To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK J. OLSHEF- sny and JAMES J. REIDY, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain newand useful Improvement in Whip-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used in conjunction with whips.
Our invention has for its object primarily to provide a holder designed'to be employed in a manner to permit a whip to be held to a vehicle against being accidentally lost, and wherein is provided a casing which is secured to the vehicle so that the butt of the whip may be removably inserted therein. To the casing is hingedly connected a retaining element having a number of projecting teeth which are moved inwardly and outwardly of an opening in the casing so as to engage the butt of the whip for holding it in the casing as well as permitting the whip to be removed therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide spring actuated means serving to force the retaining element in a direction so that the teeth thereof will be normally disposed in the casing; and still another object of the invention is to provide on the retaining element a pedal adapted to permit the retaining element to be operated by the foot of the driver of the vehicle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a whip holder of a simple and eflicient construction, and which is susceptible of being made in any desired size and in either plain or ornamental designs.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly fragmentary, of one form of whip holder embodying our invention as applied to the body of a vehicle. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the view shown in Fig. 1 with the whip removed from the holder, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder shown in Fig. 2. I
The device, or whip holder has a casing and this casing may be of any desired length and diameter. -When in use the casinglO is vertically disposed, and is fastened to. the body of a vehicle, as 11, by any suitable means, for instance by straps, as 12 and 13,
.held to the body of the vehicle by screws, or the like.
When disposed in this manner the mouth in the upper end of the casing is adapted to receive the butt of a whip, as 14, for holding the whip in a vertical position so as to be convenient for use. Through the lower part of the wall of the casing 10 is an opening 15, and projecting laterally from the bottom of the casing may be provided a downwardly inclined flange 16 which serves as a stop.
For the purpose of holding the whip 14 against accidental displacement when inserted in the casing 10, a retaining element,
as 17, is provided. The retaining element 17 has 'a substantially Z-shapedmember, or bar 18 to provide a diagonally disposed upright arm 19, an upper arm 20 extending laterally from the arm 19, and a lower arm 21 projecting laterally from the arm 19 in an opposite direction to the arm 20. The upper arm 20 has a reduced extension 22 disposed on the same relative plane as this arm, and on the free edge of the extension are provided a number of teeth 23. The upper arm 20 is disposed so that part of its extension 22 and the teeth thereof are guided through the opening 15 and into the interior of the casing 10, and extending from the outer end of the lower arm 21 is a foot pedal, as 24. The Z-shaped member 18 of the retaining element has the lower part of its diagonal upright arm 19 hinged, at 25, to the casing 10 so that when the pedal 24 is forced downwardly by the driver of the vehicle the Z-shaped member will be swung to direct the arm 20 for its extension 22 and the teeth 23 to be guided outwardly of the opening 15 of the casing 10. The whip is then disposed so that its butt will pass through the mouth of the casing and into its interior. Serving to force the Z-shaped member, or bar 18 in a reverse direction when the foot pedal 24 is released so that the teeth 23 and part of the extension of the i 10 which is preferablycylindrical in shape,
upper arm of this member will be guided into the casing, to the upper part of the diagonal arm 19 is held one end of a spiral spring 26 having its other end held to the body of the vehicle, and to an opposite part of the diagonal arm of the Z-shaped member is held one end of a second spiral spring 27 having its other end also fastened to the body of the vehicle. The springs 26 and 27 normally serve to hold the Z-shaped memher so that the extension 22 of its arm will be disposed in the interior of the casing for the teeth 23 of the extension to yieldingly engage the butt of the whip, and in turn the whip will be prevented from being accident-ally lost. hen the retaining mem her is similarly operated to free the engagement of the teeth with the butt of the whip by operating the pedal in the manner described the whip may then be readily removed from the holder for use, the stop 16 serving to limit the downward movement of the pedal.
In the foregoing description, we have embodied the preferred form of our inven tion, but we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore we reserve to ourselves the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a whip holder having a socket, and means comprising clips for securing the socket to a vehicle, and a plate secured to the lower end of the socket, said plate having an inclined rearwardly projecting arm; the combination of a substantially Z-shaped integral lever hinged at its lower angle to a lug provided on the socket, adjacent the projecting arm, said projecting arm serving as a stop for the lever, said lever having at the free end of its upper horizontal portion, a plurality of teeth movably disposed in a slot provided transversely of the wall of the socket, whereby the butt of a whip may be engaged and secured in the socket, the lower horizontal arm of the lever being adapted to serve as a foot lever whereby the Whip maybe released, and two spiral springs each having one end secured to each side of the z shaped lever near its upper portion, and connected at the opposite end to the body of the vehicle at opposite sides of the socket; so that the toothed member of the lever is normally in position for removably engaging the whip.
