APPARATUS FOR FINISHING OR POLISHING CYLINDRICAL SURFACES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY ERNEST MAssMANN and WILLIAM RICHARD TINDALL, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at 26 New Station road, Fishponds, Bristol, in the county'of Gloucester,
England, have inyented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for FlIllSlling or Polishing Cylindrical Surfaces, of
which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus for finishing or polishing internal cylindrical surfaces of cast ironfcast steel and other non-ductile metals, and is primarily intended for finishing or polishing the internal surfaces of the cylinders of internal .combustion and other high speed engines,
and also cylinder liners or the like, in which 7 a highly finished or polished surface and an exact and uniform diameter are essential The chief object of the present invention is to dispense with the comparatively costly 'aiidlength, operation of grinding and'lapping, there y overcoming certain disadvanxtages andobjections,wh1ch occur with such operations.-
According to this invention lnstead of A grinding or lapping a rough internal cylindrical metal surface such as is left after casting or rough drilling, a polished surface is obtained by means of a roller tool which is placed within the cylinder or work and then set so as to be in contact with the internal surface without expanding or compress ng the metal and then causing relative rotation and longitudinal movementor reciprocation between the tool and the work to take place. The minute roughened surfaces are worn away by friction, and the action may be said tated and simultaneously caused to expand to compress or consolidate the'internal sur- I face being treated. v
Further according to our invention we may provide suitable cutters in combination with the roller tool which cutters remove any irregularities. in the surfaces that might prevent the movement of the tool within the cylinder. One of the advantages of the Specification of Letters Patent.

Said longitudinal rolling action is that the pores of the metal are closed, and furthermore there is a complete absence of emery or carborundum dust, lead particles, sand and other materials which are used in the ordinary grinding and lapping operations. The rolling action is also advantageous in that it does not generate heat to the same extent as occurs in the usual grinding and lapping o eratlons and consequently distortion of the article caused by. the subsequent cooling is less likely to take place. The apparatus or tool which we may-employ for carrying out this method may comprise, a number of rollers rotatably mounted on sl des which can be adJllStGd radially by a central conical or tapered member, operated by a rotary device on the tool body containlng the said slides, the adj usting device being of less cross sectional area than the area contained within the circular path traversed by the rollers. Suitable cutters may be used in combination with the rollers and are adjusted to remove inequalities in the internal surface under treatment, on being moved through the cylinder.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, it will now be describedunore fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which K Figure 1 is an elevationlpartly in section) of one form of the improved apparatus. In the example shown each of the rollers is barrel shaped and is mounted to rotate freely, on a pin 0' secured in any appropriate rotatably carried by manner-to the slide 6; ball bearings may be provided as shown ate and c. The upper end of the stem is provided with a cross piece 03 which at its extremities projects through oppositely disposed longitudinal slots a* in the body a; a coil spring (i surrounding the stem is interposed between the cross piece 03 and a collar or bush d fixed within the spindle a to permit the stem to be longitudinally moved or adjusted.
A portion of the exterior of the spindle is screw threaded to receive a nut e which at its lower part is adapted to engage with rollersd carried on the extremities of the cross piece 03 of thestem d. Thus when the nutis adjusted or angularly displaced in one direction it bears upon the cross piece and forces the stem downwardly against the action of the spring thereby adjusting the radial slides and the rollers carried thereby outwardly by the action of the conical end of the stem and the inclined inner faces of the slides b. Men the nut is adjusted or angularly displaced in the opposite direction the spring pushes the cross piece in the opposite longitudinal direction thus allowing the slides to be moved inwardly. The upper part of the nut is provided with a beveled annular face 6' which is marked jwith graduations or a scale, the said scale' being adapted to register with a fixed point or marking e on the spindle, so that any desired adjustment can easily be obtained by setting a given graduation or the scale against the marking e In operation, the tool is held on or' connected to any suitable rotary shaft by means of a chuck or the like and when the tool-is positioned within the cylinder (the internal surface of. which is to be finished or polished) and the nut adjusted to move the rollers into contact with the internal periphery of the cylinder, the shaft and tool 'are caused to rotate During the rotation of thetool around its longitudinal axis the rollers bearing against the internal cylindrical surface are caused to rotate on their own respective pins, and thus the cutters are caused to rotate and remove inequalities on the surface." Owing to the simultaneous longitudinal movement and reciprocation which is imparted to the tube the whole of. the internal peripheral surface is subjected to the action of the rollers and the cutters. What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Apparatus for finishing and polishing internal cylindrical surfaces comprising in combination, a casing or body having an enlarged lower portion, radially movable slides mounted in said enlarged portion, rollers carried bs said slides, a longitudinally movable'ladjii'sting member having a tapered end in contact with said slides for moving the same, a cross-head carried by said member, resilient means for forcing said adjusting member in one direction, and a rotating means threaded on said casing in contact with said cross-head for moving said adjusting member in an opposite direction.
2.'Apparatus for finishing and polishing internal cylindrical surfaces comprising, in combination, a casing or body having .an enlarged lower portion, radial slides movably mounted in said portion, a roller and cutter rotatably carried by each slide, a longitudinally movable adjusting member having a tapered end in contact with said slides for moving the same, said adjusting member having a cross-head on its end opposite the tapered portion, resilient means bearing against said cross-head for moving the ad- 'justing member in one direction, a rotating member threaded on said body in .contact' with said cross-head to move the adjusting member in an opposite direction, and a scale of graduations on said rotating member adapted to cooperate with a fixed point on said body.

An apparatus for finishing and polishing internal cylindrical surfaces, comprising in combination a casing or body having an enlarged lower portion, radial slides movably mounted in said portion, a cutter and roller rotatably carried by each'slide, a longitudinally movable adjusting member having a tapered end in contact with said slides for moving the same, a cross-head on said adjusting member, a spring within the casing bearing at one end against the crosshead for retracting the adjusting member I from the slides, a sleeve within the casing adapted to-be longitudinally adjusted therein and bearing against the opposite end of the spring whereby to vary the tension of the spring, and a rotating member threaded for adjustment on said body and adapted. for engagement with said cross-head whereby to project the adjusting member against said slides. a
