In constructing a stand in accordance with my invention, a standard or upright 10 is provided, having a suitable base 11, and mounted on the same is a sup ort adapted to constitute a book rest, IIlllSlC holder, or table. The support 12 is mounted on the standard 10, to turn thereon, the standard being provided with a set collar 13, to be ad- 'usted at various heights, and there being a racket 13 of U-shape, the arms of which I slip onto the standard 10, above the support. Overhanging the bottom 12 are rocker fingers or arms 18, 18 to hold the leaves of the book A open. The fingers 18, 18', are fulcrumed as at 19011 the support 12, prefer ably between cars 20 formed on cli s 23, the one clip being on the outer and o the support 12, and the other on a artition 12 near the swiveled endof the older. The short arms of the 'fing'ersIS, 18, are connected by links 21 with levers 22, 22, which are actuated in a manner hereinafter described, said levers being'guided in keepers 24, formed byturning up the lower ends of the ch 5 23. The said clips at the inner side are ormedwith feet 25, to which are securedflat one end, retractile springs 26, the opposite ends of which springs are connecte withthe respective fingers 18, 18", to normally hold the said fingers in the low ered position over the book A, or the like.

Additional guides are rovided for the levers 22 in the form of c lps 27, 27'. One of the levers, as 22, has an operatin arm 28, having an ofl'set finger piece 29 at t e upperend for the operation of the lever. On the arm'28 is a rack 30, meshin with" which is a sector-31 on one arm of a ell crank lever and a connecting rod- 38 extends "from said-bell crank lever to a crank arm 34 on a shaft 35 mounted to turn in the holder 12 at the opposite end from the bell crank lever. On the shaft 35 at the end opposite the arm 34, is a rocker arm 36 formed with a toothed sector 37, which meshes with a rack 38 similar to the rack 30 and secured to the adjacent lever 22". It will be obvious that pressure on the finger piece 29 will rock the lever 22, and through the adjacent link 21 will raise the finger 18, and at the same time through the connecting rod 33 and the described connections the lever 22 will be simultaneously rocked and raise the finger 18.

The fin ers 18, 18 permit the leaves of the book to be turned from beneath one finger and passed under the other. The swivel connection erlnits of the holder 12 being adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 6, to constitute a music holder, or a boo rest for reading in a standing position, or the said holder, while adjusted approxiperson seated on a chair, as B. that a book may be read by a person reclining on a bed as C; in this osition the finers 18, 18, support the boo and prevent it rom closing. In Fig. 10 the holder is shown as arranged on the standard 12, to be used as a table for light service.

It will be clear from the foregoing that the device may be very readily ad usted for its various purposes, and that the rocking of the arms 18, 18, may be very conveniently eflected.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a stand of the character described, a standard, a holder adapted to receive a book or other article to be held, means for swiveling the support on the standard, and means for holding a book on the support facing either upwardly or inverted, a clamp rod for clampin a book or a piece of music at the center, gers mounted at their outer ends to be rocked and disposed toward each other, springs normally tending to hold the fingers 1n the lowered position to overlie the leaves of the book, levers linked to the said fingers, guide keepers for the levers, racks on the levers, toothed sectors meshing with the racks, rocker elements inrigid relation to the sectors, and a connecting rod uniting said rocker elements.

2. In a stand of the character described, a holder to receive a book or the like, means for clampin the book, said 'means'including fingers, 0 ps secured to spaced members be lowered to the position shown in' ing the levers with the of the holder, the clips havin ears on which the fingers are fulcrumed, t e clips at the inside each being formed with a foot, springs connected with the feet and with the respective fingers at the interior of the holder, the clips furthermore being upturned at the outer sides thereof constituting guides, levers fulcrumed to the holder and movable in said guides, links connecting the levers with the fingers, and means for operating the levers in unison.

3. In a stand of the character described a holder to receive a book or other article, fingers overlying the holder at their inner en s, the fingers being fulcrumed intermedi-' ate their ends, springs normally acting to hold the fin ers in the lowered position, levers for roc ing the finlggrs, links connectgers, guide kee ers 0n the holder near the outer ends of t e levers, and additional guide kee ers on the holder inward from the first guide keepers. 4. In a stand of the character described, a holder to receive a book or the like, means for mounting said holder, fin ers fulcrumed at their outer ends on the hol er and extending toward each other, levers operatively connected with the fingers, said'levers being formed with racks and one of the levers having a finger piece, toothed sectors engaging the racks and mounted to rock, and connections between the respective sectors.
