SHOE-BLACKING STAND.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER T. Mains, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful 1m provements in Shoe-Blacking Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoe blacking stands and particularly to means for hold ing a shoe in place on the head of the stand, the said invention including clamps adapted to engage the edges of the sole of the shoe and novel means being provided for forcing the pairs of clamping aws into engagement with the said edge of the sole, the arrangement being such that the pressure of the pairs of clamping jaws is equalized and the pairs of clamping jaws are operated from a single source of manipulation.
A further object of this invention is to provide novel means for transmitting the motion of a manually operated lever to the pairs of clamping jaws and for equalizing the pressure of the said jaws, furthermore, an object of the invention is to provide clamping jaws which are jointed so that the clamping or sole engaging ends thereof will swing into place for engaging the edge of the sole or will gravitate at the side of the head of the stand when the sole is released, the purpose of jointing the clamps being to prevent their projection to any considerable extent laterally of the head of the stand.
A still further object of this invention is to provide means for retaining the clamps in adjusted position, the said retaining means being operative to release the mechanism and move the clamps out of engagement with the edge of the sole.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of novel means for attaching the base of the stand to a platform or support.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote correspond ing parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspective Specification of Letters Patent.

In these drawings 15 denotes the base, 10 the standard and 17 the head of the blacking stand, the latter of which is of the gen eral (:onfiguration of a shoe sole; the head 17 is hollow and at the upper edge there are inwardly extending lugs 18 preferably integral with the head, the said lugs being provided with apertures 19 for the reception of fastenings such as screws 20 extending through the face plate 21 so that the said face plate is secured in place at the front of the head. The rear portion of the head has an upstanding rib 22 with an apertured flange the apertured flange being designed for engaging the fastening 21 for attaching the face plate to the head. The upper edge of the head has outwardly ex tending flanges 25 and 26 on each side, the flanges 25 and 26 being separated by a post :27 and a shoulder 29 is formed at the junction of the head and flange 26 on each side, the same forming a guide for one of the clamps. The face plate 21 besides the apertures for the reception of the fastenings 20 and 24, has two parallel ars 30 spaced apart and provided with apertures 31 for the reception of the pivot on which the c 'ierating lever 33 is swingingly mounted.
The face plate 21 is furthermore provided with apertured bosses 31 forming supports for a guide bar, to be presently explained, and the said face plate further carries studs 35 which act as guides for the clamps: the said clamps being identified by the numeral 36.
The construction of the clamps 36 is well shown in Figs. 9 and 10 and each clamp comprises an inner portion 37 and an outer portion 38, the same being hinged together by the pivots 39, which pivots may be of any ordinary construction and need not, therefore, be described in detail. The inner portion 37 of the clamp has a stud 40 thereon which is designed to enter one of the apertures 41 of the coupling plate 42, which coupling plate is adapted to slide longitudinally of the face plate and to be guided thereon or in relation therewith by the slot ted guide bar 43, the slots 44 and 45 of which are provided to receive the studs 46 which is carried by one of the plates 42. The relation of the parts is well shown in Fig. 3 wherein each coupling plate has its stud 46 in a. slot of the bar 43 and the coupling plates are shown as having the studs 40 of the clamps inserted in the apertures 41; therefore, as the coupling plates 42 are reciprocated longitudinally of the guide bar, the curved clamps are projected or retracted according to the direction of movement of the coupling plate, it being seen from an inspection of Fig. 3 of the drawing that the guiding studs 35 are in the slots of the clamps, thereby preventing the movement of the clamps longitudinally of the plate and compelling the said clamps to move laterally of the face plate as the coupling plates are reciprocated with relation to the guide bar. As a means for reciprocating the coupling plates, a link 47 is mounted on stud 46 of the rearward plate and a link 48 is mounted on stud 46 of the forward plate, the said links having their opposite ends pivotally connected to a rocking bar 48 which extends transversely through the operating lever 33 and is secured therein against displacement by a pin 49 extending through the rocking bar on each side of the operating lover. The pin 49 is shown in Fig. 2 and it will be understood that a pin is provided on the opposite side of the lever in a similar manner. In order to facilitate the rocking action of the rocking bar. the aperture 50 in the lever 33, is slightly larger than the rocking bar and the side surfaces of the lever are cut away as shown at 51 to form a bearing for the rocking bar. The upper end of the lever 33 is enlarged and the periphery thereof is provided with teeth adapted to be engaged by a detent 53 which detent will operate to retain the lever at different positions of adjustment. The detent 53 is made a part of a plate 54 which has side recesses 55 forming shoulders 56 and 57. The reduced portion of the plate 54 is designed to be applied between the ears 30 and the detent has an aperture 58 which is guided on a projection 59 at the end of the guide bar 43, it being shown in Fig. 2 that a spring 60 encircles the projection and is interposed between one of the bosses 34 and the said detent, the object of the spring 60 being to force the detent into engagement with the teeth of the lever.
