Description
atta eine naar effet REUBEN G. FRNHAM, OF ELBRIDGE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE- p HALF HIS RIGHT T0 RUSSELL B. WHEELER, OE SAME'ILACE.
Letters Patent No. 110,757, dated January 3, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT' IN FRUIT-CANS.
The Schedule referred to in. these Letters Patent and making pari: of the same.
A is the jar, on the outside of which are formed or cast lugs or ears E E', opposite to each other, pierced with eyes C C', to receive -the bow or bail O.
The bow or bail C is formed with a slot, d, to receive the eccentric D. This -eccentric D is extendedto form the lever D', which has its fnlcrnm at the rivet l). The top or cover of the jar B is made of glass o1` other suitable material, having either the form shown in the drawing, .or that ofthe frustrum of a cone, giv
` ing it body, and therefore strength, to resist the press-l ure which it mustnecessarily receive.
A rebate is formed at the bottom of the stopper or cover, to allow a part of it to pass intothc neck ofthe jar, so that the horizontal -surface of the reb'ate will have its bearing on the India-rubber ring a, a, and the vertical surface is inclosed by the neck of the jar.
The bow or bail G is made ot' malleable iron, and has elasticity sufficient, when forced out, to spring back into the eyes c c.
. I am aware that cans have been-used, previous to my invention, provided with a bbw or bail, in combination with a solid stopper, and operated with an eccentric and lever; but the manner of securing the eccentric and lever to the bail was with a rivet, and the bail was not provided with a slot, referred to in lmy application. o
There is no doubt but what my manner of fastening 'the eccentric to the bail is.' far superior to that .where the rivet is used without the slot.
After frequent operation of this device, where the rivet is used, the eye through which the rivet passes will be enlarged, and there will be twice as much wear with one bearing as there would be with two, as shown in my slotted bail. The rivet, too, is liable to be bent, it lhaving to resist the 4strain supported vbut from one su c.
In the arrangement shown in my invent-ion I give to the bail a slot, in which moves the eccentric, snpported by the pin, whichl has a hearing on either side ofthe slot, said slot forminga guide to preventthe eccentric from slipping about in the operation of sealing the can.
Having described tli'e invention, I' now proceed to give its operation.
The jar, being lled with hot fruit, with its cover oli, wc place the India-rubber ring in its proper place, as seen at a a; we then place the top or cover in its place, as seen in the drawing. The bow'or bail Gis then taken in the two hands and sprung cut until it will clear the lugs or ears ofthe jar; it is then allowed to spring into the eyes c c. The eccentric is then brought down by a power being vertically applied to the lever D', and the elasticity of the rubberring closing up the vent seals thejar hermetically.
I claim- A jar-fastening, consisting of the bail C provided with a slot or recess, d, within which -is fastened the eccentric or cam-lever D, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.
