LUMP-TAPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1914.
Application filed July 24, 1911. serial No. 640,239.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ll, GILMAN B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montclair, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improve-ments in Loop-Tapes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for garments, comprising a tape which is provided at suitable intervals with laterally projecting loops which are adapted to serve for engagement with buttons and the like or for such other purposes as may be desired.
The invention consists in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of certain elements and parts so as to form a loop tape, as hereinafter more specifically set forth.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of loop tape constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same: Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of tape before any step in the method of carrying my invention into effect has been performed; Fig. 1 is a view of a similar portion of tape, showing the smaller or narrower strip formed into a loop thereon and partly secured by a line of stitches; and Fig. 5 is a view showing the line of stitches fartherextended so as to complete the attachment of the narrow strip forming the loop and showing the edges of the tape turned in. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 show successive steps in forming my improved loop tape, and Figs. 1 and 2 show the completed product resulting there from.
In carrying my invention into effect ll provide a strip of tape of any suitable length, designated in the drawings by the reference figure 10. I also provide a comparatively narrow strip 12. The wide strip or tape 10 is shown isolated in Fig. 3. The narrow strip 12 is laid upon the tape as shown in Fig. 4., being run along the same in a line approximately parallel to an edge of the tape 10 for a suitable distance and then formed into a laterally projecting loop 13 as shown in Figs. at and 5, and a line of stitches 1a is produced by a suitable sewing machine or other means so aS to secure the narrow strip 12 to the tape 10 as shown in Fig. 5. The loops 13 may be repeated from time to time at any desired interval. After the structure shown in Fig. 5 is produced, (the edges of the tape 10 being turned in if desired as shown at 16 in Fig. 5) the lower edge of the tape 10 is doubled over and brought into alinement and contact with the upper edge and a line of stitches 15 run through the two edges, producing the structure shown in Fig. 1.
My invention is particularly adapted for use on garments of a speciallythin and delicate nature, in which the fabric is such as to make it difficult or undesirable to attempt to form therein buttonholes of the ordinary type.
In applying my invention to garments of this character it is obvious that a strip of loop tape may be suitably attached at or near an edge of the garment, the loops being so spaced as to coordinate with buttons or like fastening devices on the other edge. ll do not, however, limit my invention to this suggested use, as it is obvious that it may be used for other purposes.
The advantages of my improved loop tape will be. readily understood from what has been above said with regard to its construction and method of producing the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is as follows:
1. A loop tape comprising a strip of material and a comparatively narrow strip of material secured to said first named strip by a line of stitches passing through both of said strips, and projecting laterally from said first named strip so as to form at intervals laterally projecting loops; said narrow strip being doubled upon itself so that it crosses or passes over itself near the point of its attachment to said first named strip.
2. A loop tape comprising a strip of material and'a comparatively narrow strip of material secured to said first named strip by a line of stitches and projecting laterally from. said first named strip so as to form at intervals laterally projecting loops; said first named strip being folded over upon itself and upon said comparatively narrow strip and the edges of said first named strip being secured together and to said comparatively narrow strip near the base of said loops, and said narrow strip being doubled upon itself so that it passes over or crosses itself near the point where the edges of the first named strip are attached together.
A loop tape comprising a strip of material and a second. strip secured to said first named strip by a line of stitches passing through both of said strips, and projecting laterally from said first named strlp so as to form at intervals laterallyprojecting loops; said second named strip being doubled upon itself so that it crosses or passes over itself near the point of its attachment to said first named strip.
4. A loop tape comprising a strip of material and a second strip secured to said first named strip by a line of stitches and project-' ing laterally from said first named strip so as to form at intervals laterally projecting loops; said first named strip being folded over upon itself and upon said second named strip and the edges of said first named strip 15 being secured together and to said second named strip near the base of said loops, and said second named strip being doubled upon itself so that it passes over or crosses itself near the point where the edges of the first 20 named strip are attached together.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 14th day of July 1911, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
