are not gone into andl are notillul'strated as they are of a usual well known form. This invention is associated with and is an addition to these parts, the same being principally secured to the plate 1, although it 1s connected to and operated by otherparts of the machine.
The presser foot 6 comprises a frame structure, the side portions of which are.
downward movement. Compression springs 12-12 in suitable recesses at each end of the face bar'8 servelto hold the same yieldinglyA in position sothat even pressure is secured on the face bars from end to en'd', and owing to the character of these 'supports work4 of varying uneven thickness can be readily held b the same and the same can be effectively stitched. At the front side and reai" lside of this frame are laterally yielding Amembers 16-16, the lower edges .of which coincide.
with the lower face of the presser" foot.
These parts are carried on extensions 15-15 'kins or tablecloths, for instance.
of the flat blade springs 13 extending within the frame and outwardly at each side of the arm 7, being lsecured thereto by screws 14.
Beneath the presser foot is a clamp plate 74 having an aperture 77 corresponding to the opening of the presser foot. This plate is curved upwardly at 75 and then rearwardly, and is secured to the forward end of the oscillating lever 38 by'screws 76 (see Figs. IV and VI). This plate 74 rests upon the work plate of the sewinO machine and' passes freely over the same when the label is eing passed to the needle. This clamp plate 74 may be dispensed with and the goods allowed to slip over the work plate of the sewing machine. For most work, however, the plate is a very satisfactorydevice, as it insures the delivery of the work in the best possible form without danger of wrinkling or wear, and at the same time, the clamp plate 74Y protects the work plate of the sewing machine from` injury so that the smooth surface is always'insured for the lmovement of the work in the machine. In Fig. XIV, I show this presser foot greatly simplified and in a form that is preferred where regular Workis being done which is always of an even thickness such as affixing labels to nap- In this figure the presser foot is shown in inverted perspective, so that the parts can be readily seen. The presser fo'ot is made up of front andrear bars 83 suitably spaced to'. engage the fabric, and the yieldable end members .84-184 are formed integral witb., thevsprings l13;-,13 which Aare extended Idownwardly for.
that purpose. These springs are secured to the Aarm 7 bythe' screws 14 as before, as
clearly appears from an inspection of Fig. XIV'.
I The arm 19,.,isy secured to the actuating lever frame 20'by` hinged member 21 engagcured to the needle' end of the frame 20,'the'A tension lof said sprlngl being adjustableby the thumb nut 26. These parts arecarried by a baseplate 27,- which issecured to 'the machine plate 1 by clamp screws 28 in the slots 29 thereof (see Figs.v I and III), thel same being detailed particularly in'Fig. III.
vdescribes the structure'as an attachment.- The device might lbe. incorporated and made integral'with the `main casing." 4
j --The actuating lever frame 20 is carried upon an adjustable' fulcrumpri' swivelBOv which is clamped 'in a slot 31' 'of the base plate 27.' `Ap'roj'ection 32 engages in atop d groove 33 ateach side of the slotv and a hexe agon4 nut 34 engages a bottom groove 35 at each side, whereby this fulc'rum pivot can bevery readily'adjusted. A slide 36'is pivoted on this fulcrum and is retained ,in its place bythe shouldered screw 37 'above the same, so that the actuating lever franfe 20 plays freely back and forth on this slide, which is located in the ways 38. formed thereon, so that the actuating lever frame 20 has a swivel action on the pivot'30, and at the same time slides freely backend forth on slide 36, permittingits movement tor be universal and under complete control.
loaf
The 'actuating lever frame 20 is driven by y the ratchet.A wheel 39which is' carried o'n` a suitablelhub projection from the axis of the pinion 39'.,- The pinion 39 is supported on the pointed bearings 40 and 42, the bearing 40 being screw threaded into the base plate and locked in position by the, lock nut 41, andthe bearing I42 being supported by the supporting arm 43. It is screw threaded therein, and lock nut 44 is provided for locking the same in position. A vertical oil hole 45 is through theentire bearing parts whereby the same can be effectively lubricated.
