CIGAE MAKING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED rBB.2o,1s14.

RAMON SUAREZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Auf. 25, 1914.
Application filed. February 20, 1914. Serial No. 819,914.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RAMON SUAREZ, a subject of the King of Spain, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigaidvlaking Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to cigar making de vices, and more speciiically to a device or tool adapted for use in facilitating the manufacture of hand-made cigars.
The object of my invention is the production of a dev` ice as mentioned which will be of simple construction and through the medium of which the manufacture of hand iliade cigars will be greatly facilitated.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cigar making device embodying` my invention, Fig. 2 is a section taken on substantially line 1f-w of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a section taken on substantially line fy-g/ of Fig. 2, showing the constituent parts of a cigar in the course of making arranged therein, and Fig. d is a section similar to Fig. 3, showing a more advanced stage in the process of cigar making.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a channel member which is open at its upper side and one end. Said channel member consists of sides 1 and 2, bottom 3 and end il, said bottom 3 and end 1l being connected with the side 1 as shown in the several views. The side 2 is connected with the member 1 by means of transversely extending bolts 5 and cooperating nuts (3, the arrangement being such that said parts 1 and 2 may be moved relatively toward and from each other in order to vary the width of the channel. Cooperating with the members 1 and 2 are helical compression springs 7 which serve to normally hold the side members 1 and 2 in spaced or separated relation as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. lilith the construction described, it will be seen that the heads of bolts 5 and nuts 6 serve to limit the outward or separating movement of said side members and by adjusting said nuts upon the bolts 5 the amplitude of free movement of said side members or the maximum width of the channel .may be adjusted.
ln using the device the binder of the cigar which is simply a leaf of tobacco, as is known by those skilled in the art, is first placed across the mouth of the channel resting upon the upper edges of sides 1 and Q. ri. bunch of tobacco leaves which are to constitute the Vfiller of the cigar is then placed centrallyT upon the binder S extending longitudin ally thereof, the filler being indicated at t) in the drawing. Next the tiller 9 together with the binder 8 is pressed into the cl'iaiinel between the sides l and 2 as shown in F 3. The longitudinal edges oil' the binder are then overlapped and the device inverted and pressed downwardly upon the table top or other surface upon 'which the device is arranged, and simultaneously the sides l and 2 of the device are pressed to gether by the fingers or hands. lVlien this is done it will be seen that the cigar filler and binder will be compressed both vertically and laterally, the vertical compression beingeilected by reason of the downward pressure upon the device and the lateral compression being elliected by reason of pressure upon the sides of the device. The constituent parts of the interior of the cigar are thus compressed to the desired degree so that the cigar is completed by simply applying' the wrapper or outer tobacco leaf thereto. This does away with the manual comprension between the palms of the hands or rolling of the partly formed cigar by the hand upon the table top such as is resorted to at the present time in order to obtain the proper compression of the cigar filler. `With the present construction this compression of the iiller of the cigar is readily and quickly effected and the cigar produced is absolutely straight, the latter not always being the case where the hands are used in the compressing operation. Also through the employment of the device or tool set forth the handling of the tobacco which is objected to because of sanitary reasons will be reduced to a minimum The channel of the device is of a depth equal substantially to the width thereof when. the sides 1 and 2 are pressed together, as shown in Fig. l in order to produce a cigar which is substantially square in cross section and the upper or outer edges of the sides l and 2 are rounded in order to insure against injury to the binder 8 in pressing the same into the channel. @ne end of the channel is left open in order to facilitate the removal of the cigar therefrom after compression7 the device being of such a length that 'one end of vthe cigar Will protrude from the open end of the channel as Will be readily7 understood.
lllhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying` my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from lthe spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set nforth7 but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
a Having described .my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A cigar making device .comprising a body having a channel therein opening at one side of said body, said body consisting of tivo side sections adjustably connected t0'- gether so as to permit of relative movement toward and from each other; and helical compression springs for normally holding said sections in spaced relation, substantially as described.
A cigar making device comprising a body having a channel therein opening at one side of said body, said body consisting of txvo sections adapted to be moved toward and away from each other, there being alining perforations in said sections and recesses around said perforations at the adjacent sides of said sections; bolts through said perforation's; and a spring around each bolt `with its ends in two of said recesses, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tivo subscribing Witnesses.
RAMON SUAREZ.
