1.1i 5.988. 5 li Applicaticn led November )Union-vil Military Home. in the. rounty oi"l -loiugoinery und )State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lilnprove ioents'in Propellers for Boats; und l do declare thev following' to be a fullrclear, and exact den-ription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to vvhieh it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which forni a partl of this speeileation.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in propelling means for boats.
The objet-t of the invention is to provide a device ot' .this vpe which is simple in construction and in which a maximum amount ot the power is generated b v the drivinof engine or motor und is utilized in propel ing:r in power is accomplished as hereinafter described and elaimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of a boat equipped with my improved propellingr means: lfnf. is a bottoni plan viei'v of die same; l" is a section on the line a-/l. of Fig. l; lig. -l is a section on the line of Fig, l: and Fig. 5 is a seetion on the line e--rf oi' Fig. l.
ln the speeitiention and drawings, similar ret'erenee eliarimers indieate co1 responding parts.
The hull oi the boat vous-ists ot' a. bottom l, sides and an inclined rear end Pi which is sulliriently removed from the end of the bont to provide an inclosed space t'or the location ot' the propellers. Mounted in the interior of s. id boat on thc'liottom thereona muy he any well known form of prime mover such as an explosive engine 4. The said vengine 4 is provided with a shaft 5 which extends through n suitable bearing G in the rear end of the hoat. The end'o'r' the shaft 5 opposite the engine is supported by a bearing 7 which projects 'from the rear end of the boat. Mounted ou the extreme end of the shaft .3 is a screw propeller S which lies below the water line and consequently revolves in the water which arises between the sides and under the rear end of the boat. In addition to the screw propeller S, the boat is provided with right and lett paddle wheels S) n loch are attached pecretoxi ot' Letters Eatent.

The chain lT extends forwardly over and through a suitalile openingr in the rear ene 3 ot' the boat ohove the water line, to a sprockety 1H. The chain l? ma)` he `guided by rollers ll). The Spi-onkel' 1S is mounted on a shaft 2l journaled in a hearing Also mounted on the shaft 21 is a bevel gear 23 in mesh with a bevel gear 2l ori` the shaft 5, and through which the power geir erated by the paddle-wheels is delivered to the, shaft to he expended usefully by the propeller 8. The sprocket chain l? is also instrumental in driving thepaddle-wheels 9, it' fo any reason, the propeller S, should become inoperative. Means are also provided for driving from the shaft 'l0 any auxiliary devices such as a dynamo or hilge pump. and which Consists of a drive pulley 25, sprocket chain .26 similar to the sproolietchain 17, and a sproeloft 27 mounted on 'the shaftl l0.
llvhilein the-'drmvings, I have shown my improved propeller as applied to a simple form oflat bottoni boat, it is to be under stood that this simplified hull .is shown merel vfor the purpose of illustration only, and t at the invention is adaptable to any well known' form of hull.
Having described my invention, what I' mounted within said inclosed s ace rea'rv wardly of said propeller and pa dle wheels 'mounted on o posite si es of said inclosed space, said pa die Wheels and impact wheels being fixed to a common shaft, and gearing by means of which the shaft of the ropeller is connected to the common shaflt 'of the impact and paddle wheels.
AIn testimony whereof I aix mysignature in presence oftwo witnesses.