The ratchet wheel 39 is actuated by the pawl 47 carried on the pin 48, in yoke 46. which is pivoted on the axis of thepinion 39. A spring 49 holds thevpawl in engagement with the ratchetv wheel. The pin '48 terminates in a b'all 50, which is one member of a ball and socket joint, by whichthe link 52 is connected thereto. The rock shaft arm 51 is connected by the link 52 to the pin 48. The link 52 is connected by ball and socket joints 53-53 at each end. The rock shaft arm l is carried upon the feed rock shaft 54;. Any rock shaft connectedl to the driving mechanism of the sewing machine will serve the same purpose. By this means it will be noted that whenever the feed shaft is rocked, the ratchet wheel is advanced and the mechanism provided is operated. The righthand end of the actuating lever frame 20 comprises a rack and pinion structure by which this feed device is operated for feeding the labels to the needle. A straight rac-k 58 with suitable teeth thereon is disposed toward the back of the frame, and is held in place by set screwsg59. A straight rack 60 parallel therewith is at the front of the frame, and is retained in position by set screws 61. A curved rack 62 is toward the left or the needle end of this frame, and a corresponding curved rack 63 is on the opposite side thereof. These are clamped be-y tween the racks 58 and 60, the ends of these racks 62 and 63 being formed with gear teeth that exactly mesh with the gear teeth of said rack whereby they are adjustable back and forth, and are retained in correct operative relation. Because these are adjustable on the gear teeth, whenever they are adjusted the pinion which actuates the same meshes with the gears without further fitting or adjusting. A cam structure is provided for guiding this actuating lever frame, so that thepresser foot 6 will be correctly guided and the label Afed in proper manner to the sewing machine needle to he stitched. A. guide device for engagement with. the cam is provided at the right hand end of the actuating lever frame. This guide device comprises a disk '66 on the lower end of journal pin 67, which is retained in place hy shouldered screw 68. A roller 64 to contact with the main cam guide surface to follow the surface thereof is carried upon a journal pin 65 which projects downwardly from the disk 66. To insure proper engagement of the guide roller 61 at all times with the cam, a supplemental guiding cam surface 72 is provided, over` which a supplemental guiding roller passes. This roller isborne on a pivot 71 on the disk 66.
The principal or l/ower cam surface 69- ls disposed on the base plate 27 on the edgeof whichthe guide roller 64 travels, as will he seen from an inspection of Figs. X and IX.
' On top of this main cam 69 is the supple- 'the corner.
Owing to the fact that these rollers are both carried upon the same pivot plate, the auxiliary roller 70 becomes disengaged from the said projection, owing to the pivoting thereof, and permits the travel around the same. The cam plates are made integral and are secured in place by the attaching screws 69. l
The presser foot is elevated by suitable connecting rod 82 to a treadle or foot lever or other device not shown. This connecting rod 82 is connected to levell 80 which is fulcrumed at 81 on the back side of thearm of the sewing machine and is provided with a lateral extension 79 which is connected by a cable connection 78 to the presser foot lever 19, as clearly appears in detail in Figs. I, III and IV.
From this description of the parts, the operation of the device is clear. The presser foot 6 is elevated. The yielding ends 1616 thereof are pressed toward each other by the grasp of the operator, the foot is then let down upon the label or other work and the compressed parts 16-16 are allowed to separate, thereby putting tension upon the label or work and smoothing it out perfectly smooth and flat upon the clamp plate 74 or on the work plate of the sewing machinek This raising and lowering of the presser foot is accomplished by depressing the foot control through the connection 82, which raises the presser foot 6. The machine is started and very rapidly and automatically feeds the label or other work to the needle, owing to the step-by-ste action of the' ratchet of the automatic feed. The feed ratchet is operated at every oscillation of the arm 51 by the feed shaft or other oscillating or rocking part of the machine. The cam plates at the right of the machine are engaged by the guide devices and control the arm to feed the label and give the same exactly the correctmovement for placing the line of stitches in the edge of the label as required. I
It is very clear that by removing the particular label presser foot, by detaching the same and substituting another size, and readj usting the rack and substituting a cam plate of roper dimension, any size or form of label wit in the capacity of the machine can be iet very readily stitched and attached in this way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: f'
1. In a label attaching machine, the combination with the bed, arm, head, needle bar and driving means of a sewing machine, of a supporting plate secured to the bed of said machine, an actuating lever frame structure carried thereby comprising a gear toothed frame part with inwardly projecting gear teeth; a swivel slide'on the said supporting plate engaging insuitable ways on the said actuating lever frame; a presser foot carrying arm hinged to the said actuating lever frame; a suitable spring for putting pressure thereon, a presser foot comprising .a'
