To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAM F. Knonsha citizen of the United States, residing 1n Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carline Structures, of which the followi'ng' is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements 1n carline structures of car roofs.
The object of the invention is to provlde a carline structure which is light, yet rela-V tively strongv and rigid, cheap to manufacture, easil assembled, and which provides a strong unction between the carllne and the side plates of the car particularly adapted to resist the strains which occur in the roof structure. f
My,invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the arts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices as herein shown, described, or claimed;
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a partial, transverse, sectional view of a car roof showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail, plan view showing the structure used at the junction of one end of the carline to the slde plates. Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon an enlarged scale taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 isa perspective view of the bracket or supporting member used in my improved construction.
In the drawing 10, 10 denote the side` plates of the car roof which may be of any suitable material; 11, 11 the side boards of the car having secured thereto at the up er end the fascia boards 12, 12. Each slde plate 10 has secured thereto an angle bar 13 by means of bolts 14, the bars 13 extending along the sideof the cars.
Secured to each of the angles 18 at each point where a carline is to be used are malleable, cast brackets or supporting members l5, each comprising a flat plate portion 16, a pair of upwardlyx parallelly arranged flanges or ribs 17, the same being adapted to form a channel in conjunction with the fiat portion 16, and a depending flange or rib 18 on the under side of the plate 16, the rib 18 being disposed at a distance from the outer edge of the plate 16. The flanges or ribs 17 are located intermediate the ends of the plate portion 16 and the latter is preferably tapered on its ends as shown at 19 so that the plate 16 forms a support or brace for each of the fianges 17 to prevent the same from spreading apart. n
Each carline, which in the form shown in the drawing, comprises a commercially rolled channel 20 is adapted to have each end fit in the channel formed by the members 17 and 16 and to be secured to the bracket 15 by means of bolts or other suitable fastening devices 21, each end of the carline being preferably extendedioveimthe side late 1Q and secured thereto by a bolt 22. Each carline or channel 20 is provided with a fillerlor nailing block 23 to which the purlins 24 and the ridge pole 25 are secured for supporting the outside roof boards 26.
In the structure which I have shown, it will be seen that the angle iron 13 formsa rigid structure for securing the bracket 15 to the side plate, since the inner edge of the substantially horizontally extending leg of the angle iron abuts the depending lian e 18 of the bracket and thus prevents t e bracket from twisting relatively to the side plate. Furthermore, the flanges 17 between which the carline is seated prevent the latter from twisting relatively to ,the bracket and hence from twisting relatively .to the side late.