It follows from the foregoing description and an inspection of Fig. 2 that if the lever is pulled outwardly from the standard the detent will automatically engage the teeth and retain the lever at different positions of adjustment whereby pressure on the outer end of the plate 54 will result in disengaging the detent from the teeth and releasing the lever. In order that the lever may be retracted automatically, 1 provide a spring (31 which has one end connected to the lever at (32 and has its opposite end anchored to the stud 63 carried by the inner wall of the head. The base 15 has near its lower end and internally thereof a web 64 apertured to receive the lingers of an operator who may insert his fingers through the apertures for the purpose of manipulating the bolt 65 which extends through an aperture (36 of the said. web. The upper surface of the web has shoulders 67 adapted to engage the square or angular portion of the bolt so that the said bolt will not rotate with relation to the web when the said bolt is being manipulatcd to clamp the base on a support. The outer end of the bolt 65 has a nut 68 for the purpose of tightening the bolt and causing it to draw the base firmly into contact with the support. The standard 16 has a hook 69 for holding polishing cloths or other implements used by the polisher.
It will be obvious from an inspection of the drawings that as the clamping plates are moved transversely of the head, the outer ends thereof which are jointed will fall by gravity and hang opposite the head and that when the clamping plates are moved inwardly, the engagement of the outer ends of the clamps with the edges of the flanges 25 and 26 will cause the elevation of the hinged end of the clamp so that it will slide under the face plate.
I claim 1. ln a blaeking stand, a suitably supported head, a face plate thereon. means for securing the face plate to the head. a guide bar, means for mounting the guide bar on the face plate, coupling plates, sectional clamps pivotally mounted on the coupling plates. means on the head for lifting the pivotal portions of the clamps, means on the coupling plates guided by the guide bar, links connected to the coupling plates, a rocking bar to which the links are connected, a lever in which the rocking bar is rockably mounted, means for pivotally mounting the lever on the face plate, and means for holding the lever at different positions of adjustment.
In a blacking stand, a suitably sup-- ported head. a face plate thereon, a guide bar having slots therein, said guide bar being carried by the face plate, connecting plates having projections extending into the slots of the guide bar, sectional clamps pivotally connected to the connecting plates, the said sectional clamps having their outer ends pivoted with relation to the inner ends, means for guiding the clamps with relation to the face plate, means on the face plate for engaging the pivoted portions of the clamps to elevate the same, and means for operating the clamps.

In a blacking stand, a suitably sup ported head, a face plate thereon, a guide bar having slots therein, said guide bar be ing carried by the face plate, connecting plates having projections extending into the slots of the guide bar, sectional clamps piv otally connected to the connecting plates, the sectional clamps having their outer ends pivoted With relation to the inner ends, means for guiding the clamps with relation to the face plate, means on the face plate for engaging the pivoted portions of the clamps to elevate the same, a l ver pivotally connected to the face plate, links pivotally connected to the connecting plates, a mole ing hat to whi h the links pivoted, said lewr having an aperture for the reception of the rocking bar, teeth on the lever, and a detent for engaging the teeth thereof.
4. In a blacking stand, a suitably supported head, a face plate thereon, a guide bar having slots therein, said guide bar being carried by the face plate, connecting plates having projections extending into the slots of the guide bar, sectional clamps pivotally connected to the connecting plates, the sectional clamps having their outer ends pivoted With relation to the inner ends, means for guiding the clamps with relation to the face plate, means on the face plate for engaging the pivoted portions of the clamps to elevate the same, a lever pivotally connected to the face plate, links pivotally connected to the connecting plates, a rocking bar to which the links are pivoted, said lever having an aperture for the reception of the rocking bar, teeth on the lever. a detent for engaging the teeth thereof, a projection on the guide bar for guiding the detent, and means for holding the detent normally in engagement With the teeth of the lever.
