cushioning element interposed between the Vupstanding rail engaging portions and bearing upon the plastic material, said rail engaging portions being extended upwardly above the cushioning member, means extending transversely through the cushioning member and the upstanding rail engaging portions for holding said member and rail engaging portions together, and rail fastening devices engaged and held by said means.
G. A rail support including opposed casing members constituting the sides of the support and having upwardly extending continuous rail retaining flanges, a plastic material having all portions embraced between the casing members and anchored thereto, and a cushioning element interposed between the flanges and bearing upon the plastic material.
7 A rail support including opposed casing members constituting the sides of the support and a plastic filling having all portionsembraced and anchored therebetween, a cushioning block bearing downwardly on the filling and interposed between the fianges, said flanges extending above the block.
8. A rail support including opposed casing members constituting the sides of the support and a plastic filling having all portions embraced and anchored therebetween, a cushioning block bearing downwardly on the filling and interposed between the flanges, said flanges extending above the block, and rail fastening devices secured to the flanges and extending inwardly therebeyond.
9. A rail support including opposed casing members having upwardly extending continuous rail retaining flanges, angular reinforcing strips secured to the lower faces of the members, a plastic filling interposed between the members and anchored thereto by the strips, a cushioning block interposed between the flanges, said flanges extending upwardly above the block.

A rail support including opposed casing members having upwardly extending continuous rail retaining anges, angular reinforcing strips secured to the lower faces of the members, a plastic filling interposed between the members and anchored thereto by the strips, tie bolts connecting the members and embedded within a filling.
11. A rail support including opposed casing members having upwardly extending continuous rail retaining iianges, angular reinforcing strips secured to the lower faces of the members, a plastic filling interposed between the members and anchored thereto by the strips, tie bolts connecting the members and embedded within a filling, and a cushioning block supported by the filling and interposed between the flanges.
l2. The combination with opposed rail supports, each including a metal casing, a plastic filling anchored therebetween, and means upstanding from the casing for engaging the base of a rail to prevent lateral displacement of the rail, of a tie element, means for securing said element to the opposed supports, and rail retaining means formed by the terminals of said element and lapping the base fianges of rails carried by the respective supports.
