Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1914.
Application filed August 29, 1910. Serial No. 579,373.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosnPH S. RICE, citizen of the United States, residing at Andalusia, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Bobs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plumb-bobs, and one object is to provide an article of this kind having detachable points so that the points may be readily sharpened or renewed, when desired.
Another object is to provide a plumb-bob heavier at the point than in the body portion thereof.
WVit-h the above and other objects in View, I have invented the plumb-bob illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved plumb-bob, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, taken partially in vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings and in the specification in which 1 is a plumb-bob having a bore 2 through the center thereof, into which a hollow plug 3 snugly fits. The upper part of the plug 3 is hollow, but the plug is provided with a solid point 4, which is in the shape of an invertedcone. From the base of the cone extends an annular flange 5, which seats in a recess 6 in the bottom of the knob. The top part of the plug is screwthreaded as at 7 to receive. a screwthreaded cap 8, having an annular flange 9 thereon, which is adapted to engage the top part 10 of the bob and hold the plug 3 securely in position. The cap'8 is provided with an opening 11 to receive a cord 12, and the lower part of the opening is greatly enlarged as at 13, so that the cord may be more readily threaded. The opening 14 in the plug 3 may be used to store the cord when not in use.
The construction of my improved plumbbob differs from that of other plumb-bobs in that the point is the heaviest part thereof. The object of this construction is to cause the point to settle more easily. Bobs heavy at the top instead of at the point are very hard to settle to become still. Especially is this true if a slight breeze is stirring, whereas my bob becomes still almost immediately.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A plumb bob consisting of a pair of hollow members, one within the other, the outer of said members having its wall thicker at the bottom than at the top, the inner of said members being hollow, and a solid point projecting from said outer mem her, and a cap screw threaded into the upper end of said inner member whereby said members are held together.
2. A plumb bob consisting of a pair of bottom of said outer member having a reouter of said members having its wall thicker at the bottom than at the top, the bottom of said outer member having a recess, a flange on said inner member adapted to seat in said recess, and a cap for said inner member adapted to hold said members together.
3. A plumb bob consisting of a pair of hollow members, one within the other, the outer of said members having its wall thicker at the bottom than at the top, the bottom of said outer member having a recess, a flange on said inner member adapted to seat in said recess, and a cap for said 80 inner member adapted to hold said members together, said cap being larger in diameter than the upper end of said outer member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
