lMPRovEMENT iN BED-BoTToMs.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be itknown that I, vWILLIAIII B. JUDsoN, or

l Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess, and State oi New York, have invented an Improved Bed-Bottom; and'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawing making part ot' this specification, in which'- ltigure l is a top view of the bed-bottom.-

lhis inyention relates to un improvement on spring bel-bottoms ormattresses, wherein the springs are coniined in place between webbing,'which is composed ot narrow, Aliexible strips, crossed and connected at the crossing by means of rivets'.

The improvements which Iliave made on bed-bottoms of this kind consist in connecting the springs together by means of straps, which are looped and riveted around the wire oi' which the springs are composed, said straps being connected to the webbing byl means ot' rivets, thereby preventing the springs from being twisted or displaced, and also causing them to mutually sustain each other, at the same time preserving the capability oi' foldingthe bottom into a small compass, as will be hereinafter explained.

The following'description of my invention will cn able others skilled in the art to understand it.

In thc accomlmnying drawing- A A represent helical 'springs which represent frnstums of cones connected at their apices.

These springs are arranged in parallel lines within flexible frames E E, which, respectively, constitute the border of the top and bottom sheets of webbing.

Each border is composed of an upper anda lower strip of leather, rubber, cloth, or other suitable material, between which strips the ends of the diagonal strips C and the vertical-connecting strip D, together with the top wires ot' the outside springs, are confined by means ot' rivets c.

'lhc diagonal strips C C, above and below the springs,` cross one another, and are riveted at the crossings so as to form meshes, the whole constituting a light, flexible webbing, to which the springs are all connected, as will be hereinafterexplained.

The springs A are connected together by means of strips S, made of metal or other suitable material, and connected to the spring-wire by looping the strips. S, and using rivets c to retain the looped connections.

. It' the strips S are oi' metal, packing p will be used, which may be of leather, cloth, or rubber, and which is embracedby the loops b between them and the spring-wire; such a-packing will prevent noise.

It will lbe seen, by reference to the drawing,l that the central spring A of the bed-bottom has, at each end, two looped strips, S S, applied to it, and extending diametrically acrossit at right angles to each other; also, that the loops b, formed on each end of each strip, connects another spring to the central spring; thus there are four springs connected to the central spring by the strip S.

Each one of the. springs A, surrounding theI central spring, is connected at each end'to two springs A' by means of the looped strips S.

At every point Where the webbing strips() G cross the centers 0i the springs A these strips are secured by rivets c to the strips S, thus connectingthe springs to the webbinff. 1

The strips D D connect the sheets of webbing together.

`The webbing strips C extend diagonally across from one'I border tol the other, but itis obvious that they may be arranged so as to cross eachother at right angles, forming squares whose sides are parallel to the border strips.

Having described my' invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is he combination of the webbing strips C and connections S', the latter looped 'aroundv the spi'i1I, :,f-wire,- and also rivet-ed tothe webbing 0, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
