Tne'sneaure referred to in ehem Letters Patent azur mening er the seme.
To all to whom these presents shall come:
,Be it known that, Mnnnnocrnn HANEOBD, of Lexington, in the county of Middlesex andState of' Massachusetts, have madel an invention of a new and useful Machine for Mixing andl Bleaching Sugars; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, due reference .being had to the'accompanying drawing making ,part Qt' this specification-,and in which- Figurel is a plan;
Figures Zand. 3 are vertical sections; and
Figure 4,11. horizontal section of a machine ernhodying my invention.
This invention relates i First, to'means for thoroughly mixing, at a small expense, soft sugars,7 s'o called,l in order that the mass may present a nniforrnfcolor; andv Secondly, in combining vwith a device for thus treating sugars a means ofbleaclring and Vlightening the color of the same, for reasons well lruown to persons Aaccustomed -to the refining of sugars. l
"The invntion consists, irst, in the employment ot' a series pfjupright rods or"v bars-disposed within an outer drum or casing mounted upon a revolving disk or' platform, and united at top by an annular rim or plate, t-hc rods being arranged concentrieally about a'perpendicular-shaft, which supports them 'and their disks, and producing, by their arrangement, numerous narrow interstices, through which the sugar-gis compelledv to pass' by the centrifugal forcewhich tbe-rotation of said rods, in aggregate,
generates, the sugar' being introdueedinto the top ot' the drum, and lwithin the concentric circle formed by the rods, and lescaping therefrom, as hereinafter stated; and i Secondly, this invention tonsists in combining with the aforesaid .drum and the cluster oi rods revolving therein one or ymorefcentral air-inlet pipes or orifices and a number of outer air-escape pipes, the former permitting entrance of air7 generated biy the revolution of the rods, to the center oi' the annular inclosure formed by such rods, and the latter presenting `the means whereby'such air, after' circlilating throughout the iuterstiees betweenthe rods,
and the sugar at the time:` ,distributed thereabout escapes fromtlredrnrn, in manner to' be hereinafter stated.
rlhe drawing accompanying this speeiation represent, at A, an upright cylindrical drum or struct-A ure, .the bottom whereof terminatcs'in a tunneldrum A, and upon the lower end of the shaft D, Iv
mount a circular' disk, F, while upon 'this disk or platform I erect a cluster ot' ,upright rods or hars a fr u, &e.,'arranged concentrically about the shaft D, the upper ends oftlie rods being united by au annular plate or"1"irn,'G, whose outer periphery is equal, or about equal, to that ot' the disk F..-
The'centrifugal force generated by-the revolution of the` series 'of rods drives the sugar .from the central inclosure within them through the narrow interstices between them, and-into the drum A, from whenceit is precipitated to the barr'el or other object destined to receive it, thc said sugar, inl such journey, being thoroughly distributed and mixed.
H represents an upright open pipe, extending through the cover C ot' the drum A, andas near the center oi the same as circumstances will permit, while I I, 85e., represent a number of pipes, also passing through the cover, but near' its periphery or that of the drum A. p
The pipe H is for entrance ofair to the `inclosure within the concentric cluster of rods, which air is drawn therein by the centrifugal' force generated by their revolution in a body, the air, by this force,
being driven through the iuterstices between the' rods, and expelled from the drum A through thepipes I I, 85e.
The air, in' its journey to and from the drum A, meet-s and permeates ih e mass of sugar, which is dumped into the hopper b, by this means bleaching it to a considerable degree, which it would not otherwise attain excepty by exposure to air' for a long time.
.1n fact, I effect in afew moments, and without the expenditure ofl labor Vnow requisite, what atpresent requires days to accomplish.
, Although the accompanying drawing represent-s but onecluster of rods or mixers, two or more may b e combined, it" found necessary or desirable.'
